Vogtlandbahn DMU

Description:  I unfortunately didn't get the number of this DMU, but I do know that it operates a cross-border service into Germany, as well as a few privatized services within Germany. I took this on a visit to Cheb

CD Class 130 Electrics
Title:  CD Class 130 Electrics
Description:  I took this one in Hradec Kralove, a city in the far east of Bohemia, just on the border with Moravia. These are all Class 130 electrics from the 1970s, built by Skoda, and they're not particularly fast or impressive, although it should be noted that they still are important in Kralovsky Kraj, the region in question, working locals and freights, out of line with the norm of EMUs handling local services. Notice the water spout between the units on the right!!!! Ceskoslovenske Drahy (the old pre-1993 operator) didn't get rid of steam until 1982, and many of their steamers are still in mainline excursion service, so a lot of the steam infrastructure is still in place, up to and including roundhouses and steam shops!!!

CD 150015-6
Title:  CD 150015-6
Description:  I also took this in Hradec Kralove. This is a Skoda Class 150 electric, dating to, at the earliest, 1978, but possibly newer. They were among the last electrics built under the old pre-1989 regime, and it can be said that these locomotives are much more capable than the 130s, being able to operate at 140Km/h (86 m.p.h.) on the level with a 10-car passenger train. This is adequate for most of their assignments, as the Cesky Drahy network is still very, very primitive, although not necessarily any worse (and in many cases better) than in the U.S., and is also fairly flat. Only the Pendolino and the very fastest EC and IC-numbered trains go faster, and then only up to 160Km/h (100 m.p.h.). In the near future, it's expected that the fastest lines will be upgraded to 200Km/h (125 m.p.h.), but that's still a few years away. Partly in preparation for this, since 1996 a number of Class 150s have been upgraded to Class 151s, capable of 160Km/h.

Praha Hlavni Nadrazi (date is a wild guess)
Title:  Praha Hlavni Nadrazi (date is a wild guess)
Description:  This is the legendary, and regrettably notorious, Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, or Prague main station. Built around the same time as New York's Grand Central Terminal and number of other iconic rail stations worldwide, it was renamed Wilsonova Nadrazi after World War I when U.S. President Woodrow Wilson was instrumental in orchestrating Czech independence from the Austrian Empire, then lost this name when the Nazis took over in 1938, not getting it back post-war due to Communism, and still being known as Hlavni Nadrazi today. It was one of the first stations to be built primarily for electric trains, like Grand Central. The date on this photo is a wild guess, but it would have been sometime in late 2005.

CD 452013-6
Title:  CD 452013-6
Description:  Class 451 and 452 EMUs, built by Stud/MEZ and Tatra from 1964-1968 and 1972-1973 respectively, make up a very large proportion of mainline commuter and local services in Bohemia, although it could be said they're long past their heyday. The reasons, in my opinion, are their advanced age, their noisiness, their jerky acceleration (which can cause standees to lose their balance), their inadequate maximum speed of 100Km/h (at least given the line upgrades coming in the near future), the spartanness of their accomodations (even local trains in Europe are generally nicer than on the "Pantographs," as these machines are commonly called), and the fact that they haven't been properly maintained or secured as of late, so vandalism and filth have really taken their toll. Nevertheless, I'm very happy to see that Bohemia still HAS local rail service, as without it, Cesky Drahy would be a far less practical option, and would lose both political support and ridership. This was taken in Mrac, where I had just gotten off a local service from Praha Hlavni Nadrazi (Prague) to Benesov U Prahy. I've had to do a lot of retouching on this photo to correct the colors and (some of) the scanner lines, but some of the "poor resolution" is really fog.

Title:  CD 163086-2 at Nadrazi Smichov

Karlstejn Nadrazi
Title:  Karlstejn Nadrazi
Description:  In my opinion Karlstejn is one of the best stations in the Czech Republic, at least as far as maintenance and amenities are concerned. The fact that Karlstejn is a major tourist draw (because of the castle) is no doubt part of the reason for this.

CD 452013-6
Title:  CD 452013-6
Description:  I took this on October 12th, right after getting off train #Os9608 (I think). It's pulling away in this picture, rather than into the station. You just can't tell because the markers aren't lit, although note that it's running on the right. This EMU, CD#452 013-6, also works the locals to Benesov, and I've ridden on it many, many times.

