Description: |
CN local executes a runaround as it prepares to service Shawano Paper Mill (div. of Little Rapids Corp.) via former C&NW rails at West Shawano in Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI on 19 Dec. '17. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. at Shawano, WI on 7 Feb. 1894, production of pulp commenced on 22 Oct. of that year. They didn’t start producing paper until 24 Dec. ’02, after installation of No. 1 Paper Machine and a new building to house it. They ceased production of pulp in ‘45 and the name was shortened to Wolf River Paper Co. The name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The facility was leased to Little Rapids Pulp Co. (later Little Rapids Corp.) in Feb. ’50. They purchased the facility on 25 Jun. ’55; it continued to operate as Shawano Paper Mills. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it is still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The locomotive is running on an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. It was labelled as such on some old maps, and the name still appears on some property records. |

The distinctive green, Mansard roof sits atop the company's Second Empire-style office building, erected in 1902 and expanded with an architecturally faithful addition in '41. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. It was labelled as such on some old maps, and the name still appears on some property records. |

The guardrail next to the lead locomotive marks the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The Main St. overpass is visible at left. |

A CN local approaches the former W. 8th St. and S.#Pierce Ave. grade crossings as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 6 May '18. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. The train would have been hidden bfhind the historic Pierce Manufacturing plant that occupied this city block from 1917 until it was razed in 2011. This plot of land has been divided into lots for Habitat for Humanity and some homes have sprung up to partially obscure the view. |

A CN local crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 9 Nov. '18. Train has just set out a string of cars at the yard at Appleton Junction and is now bound for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I recently discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. |

A pair of crewmembers prepare to mount a CN local as it was getting ready to cross Washington St. after servicing U.S. Paper Mills Corp. at Menasha, WI on 27 Dec. '18. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small industrial island for many years. Some ground-hugging steam generated by the facility adds some interest to the scene on this already overcast day (obviously, some viewers may not share my assessment and enthusiasm of the scene). |

Description: |
A CN local parallels River St. and the Fox River Navigation Canal after servicing U.S. Paper Mills Corp. (out-of-frame to the left) at Menasha, WI, on 27 Dec. '18. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small industrial island for many years. This portion of what is now River St. used to be Canal St. The former historically ran parallel near the southern side of this island, along the North Branch (Menasha Branch) of the Fox River. The latter ran parallel along the northern side of this island, along the Fox River Navigation Canal. At some point in the late 1990s or early 2000s, part of River St. was vacated to facilitate expansion of what is now TC Transcontinental, Inc. (part of that expansion can be seen beyond the locomotive). That facility was originally home to the Menasha Printing & Carton Company, formed in 1917 through the merger of two older, neighboring companies, the Menasha Printing Co. and the Menasha Carton Co. Acquired by Marathon Paper (later Marathon Corp.) in '27, it became the Marathon Div. of American Can Co. in '57. James River Corp. acquired American Can in '82. At some point it was acquired by Bemis Co., who sold it to Exopack Holding Corp. (Sun Capital Partners, Inc.) in '10. At some point it became Coveris, until its purchase by TC Transcontinental, Inc. in '18. The remaining portions of the two streets were combined to form the current River St. Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., Menasha, WI, as well as the former joint MILW/SOO swing bridge over the canal, can be seen at right. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. Some ground-hugging steam generated by the facility adds some interest to the scene on this already overcast day (obviously, some viewers may not share my assessment of and enthusiasm for the scene). |

A CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 24 Aug. '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, can be seen in the background. |
