Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the summer of 2020, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Description:
IC 3129 works in the CN, former SOO yard at Menasha, WI, on 7 Sep. '20. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St.; they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI, in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as an adjacent one. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s (according to tax records, this facility was built in 1966), they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., is partially visible in the background, at the opposite end of the yard.

CN 2282
Description:
A CN container train passes a halted through freight and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 7 Sep. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 2282 pulling as well as CN 8846 pushing. It looks like some new, concrete railroad ties will be installed on the main line soon. I've never seen these around here before. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen near the center of the scene. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye (partially visible to the right). Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, stands in the background to the left. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background.

POTX 4254, et al.
Description:
Several 3-bay covered hoppers sporting POTX new paint scheme were part of the consist of a CN unit train traversing the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 7 Sep. '20. I prefer their old, unique paint scheme. It looks like some new, concrete railroad ties will be installed on the main line soon. I've never seen these around here before. Beyond the north leg of the wye lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The white building to the right is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Some people like downtown Neenah's modern skyline, I do not.

CN 9530
Description:
CN 9530 rests on the former C&NW bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI, on 10 Sep. '20. The local is preparing to depart after servicing Neenah Paper, 135 N. Commercial St., via a remnant of the former C&NW main line. The company was founded at Neenah, WI, as the Patten Paper Co. by Azel Wilder Patten in 1873. Samuel A. Cook and Frank T. Russell purchased the Neenah mill in early ‘85 and incorporated as the Neenah Paper Co., with A. W. Patten as president. The company was later taken over by the Kimberly family. Some references state they acquired a controlling interest in ’93, others state John A. Kimberly, Jr., bought the mill outright in 1900. Neenah Paper Co. officially became a division of Kimberly-Clark Corp. in ‘56, and operated as such until it was spun off in 2004.

CN 9530
Description:
CN 9530 passes the historic, but unfortunately idled, Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., at Menasha, WI, on 10 Sep. '20. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products and living-wage jobs. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert paper mill, it was built along the Fox River Navigation Canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). The company was a partnership of George A. Whiting and Theodore and William Gilbert. It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers. The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company in Mar. '14; the name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. It did not last long under the new owner. The George A. Whiting Airport, at the intersection of Airport Rd. and Appleton Rd. in Menasha, WI, was named in his honor because he donated $5,000 to construct the facility ca. the '20s. Reportedly, it was "Wisconsin’s finest and busiest airport" in the '30s. When the government decreed that there could be only 1 airmail port per county, they chose the airfield at Oshkosh, WI. The George A. Whiting Airport soon faded into history, except for the hanger, currently home to Kitz & Pfeil Ace Hardware. These rails were laid by the WC ca. 1872-4 to form a connection from the C&NW main line to the M&N, which the WC leased effective 30 Nov. '73. According to History of the Wisconsin Central, 1941, this stretch was constructed after the lease, so probably that winter or early in 1874. However, a map of Menasha dated 1872 depicts a similar connecting track, but located farther east and connecting to the C&NW bridge.

'14. These rails were laid by the WC ca. 1872-4 to form a connection from the C&NW main line to the M&N, which the WC leased effective 30 Nov. '73. According to History of the Wisconsin Central, 1941, this stretch was constructed after the lease, so probably that winter or early in 1874. Description:
A CN local parallels Hwy. MM as it prepares to switch the Shawano Paper Mill (div. of Little Rapids Corp.), W7575 Poplar Rd., Shawano, WI, 54166 (physically located in Town of Richmond) via former C&NW rails at West Shawano, Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI, on 19 Sep. '20. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. on 7 Feb. 1894, the name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The facility was leased to Little Rapids Pulp Co. (later Little Rapids Corp.) in Feb. ’50, they purchased the facility on 25 Jun. ’55. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it is still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. It was labelled as such in the '11 county atlas (Upham & Russell Cos. Plat and Riverview Addition), the '20 township map, and the name still appears on some official property records. The paper mill stands along an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it. The fence in the background surrounds the paper mill's water treatment facility, which was built upon the former site of the Shawano Brick Yard (a.k.a. Larson Brick Yard). The brick yard (owned by Charles Larson, and later his son Thomas, for most, if not all, of its existence) produced fine white or cream colored brick from 1891 until 1946. The large facility contained three kilns and its own narrow gauge railway. The paper mill purchased the property at some point after the brick yard closed and eventually demolished the entire facility, to include the Larson mansion. The paper mill's historic office building was constructed in 1901 of brick from that yard.

Seward St., and the Seneca Foods Corp. facility on S. Cleveland St. (on the other side of the clump of trees at right). That clump of trees is growing where the turntable used to be.
