AT&SF H12-44TS 541
Title:  AT&SF H12-44TS 541
Description:  AT&SF H12-44TS 541 at Corwith Yard Shops in Chicago, Illinois on April 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I stuck my head inside the shops and snapped this photo before getting caught. By process of elimination, I determined this MIGHT be 541. Obviously it is being repainted, and looking at repaint dates at https://old.atsfrr.org/resources/CrossetGene/ATSF_all-time%20diesel%20roster/pwr0500.htm number 541 fits the bill (rpnt to BYT2 paint bef 20May65). Number 541 was built by F-M in Beloit, Wisconsin during May 1956 (c/n 12L1021), retired June 1, 1972. It was one of only three such models built, AT&SF road numbers 541-543. Quoting from the book, Fairbanks-Morse Locomotives In Color, by Jim Boyd: "Shuffling passenger consists between Chicago's Dearborn Station and its 21st Street Coach Yard was a problem for the Santa Fe because the trains had to be supplied with steam heat during the moves. To solve the problem, in May 1956 Santa Fe had F-M build three unique boiler-equipped switchers (541-543). These H12-44TS units were essentially H12-44's placed on elongated underframes with the steam generator placed in a short hood behind the cab. Riding on switcher trucks, in spite of appearances, these units were not road switchers." One example, 543, exists today, I believe, at the Illinois Railway Museum, having previously been in the collection of the California State Railroad Museum..

Built in April 1956 (c/n 12L1019) it was retired January 10, 1974, going to Border Steel Mills as number 99. Presumably the SDP40F's are en-route from EMD.

Title:  AT&SF H12-44 558
Description:  AT&SF H12-44 558 at Corwith Yard in Chicago, Illinois on June 6, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in April 1956 (c/n 12L1020) and retired March 13, 1974. This represents the "Phase 2" H12-44 design, with the spartan cab, lacking the roof overhang at the rear of the cab, and also lacking the curved plates from the cab front bottom to the running board.

AT&SF D935
Title:  AT&SF D935
Description:  AT&SF Drovers Caboose D935 at Lakeview, Arkansas on November 5, 1989, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was a fishing cabin located on the White River. It departed for places unknown a few years later. I could find no information about this particular car, however one source indicates that similar cars were built as Dovers cars to transport cowboys riding with stock shipments. Later some cars were converted to baggage/coach configuration and used as branch line waycars ( caboose ) and renumbered into the 2000 number series.

It appears to have a pipe running along the top of the long hood and up the exhaust stack. If anyone knows the purpose of that pipe, please leave a comment. My best guess would be a crankcase breather pipe.

AT&SF RSD5 2134
Title:  AT&SF RSD5 2134
Description:  Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway RSD5 2134 at La Junta, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler+ On the date of this photo, number 2134 was the station switcher at La Junta, and has just moved the power to the waiting eastbound Train Number 24, The Grand Canyon, and is about to be cut off. According to the book, "Moving Mail And Express By Rail", by Edward M. DeRouin, the Santa Fe had the US Mail contract between Chicago and Los Angeles. Working Railway Post Office (RPO) cars were required on certain trains between Chicago, Kansas City, La Junta, Albuquerque, and Los Angeles. However, not all trains were required to have a RPO west of La Junta. In this case, the RPO was removed from westbound Train #23, The Grand Canyon. Upon arrival of eastbound Train #24, the switcher removed the power, set it out, switched the RPO onto the head end, and placed the power back on the train (seen here). The Grand Canyon will continue on to Kansas City, where this procedure will be repeated, and a second RPO will be added for the final leg of the trip to Chicago. The mail contract required 60 linear feet of RPO space between La Junta and Kansas City and 90 feet between Kansas City and Chicago. The Santa Fe kept spare RPO's at La Junta and Kansas City (and likely other locations) in the event one was bad ordered or rejected by the Post Office, and the Post Office would levy fines if the contract was not fulfilled. Postal employees could (and did) reject RPO cars if they deemed them to be in an unacceptable condition. The Post Office always collected the fines because they deducted them from the bill the railroad sent to them for the RPO services.

AT&SF RSD5 2134
Title:  AT&SF RSD5 2134
Description:  AT&SF RSD5 2134 at La Junta, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1953 (c/n 80603) it was retired June 18, 1969 and traded to EMD for credit on a SD45 order. On the date of this photo, number 2134 was the station switcher at La Junta. The Santa Fe had a total of 10 RSD4's and 53 RSD5's. The RSD5 (Alco Specification E1664), at fifty-six feet, five and one quarter inches, was six inches longer than the RSD4 (Alco Spec. E1663). Although I have no hard evidence (yet) one source indicates that the AT&SF RSD5's were equipped with dynamic brakes, and the vents in the short hood, as well as the alternate placement of the numberboard on the short hood suggests it might be true.