CD 749251-5 (date is a guess)
Title:  CD 749251-5 (date is a guess)
Description:  I took this picture solely to be a locomotive picture. I'm not convinced that it has any other merits, but railfans on Flickr will probably appreciate it if they're not from the Czech Republic. To the best of my knowledge, these Class 749 diesels don't venture out of the country, as all of the Eurocity and other international services are electric. That means that the only way to see them is to come to the Czech Republic! Class 749s were originally built as 750 and 751 Class diesels in 1964-1976 by Ceskomoravska Kolben-Danek (CKD), and then were rebuilt (again by CKD) into Class 749s in 1992-1996. They put out 1478 horsepower, and can reach a maximum operating speed of 100Km/h, although they rarely achieve this because they are usually used on slow branchline passenger services and freights.

CD Class 371 Pan Shot
Title:  CD Class 371 Pan Shot
Description:  The date on this one is guessed, but it was taken the same day as the first Pendolino shot. I saw this train coming from a ways away, so I had time to set up the camera for this. The shutter was at 1/60, if I'm not mistaken, although I've forgotten the f-stop.

Nadrazi Praha-Uhrineves, Newly Renovated,
Title:  Nadrazi Praha-Uhrineves, Newly Renovated,
Description:  The Praha-Uhrineves rail passenger station is currently undergoing a renovation as part of a larger corridor enhancement programme for the Prague-Ceske Budejovice/Wein route, and it's one of the few stations which hasn't been trashed by vandals yet. One would have to hope that adequate security is provided so that it stays looking like this for as long as possible, so that ticket and tax money isn't wasted.

ZSSK 350004-8 Arriving At Nadrazi Holesovice
Title:  ZSSK 350004-8 Arriving At Nadrazi Holesovice
Description:  This is the 1434 departure that I was going to take to Berlin, on the first leg of my journey to Cardiff. The train's number was EC172, and was a named Eurocity, "Vindobona." Because it originated in the south, it had a Zeleznicna Spolecnost, or Slovak Railways, Class 350 electric locomotive on the point. In reality, though, it's being worked by a Ceske Drahy crew, and of course is using CD rails. :-)

CD 452013-6 At Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  CD 452013-6 At Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  Class 451 and 452 EMUs are a necessary evil of travelling on Ceske Drahy. They're noisy, old, dirty, slow, rough-running, heavily vandalised, and laughably out of date, but they're often the only trains working the line you need to travel, and they rarely break down, actually. Here Ceske Drahy #452 013-6, a 452 Class EMU, waits to work a local service to Benesov U Prahy.

Speeder
Title:  Speeder
Description:  This is a bridge over the Sazava River In Cercany, Bohemia, where the opportunities to shoot great train pictures seem ever-present. In reality, I've never got a good shot of a train here, in spite of frequently being there, the bridge having trains every 15-30 minutes, and it being perfectly legal to walk out on the bridge!! As they say on Monty Python "I got a slug," but actually this isn't a slug at all...even worse, it's a speeder!! :-) At least it's an interesting one with a built-in crane.

CD 010381-2 In The Snow
Title:  CD 010381-2 In The Snow
Description:  Class 810 Class railbuses use the same carbodies as these 010 coaches, and often 010 coaches are pulled by 810 railbuses, provided the trains aren't more than three or four cars long, while some are pulled by small diesel locomotives. They're used on branchlines, mainly, although I've ridden in an 810 at up to 80Km/h on the Decin-Prague mainline before.

Title:  CD 451060-9
Description:  This is #451060-9 after working a service from Prague, waiting at Cercany for the highball to Benesov U Prahy, where it will terminate and switch direction to work a return service to Prague. Notice the Class 810 railbus and the freight to the right. Cercany is a very busy station, in spite of Cercany being a relatively small town. There's plenty of business, too, as the only reason the platform isn't crawling with people is that the train is already loaded.

Stained Glass Windows, Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  Stained Glass Windows, Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, while much-maligned today because of its dilapidation, was nevertheless originally built in a spectacularly monumental style, in keeping with other big city stations of the time. Much of it is still there, too, but above street level and off to the side of the tracks, where there are offices. This part, though, is open to the public, as it houses the landmark Fantova Kavarna coffeehouse.

