CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632 departing westbound at the Aurora, Illinois depot on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler This was one of many CB&Q steam excursions in 1964, this one headed by 4-8-4 5632. The orange car cut in behind the tender is the Chief Illini, the private car of the Illini Railroad Club, the railroad club of the University of Illinois. It was originally a Pullman observation named Inglehome, was bought by Maury Kleiboldt and was for a while a regular fixture on CB&Q steam excursions. Retired in 1968, today it resides at the Illinois Railway Museum.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632 at West Burlington, Iowa on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 5632 was built in this shop, completed in August 1940. It was selected for fan trip service in the 1960's, and was in the process of overhaul on this photo date. The event was a birthday special powered by diesel from Chicago to Galesburg and by 4960 from Galesburg to West Burlington and return. The plan had been to return 5632 to fan trip service, however, fate stepped in. The President of the CB&Q, Harry C. Murphy, retired and control of the CB&Q was in the hands of Louis W. Menk. Menk had no interest in steam or fan trips, the programs were quickly teminated, and 5632 and a few boxcars of parts and machinery were sold to Richard Jensen. Unfortunately, Jensen stored the disassembled 5632 (no flues or staybolts) in a C&WI roundhouse around 47th Street in Chicago, which was soon abandon and slated for demolition. Although 5632 was moved to the south side of Chicago for storage, it derailed in a scrap yard and was cut up on the spot. More information here:

CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-1 6000
Title:  CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-1 6000
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-10-2 Class M-1 6000 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in March 1912, photograph by Baldwin Locomotive Works, print by H. L. Broadbelt, Chuck Zeiler collection. First a note about the following information: it is excerpted from the book, Steam Locomotive Of The Burlington Route, by Bernard G. Corbin and William F. Kerka. Usually reliable, while cleaning the photo I noted the builder's construction number as 37599, March 1912. This conflicts with the numbers in the book, which show number 6000's c/n as 37592, and number 6003's number as 37599. I'm going with the photographic evidence, however, it is possible that Baldwin dressed up 6003 as 6000 for the photo. Five Class M-1 2-10-2's were built by Baldwin for the CB&Q in 1912 (road numbers 6000-6004), at the time the largest non-articulated locomotives ever built. They were intended for the southern Illinois coal fields, exerted a tractive force of 71,500 pounds with a weight-on-drivers of 301,800 pounds. Originally fitted with Barnum under-fed stokers (which forced coal by screw conveyors through four horizontal troughs in the bottom of the firebox), they were eventually refitted with conventional over-feed types. Although the rigid wheelbase was 20 feet 9 inches, they could negotiate a 21 degree curve, as considerable lateral motion was allowed in the first and fifth driving axles. To provide for this, the knuckle pins were fitted into spherical bushings of cast-hardened steel in the side-rod stubs on the second and fourth pair of drivers. An unusual feature of the M-1 locomotives was the use of additional counterweights on the main driving axle. This consisted of two cast-steel bobs placed between the frames and keyed to the axle. The mass of the reciprocating and revolving parts, and the small size (63 inch) of the driving wheels, would have made it impossible to balance the engine properly without these additional counterweights. This particular locomotive (and 6003) was retired in December 1933.

CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-2 6100
Title:  CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-2 6100
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class M-2 6100 , date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 6100 was built by Baldwin in 1914 (c/n 41453) and sold for scrap in December 1951. Based on the scrap date, I referred to the CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet dated December 1, 1950, and determined that number 6100 was assigned to the Beardstown Division on that date.

CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-2-A 6109
Title:  CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-2-A 6109
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-10-2 Class M-2-A 6109 presumed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in June 1914, photograph by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, print by H. L. Broadbelt, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 6109 was built June 1914 (c/n 41489) and retired March 1952. The following is from the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route, by Bernard G. Corbin and!Richard F. Kerka: The successful operation of the first five 2-10-2 types prompted the Burlington to order additional engines of this wheel arrangement from the Baldwin Locomotive Works. Engines No. 6104 - 6125 were delivered in 1914 and were classed as M-2. Number 6110 was exhibited at the Panama Pacific#International Exposition held in San Francisco during that year. The M-2 class incorporated a number of modifications compared with the 2-10-2's built in 1912. For example, a superheater of the Schmidt type was employed, a brick arch (supported on water tubes) was placed in the firebox, and an automatic!Street stoker fired the boiler. A number of other detail changes were incorporated, but basically the M-1 and M-2 engines were closely similar in principal dimensions, weights, and hauling capacity. To reduce the dynamically unbalanced forces on the rails, two of the M-2 locomotives, No. 6108 and 6109, were experimentally fitted with light-weight riciprocating parts made from heat-treated alloy steel. As was done on the Class S-3 Pacifics, the piston rods and crank pins were bored hollow, and to further reduce weight, the Laird-type crossheads were adopted. By reducing the aggregate weight of the reciprocating parts by 379 pounds (or 16 percent) compared to the earlier 2-10-2 types, the additional counterweights that had been keyed to the main axles of the M-1 engines were no longer needed. Engines No. 6108 and 6109 were then classed as M-2-A.

CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-2-A 6158
Title:  CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-2-A 6158
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-10-2 Class M-2-A 6158 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in November 1920, photograph by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 6158 was built in November 1920 (c/n 54121) and retired in March 1954. The class M-2a was an improvement over the class M-2, specifically the use of light-weight running gear. The weight of the reciprocating parts (the rods) produced stress on the track (known as dynamic augment) on each revolution of the wheels, causing damage to the track and roadbed. As the size of the locomotive increased this became increasingly difficult to counter-balance. The Burlington conducted a series of bridge deflection tests around 1914 with four locomotives. The results showed stress at as little as 5 mph with standard rods, and at 40 mph, the stress was 60 percent greater with standard rods than it was with light-weight rods. As a result, the earlier built M-2 class locomotives were fitted with light-weight parts as they came due for class repairs, and the M-2a locomotives were fitted with disc main drivers for faster operation.

CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-3 6300
Title:  CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-3 6300
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-10-2 Class M-3 6300, date location, and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 6300 was built by the Brooks Works of Alco in 1919 (c/n 59818), sold for scrap in July 1953. The CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet dated February 1, 1952 shows 6300 leased to the C&S. The following is from the book, Steam Locomotive Of The Burlington Route, by Bernard G. Corbin and Richard F. Kerka:

The Class M-3, 2-10-2 types were built by the Brooks Works in 1919, and followed the USRA standards for locomotive design. Their general appearance and construction details were similar to the Class O-4 Mikados, except that Southern valve gear was employed. The M-3 engines were assigned to the road as No. 6300-6309. They operated on a boiler pressure of 190 psi, weighed in at 293,000 lb. on the drivers, and exerted a tractive force of 73,000 lb.. Their cylinder dimensions were identical to the Class M-2 and M-2-A engines. The M-3 locomotives saw most of their service on Colorado & Southern tracks, as they were leased to this subsidiary by the parent Burlington. All of the engines were equipped with Worthington feedwater heaters except No. 6303 and 6308, which were fitted with Elesco systems. The USRA Santa Fe types performed notably during their 30 years of service on the road.

CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-3 6306
Title:  CB&Q 2-10-2 Class M-3 6306
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-10-2 Class M-3 6306 at Dunkirk, New York, on an unknown day in 1919, photograph by the Brooks Works of the American Locomotive Company (Alco), Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 6306 was built by Alco in 1919 (c/n 59824) and retired in August 1953. The following is from the book, 'Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route', by Bernard G. Corbin and Richard F. Kerka:

The Class M-3, 2-10-2 types were built by the Brooks Works in 1919, and followed the USRA standards for locomotive design. Their general appearance and construction details were similar to the O-4 Mikados, except that Southern valve gear was employed. The M-3 engines were assigned to the road as No. 6300-6309. They operated on a boiler pressure of 190 psi, weighed in at 293,000 pounds on drivers, and exerted a tractive force of 73,800 pounds. Their cylinder dimensions (30X32) were identical the the class M-2 and M-2a engines. The M-3 locomotives saw most of their service on Colorado and Southern tracks, as they were leased to this subsidiary by the parent Burlington. All of the engines were equipped with Worthington feedwater heaters except No. 6303 and 6308, which were fitted with Elesco systems. A comment prompted the following paragraph:

