WAMX 4181 pauses before shoving back |
Description: |
This train faked me out. I thought they were departing the yard so I started to drive down the Isthmus to set up for a runby, but they stopped and reversed after pulling about 20-25 cars over the Johnson St. crossing. After waiting for the traffic backup to clear, I pulled into the parking lot across Fordem. Fortunately they stopped again to line another switch. Unless you brought a stepladder, you have to hold the camera at arm's length and shoot blind thanks to the stupidly high fence they put up on the west side of the yard. This was the only snap that got the whole locomotive in it. Thank goodness for digital. |

Oil loads, Janesville to Madison on the ex-C&NW? |
Description: |
Not exactly (a four-day late April fool!)...L469 is clearing out 126 tankers that were stored on the line near Brooklyn. Unlike further north (RR west) where train movements are somewhat more regular to serve the Lycon ready-mix plant, the active crossing protection at Perry Parkway was not restored when the line was re-opened. The one signal still standing was removed, and a pair of crossbucks with yield signs added. |

About to duck under County M, westbound out of town |
Description: |
Judging by the color of the rails in front of the train, there haven't been many (if any) runs to Lycon yet this year. The ready-mix plant is in the distance near top right; a segment of this ex-C&NW trackage was re-opened in fall 2014 after 18 years out of service so that WSOR could deliver aggregate loads for Lycon out of their yard in Madison. South (RR east) of the plant, cars are stored up to WSOR's end-of-track at Brooklyn. This L469 job is pulling 126 tanks. |

Approaching Lacy Road |

After some additional ballasting and rehab work following the initial re-opening in late 2014, by 2016 I observed several of the aggregate trains doing 25 MPH on the old C&NW jointed rail. Not this time, however. Was hoping to catch the units working a little harder with the >120 MTs. At least it allowed for some additional shots. |

Crossing Lacy Road |
Description: |
When the line was out of service from 1996-2014, the ungated C&NW-era crossing signals still stood here, gradually falling apart. The signal that was once where the one in this picture stands was knocked over by a vehicle sometime prior to 2006, and never replaced until the line was rehabbed at which time the other signal was removed and both replaced with temporary crossbucks. These modern gated signals were installed a year or two later. The "EXEMPT" signage remains due to the crossing's proximity to the intersection with Syene Road, a 4-way stop. |

Easing through the Olin switch |
Description: |
The track going off to the right was once the C&NW Ridge Runner line, which ran out to Lancaster with several additional spurs extending throughout far southwest Wisconsin. By the mid-'80s all was abandoned except for a stub serving Central Soya in Fitchburg. When they closed that location c. 2004-05, the line was cut back still further. Now only two customers, Vita Plus and Capital Newspapers, are served in the Fish Hatchery Road vicinity. Nothing used the line the train is on from the last UP train to Janesville in October 1996, until the Lycon plant opened in Oregon in September 2014. |

WAMX 4178 with a Wednesday Waterloo Sub run |
Description: |
I actually came out looking for the run to Cottage Grove which I'd observed on Wednesday afternoons earlier in the year. I've come to expect the Waterloo line run on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The only constant is change with WSOR operating patterns. |

Just another station |
Description: |
Dane's main attraction for railfans was the wigwag signals at the other crossing in town, which were replaced a couple of years ago. These cantilever signals at SR 113 also date from (much later, ~1980s) in the CNW era. |

WAMX 4219 poses on the main after arriving at the yard with L863 |
Description: |
This is a unique unit on the WSOR, with its headlight mounted on the short hood instead of between the cab numberboards, hinting at its CP heritage (although the bell has been moved to the traditional underframe location). The frame stenciling denotes this unit as an SD40-2, although it was built as an SD40 and retains the shorter frame and Flexicoil trucks (rather like the ex-C&O former 407X serier, which are designated SD40M-2). It is also the only unit with a red goose logo on the short hood, placed in the middle of the thick gray chevron (presumably due to the headlight). The other units painted to WSOR colors by Watco have a white logo placed in the red area near the top of the hood. The locomotive was painted in this scheme sometimZ in the late fall of 2017, after spending over a year roaming WSOR territory in the Watco "Yellow Bonnet" scheme. There was also a four-axle unit on the system in that scheme, although I don't know the number as I never saw it. |
