Spring Sports in Ripon |
Description: |
Another soccer game in Ripon gives a chance for some railfanning. The WSOR Horicon to Oshkosh turn is on it's way back to Horicon. In Ripon, the rails are close to Ingalls Field, home of the Ripon College Red Hawks and the Ripon High School Tigers. The train is seen here crossing Highway 23 (Fond du Lac Avenue). |

The 1913 Sanborn map depicts five tracks at this grade crossing, only this one remains. The MILW depot was just out of frame to left. Ripon Area Builders, in the background, is the former site of the 40,000 bu. CM&StP elevator. The MILW owned many elevators along its lines, and then leased them to the Milwaukee Elevator Co., if the information I have read is accurate. |

WSOR local passes a grain elevator and approaches E. Franklin St. as it hauls a baker's dozen of freight cars back to Horicon via former MILW rails at Waupun, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May 15. I believe the elevator is Farmers' Elevator, but I forgot to make note of the sign while I was there. It used to be operated by the Milwaukee Elevator Co. The MILW owned many elevators along its lines, and then leased them to the Milwaukee Elevator Co., if the information I have read is accurate. The depot stood here, between these two sets of tracks at E. Franklin St. Built ca. 1856 when Milwaukee & Horicon Railroad came to town. The depot was moved ca. 1981. Technically it still exists, but it is in deplorable condition: https://www.flickr.com/photos/11741544@N05/8239520147/. The station sign is at the far right of the photograph. |

The C&NW right-of-way is now the Wild Goose State Trail. The trail deviates from the right-of-way for a short distance from here because part of the C&NW rails are still in place to service Peachey Bros. Elevator, partially visible background left. Another part of their facility could be serviced by the MILW, out of frame to left, and that spur is also still in place. I am pretty sure the union depot stood right here, the grassy area foreground center. The station sign is at far right. |

MILW/WSOR Horicon, WI Depot |
Description: |
WSOR local has parked next to the former MILW depot at Horicon, WI after completing a trip to Oshkosh and back on Memorial Day, 25 May ‘15. The current depot dates to ca. 1915. The Wis. Railroad Commission, after hearing complaints from the Horicon Advancement Assn., ordered MILW to construct a new depot. The previous depot, built ca. 1888, was deemed too small, outdated, and unsanitary. I haven't been able to determine if this was new construction or if the existing depot was expanded and updated (comparing historic photographs it seems like the later). |

A train of ballast hoppers being pulled past the Badger Mining Corporation loop track at Utley. Though Utley is still recognized as a geographic location, the city that was once located here no longer exists. This shot was taken from the location of the Utley single room school house which was built in 1844 and closed in 1942. In the late 1800's, Utley had a population of around 500, with the towns main activity being centered around The Wisconsin Granite Company's Quarry No. 69 ( 1909 The Reporter, Volume 42). The town gradually ceased to exist over the next few decades, with the school outlasting the community, serving the children of the rural surrounding area. The quarry mined black granite for use in larger cities, mainly Chicago. Today the quarrying in the immediate vicinity is done by Badger Mining, shipping a tremendous amount of sand, but black granite can also be found piled up. |

WSOR local parked, silent and dark, on the former MILW rails on the north side of Hwy. MM at Rhine Mills in the Town of Rhine, Sheboygan Co., WI on 17 Oct. '15. The small community of Rhine Mills was adjacent to a quarry and lime kiln built by the Sheboygan Valley Land and Lime Co. I don’t know if there was a station here, but there was a spur off to service the quarry and lime kiln. Rhine Mills included a school, saw mill, grain mill, blacksmith, general store, saloon, boarding house, et al. The remnants of the lime kilns still stand and are easily visible from the hwy. about 1200 feet of west of the grade crossing. This site was approximately Milepost 148 on MILW’s Milwaukee to Iron Mountain line. I had encountered this train at Elkhart Lake earlier in the day. I did not stick around there because I thought this train would soon be on its way back toward Plymouth and points south. I waited in Plymouth, hoping to shoot the train as it passed the former C&NW and MILW depots there, for 5 hours but the train never came through. After giving up and heading home, I was surprised, and disappointed, to discover it parked here. Oh well. |

Beaver Dam Switching |
Description: |
After leaving part of the train in the clear, west of N. Center Street, the Cmbria sub job switches the industrial park in Beaver Dam. The railbox car is on a spur leading to some businesses also. There are two spurs leading off the branch main at this park. There are quite a few customers here. The Milwaukee Road used to run into downtown Beaver Dam and do switching along a return loop of track. The traces of the right of way for the loop are still visible, though the rails have been torn up. This park is located closer to the main of the branch and is the new center of manufacturing, as the downtown district is being redeveloped from industry. |

WSOR 3812 |
Description: |
A WSOR train approaches Island Road from the east on its return to Horicon from Oshkosh. The train is about half way between Pickett and Ripon. Though not as refined as their maroon and silver mates, there is something appealing about the scabby blue workhorses sometimes referred to as Mexi-wrecks. |