Fantova Kavarna, Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  Fantova Kavarna, Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  In spite of Fantova Kavarna being open to the public, this shot illustrates how difficult it can be to get the right range. I actually shot this from the pedestrian tunnel that leads to the tracks, as there's a huge hole in the ceiling to remind you of what's upstairs. That's understandable, since the tunnel system under the station used by most passengers is more or less universally considered ugly, whereas Fantova Kavarna, flaking plaster notwithstanding, is a whole other story.

View To The North Out Of Hlavni Nadrazi (date is guessed)
Title:  View To The North Out Of Hlavni Nadrazi (date is guessed)
Description:  It's hard to see in this photo, but we're actually looking down the north throat of Sherwood Forest (Hlavni Nadrazi) Yard. Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, while a major terminus, is nevertheless a run-through design, with trains north to Decin, Dresden, and Berlin going this way, and trains to Benesov, Ceske Budejovice, Plzen, Brno, and Wein going the other way (please correct these directions if I got them wrong, I'm shooting them off by memory :-)).

Title:  View To The North Out Of Hlavni Nadrazi, Picture 2 (date is guessed)
Description:  This is an alternate shot to Picture 1, which is easier to see because it's shot on the outer tracks outside of the train shed, making a good exposure much easier.

CD Class 742 Diesel With Freight (date is guessed)
Title:  CD Class 742 Diesel With Freight (date is guessed)
Description:  Here's one of my few photos of a Czech freight train, this one taken in Cercany. The locomotive, a Class 742 diesel built by CKD sometime in the 1970s or 1980s, is a common sight on freight trains in Central Bohemia, and can also occassionally be seen on local passenger services.

Description:  This is one of a number of snow photos I've taken in Cercany, this one being from the latest batch taken at the beginning of February.

Class 971 and 471s In Praha Masarykovo Nadrazi (date is a guess)
Title:  Class 971 and 471s In Praha Masarykovo Nadrazi (date is a guess)
Description:  During the recent snowstorms (actually back in February), I couldn't resist taking some train photos, so I walked and rode trams around Prague to see what I could get. I took this shot in Masarykovo Nadrazi.

810 Class Railbus Departing On North Throat Of Hlavni Nadrazi (date is a guess)
Title:  810 Class Railbus Departing On North Throat Of Hlavni Nadrazi (date is a guess)
Description:  This was my first ever shoot at the north end of Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, and it was, for the most part a success, even if I had little light and even less film to do it with.

Class 971 Builder Plate On 971 In Praha Masarykovo Nadrazi (date is a guess)
Title:  Class 971 Builder Plate On 971 In Praha Masarykovo Nadrazi (date is a guess)
Description:  While I was in Masarykovo Nadrazi taking my February snow pictures, I finally got around, also to photographing one of the 971 EMU's builder plates. I obviously like builder plates since they're a very reliable (usually) of knowing the straight historical facts about a piece of rolling stock, provided the plate is original, anyway. I especially like plates that are exotic, although it's debatable whether Skoda or CKD would fall into that category.

CD 110032-0 In Snow On North Throat Of Hlavni Nadrazi (date is a guess)
Title:  CD 110032-0 In Snow On North Throat Of Hlavni Nadrazi (date is a guess)
Description:  Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, like most big city stations in the world, has a few switchers waiting at any given time to switch coaches, and Hlavni Nadrazi has the advantage of having an all-electric fleet. Most of these are Class 111s, but this one is a 110, which is a bit rarer. The bluish hue of this photo makes it look like it was bitterly cold, but in reality it wasn't so bad.

CD 451079-8 In Masarykovo Nadrazi (date is a guess)
Title:  CD 451079-8 In Masarykovo Nadrazi (date is a guess)
Description:  In addition to the new Class 471s and 971s, Masarykovo still hosts services operated by the older 451 and 452 classes, although they are gradually dwindling in number. Hlavni Nadrazi is generally the better place to spot "pantographs" if that's really what you're after.

CD 451099-6
Title:  CD 451099-6
Description:  This is one of my favorite pantograph shots. I really like the contrast between the snow and the darkness under the canopy, especially considering that most details in the photo came out fine, esepecially on the train itself.
