Milwaukee Road (CMStP&P) #19331 |
Description: |
Built by the Milwaukee Road's West Milwaukee Shops in February 1940. The following is from museum signage about this car: "Until the development of specialized car in the last half of the 20th century, the standard steel boxcar hauled the majority of railroad freight. Almost any type of crated, boxed or bagged materials could be carried. With additional equipment, boxcars could also handle cargo as varied as grain or autos. Most railroads and private shippers purchased boxcars from commercial builders. However, some roads built substantial numbers of their own cars in company shops. Milwaukee 19331 was one of 750 identical boxcars built by the railroads shops with distinctive ribbed steel sides. The car handled general merchandise throughout the nation. By the time the railroad was sold in 1985, the car had been downgraded to maintenance of way service. Milwaukee 19331 was donated to IRM, and arrived in Union in 1988." |

Pennsylvania Railroad #499320 |
Description: |
Built in 1913 by the Pressed Steel Car Company at their McKees Rocks Plant. The following is from a sign on the car: Boxcar made up the largest portion of most railroads freight car fleets until nearly the end of the Twentieth Century. They were used to carry almost any type of non-perishable solid cargo, ranging from cartons, crates, and bags of merchandise to complete automobiles and loose grain. PRR developed several standardized boxcar designs. Over 7,000 Class X-23 boxcars, with wood sides and ends and steel frames and roofs, were used nationwide. All were retired from revenue service by the 1950s. This car was one of 600 built for subsidiary Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis. It was converted to work service around 1946, and retired in 1965. The car was donated to IRM by the Grand Rapids Electric Railway. It arrived at Union in 2001. |

Soo Line (MStP&SSM) #41146 |
Description: |
Built by Pullman Car & Mfg. Company in 1929. The following is from a plaque on the car: The Fowler 1909 Canadian patented design involved a steel frame, bracing and framing that made freight cars much stronger, increased their life and allowed larger steel cars to be built. Refinements in this car include a steel roof, dreadnaught ends, Youngstown doors, AB air-brakes and Bettendorf trucks as standard features. Most American and Canadian railroads adapted fowler or USRA designs before the adaption of all-steel cars in the 1940s. |

Swift #15802 |
Description: |
Built by General American Transportation Company in 1956. The following is from the sign on the car: Swift Refrigerator Lines operated a fleet of refrigerator cars used to transport Swift Packing Companys meat and meat products throughout the nation. Until the development of reliable mechanical cooling systems, refrigerator (reefer) cars used ice to maintain the interior temperature necessary for safe transport of perishables. Major rail yard had icing platforms where ice would be loaded before or during transit into bunkers at each end of the cars. Entire trains of reefers often traveled at passenger train speeds. SRLX 15802 was equipped with meat rails and hooks, for transport of whole beef or pork carcasses. It was used nationwide until its retirement around 1970. The car was purchased from the Wisconsin Electric Railway Historical Society, and arrived at IRM in 1989. It is currently used for parts storage. |

Description: |
Built by General American Transportation Company in 1954. The following is from museum signage about this car: Swift Refrigerator Lines operated a fleet of refrigerator cars used to transport Swift Packing Company’s meat and meat products throughout the nation. Earlier refrigerator (reefer) cars used ice to maintain the inside temperature necessary for safe transport of perishables. Mechanical reefers such as SRLX 25041 instead carried a small diesel motor to power a refrigeration system, eliminating the need for enroute servicing other than for fuel. Most ice reefers and their associated facilities were retired by the early 1970s. SRLX 25041 was used nationwide meat transport from an Oklahoma packing plant. It was donated by General American Transportation (the successor of SRLX) in 1971, and is currently used for parts storage." |

Thrall #20306 |
Description: |
All-Door Boxcar Demonstrator built by Thrall in 1971. The following is from museum signage about this car: "Boxcars made up the largest portion of most railroads freight car fleets until near the end of the Twentieth Century. They were used to carry almost any type of non-perishable solid cargo, ranging from cartons, crates, and bags of merchandise to complete automobiles and loose grain. Due to its length, lumber is difficult to load through the doors of a standard boxcar except by hand, a few pieces at a time. Thrall developed the All-Door steel boxcar in 1967 specifically for shipment of wood products. Each car side has a pair of 25 wide doors, permitting bundles of lumber and materials such as plywood to be loaded by forklift. TCAX 20306 was retired in 1995. It was refurbished and donated to IRM by the GE Capital Railcar in 1998, and is operational.” |
