Solo power
Title:  Solo power
Description:  I saw a couple of these that day, coal trains running with just one unit leading, and another on the rear. I'm thinking more power was added at some point farther east.

Grinsteins in the sand hills
Title:  Grinsteins in the sand hills
Description:  A pair of Grinstein SD70's doing what they were acquired to do, pull a coal train through the sand hills along Neb 2. This was a good day to be out on the line. I saw quite a few trains, though pulling a 53 foot trailer really limited my chase options. The up side was that since traffic on the road is so sparse, I could usually stop right on the road to get the shot without causing a problem to other drivers.

Westbound passing the competition
Title:  Westbound passing the competition
Description:  Actually, we've gone so far as to join the enemy. I saw more of our boxes on the trains than on the road. On that line, the truck also makes for a poor railfan chase vehicle-just can't keep up!!

Old power
Title:  Old power
Description:  Older power on the Santa Fe seemed to stay around forever in local and yard service. In the 80s, I saw GP 20s all over the system in that duty. Many had been rebuilt, but even so, it was a model that the few roads who had them had largely retired by then. They did the same with GP 35s and 30s, rebuilding and upgrading them, getting quite a few more years out of each.

Title:  Into the Ozarks
Description:  This eastbound has left West Plains and is now about to tackle the Ozarks between here and Hoxie, where it will get some easy running the rest of the way into Memphis. The two GEs should be up to the task of rolling the 73 freight and 10 stacks over the hump.

Bucolic paradise
Title:  Bucolic paradise
Description:  One of the prettier places is off the shoulder of MO 59 near Granby, where the ex Frisco rolls past this rustic looking barn. The problem is, the highway is four lane divided, and you cant really just perch here and wait, which can sometimes be a while. I got lucky this day to catch a train as I reached this spot. A pair of Frisco SD 45s, or quartet of Fs would have really made the shot, but Im about 40 years too late. Ill take BN green, though on this 81 car eastbound.

Slow down to 40, lose ground, then catch up about the time Id have to slow down for another town. The speed limit was 70 for both trains and on the road, and these guys dont waste any time out here. DPUs
Title:  DPUs
Description:  On the KCS, where I see most of the coal trains I encounter, its unusual to see three units trailing. Here on the BNSF Thayer Sub, the old Frisco to Memphis through the Ozarks, its fairly common to see a 2x3 power set. This is the rear on a 135 car eastbound coal train. These units will get a real workout in another hour or so.