During World War One the production of locomotives was taken over by the United States Railroad Adminstration amid much controversy by the railroads. The goal was to rationalize production and conserve materials. Although the war lasted from 1914 to 1918, the actual USRA production began in mid-1918, four months before the end of the war. The reason for the U.S. on the tender was that locomotives were built in batches under USRA design specifications, then allocated to railroads based on need. Of the 175 USRA Heavy 2-10-2's built between 1918 and 1920 (end of USRA's reign), ten were allocated to the CB&Q (#6300-6309). Since the builder had no way of knowing which railroad would receive the locomotives built, all 175 received U.S. on the tenders, and upon allocation by the USRA, were finished with road name and number before delivery, as seen in the photograph.

The following is from Hol Wagner: It's my understanding that the NC&StL canceled their order while the locomotives were being built and the USRA looked for another road that would take them. The Q took them since it couldn't get 2-10-2s of its own design (though the USRA did allow it and the FW&D to purchase more Pacifics of Q design, thus the second order for S-3s, 2960-2974, in 1918 and for FW&D F-3A1's 551-555 in 1920). The USRA heavy 2-10-2s were a successful design, but the Burlington didn't like them. Their 63" drivers (3" larger than those of the M-2s) made them slippery on even the mildest grades and they had trouble starting long coal trains on the Beardstown Division where they were based. So as soon as the first batch of 10 M-4s arrived to replace them in 1927, the Q sent them west to the C&S, which badly needed additional heavy power and had no choice but to accept them. The Q logically believed that because the C&S already had five USRA heavy 2-10-2s of its own, the entire group of 15 could more efficiently be grouped together, maintained at the C&S Denver roundhouse and shopped at the four-year-old Joint Shops in Denver. And because the C&S couldn't afford to purchase the 10 M-3s, the Q exacted a daily rental fee from the C&S for their use -- a fee that over the 25+ years it was collected, would have more than paid for the purchase of the lot. So the C&S, which of course had much more of a roller coaster profile than did the Q, ended up with 15 virtually identical locomotives (yes, they were outfitted with two different feedwater heating systems), but of two different classes: E-5B for C&S 905-909 ad M-3 for Q 6300-6309. Like the Q, the C&S preferred the Burlington design 2-10-2s to the USRA design, but had no choice but to put them to the best possible use over its lines.

CB&Q 2-10-4 Class M-4 6312
Title:  CB&Q 2-10-4 Class M-4 6312
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-10-4 Class M-4 6312 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in October 1927, photograph by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 6312 was built in October 1927 (c/n 60252), rebuilt to M-4a in January 1940, retired and sold for scrap in May 1961. The following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 21, 'The Q's Colorado Types', by Hol Wagner:

In the latter part of 1927, the Burlington received from the Baldwin Locomotive Works 12 locomotives of the 2-10-4 wheel arrangement, commonly called the Texas type after the design's origin on the Texas & Pacific in 1925. Numbered 6310-6321 and classed M-4, the Burlington engines (known on the Q as the Colorado types) were the largest and most powerful two-cylinder locomotives built up to that time. They were designed to replace 2-10-2's on southern Illinois coal drags over the Beardstown Division and in doing so to increase tonnage per train, obtain the greatest fuel economy possible and reduce the amount of overtime paid to crews on the slower 2-10-2's.

The boilers of the M-4's were of the radial stay, inverted wagon-top design, 92 inches in diameter at the first stay ring, and 104 inches across at the throat. The barrel contained 87 2½-inch firetubes and 222 3½-inch superheater tubes. The large firebox, carried above the trailing truck, was 150 inches long by 102 inches wide inside the sheets, giving it a grate area of 106.5 square feet. It was equipped with a combustion chamber and arch tubes. Southern Illinois bituminous coal was the locomotives intended fuel, and it was supplied to the firebox by a Duplex stoker. A low steam dome was centrally located on the boiler barrel, and was flanked fore and aft by large sand domes. Engines 6310-6315 were equipped with Elesco feedwater heaters, while engines 6316-6321 had Worthington BL heaters. All 12 locomotives were outfitted with Strombos quadruplex air whistles (actually horns) mounted atop the boiler just ahead of the front sand dome. These air horns were in vogue for a brief period of time during the late Twenties and were applied to a number of Burlington locomotives.
