Description:  BNSF 2361 sits with 2081 in the drizzle at BNSF's Bayside Yard in Everett WA. What really amazes me is that I took my first shot here in 1975, when BN GP9s were the 'normal' switchers.

Annie Local Headed West
Title:  Annie Local Headed West
Description:  A classic northwest 'sunbreak' bathes BNSF's Anacortes Local as it heads west out of Burlington on an otherwise rainy day. While a trio of four-axle units is not unusual on this run, today's consist of GP40X 3034, GP60B 336 and GP40M 3009 certainly is. The Anacortes Local typically operates six days a week from Mt Vernon/Burlington out to the refinery complex at March's Point, serving industries along the way.

New Tracks by Skykomish Depot
Title:  New Tracks by Skykomish Depot
Description:  The Cascade mountain town of Skykomish has moved its former GN depot (apparantly shortened with the entire freight side missing) across the tracks from its original location to a lot that once held the transfomer station for electric operations. It's on a new base and will soon be associated with a kid's railroad, whose tracks are going down on the south side. The silver culvert to the right will eventually be buried to become the line's 'tunnel'. The BNSF main still runs about 20 yards to the north (left in this shot, which was taken in a steady rain)

No Coal Trains
Title:  No Coal Trains
Description:  Coal trains are a big issue in the Pacific Northwest as environmental and local groups are fighting to reduce or even end shipments of coal by rail. They are citing health effects of coal and diesel exhaust as well as possible derailments. One critic has stated that lines may see between 60 and 100 more coal trains every day (!), which BNSF, not surprisingly, has debunked. In northwest Washington the Everett to Roberts Bank BC line has had numerous civic meetings on the issue and signs like this one are popping up in a lot of towns. One alternative (and highly unlikely) plan that has been mentioned involved re-laying track on the former NP Sumas line further east to avoid towns like Mount Vernon. A plan to build a large, new export terminal near Bellingham WA may go to vote now. We'll have to see what happens.

Mount Vernon Terminal Railway
Title:  Mount Vernon Terminal Railway
Description:  The Mount Vernon Terminal Rwy was formed in 1939 when it took over about 2.5 miles of track from the Pacific Northwest Traction line. It currently operates several hundred yards of track with two industries and car storage for revenue. A roughly 1-mile stretch that ran south through town to a cold storage facility was abandoned in 2005. This shot looks northeast into its 'yard'; the BNSF (BN, GN) main to Vancouver BC runs to the right. Interstate 5 crosses the line immediately behind the photographer; the engine house is in its shadow.

Heading for the Tunnel at Everett
Title:  Heading for the Tunnel at Everett
Description:  BNSF's westbound M-EVTPAS has departed Delta Yard, passed through Sealine Jct and is about to duck into the tunnel under downtown as it makes its way to Pasco. The two GEs up front are helped by another at the rear acting as a DPU. Everett is a fascinating rail town with several good photo spots although development and auto traffic have made chasing trains much more difficult over the last few years.
