Interesting power for 206 |
Description: |
Train 206 usually got a pair of GEs, once in a while an EMD, almost always C40s with an occasional SD 60 or 70. Today there must have been a problem, as one of the local service SD40 rebuilds is leading the train off the Chenango River bridge, seen from Water St. |

12T |
Description: |
12T usually got whatever power was handy at Allentown, and you never knew what to expect. One of the more mundane, in the sense of unit models, but unusual sets rolls west with 119 cars. That's a long train for a relatively low horsepower consist-only 5000 HP, when you consider all the trains I've seen over the years with 40 cars and 12000 HP. |

Interesting leader |
Description: |
One of the things about the non priority trains was that they got some of the second tier power, i.e. not a GE wide cab, though there were so many of those just about every train had them, including locals. A case in point is this 12T passing under the Campville-Apalachin bridge with a GP 50 leading. These ex Southern units were one time stars, handling hot trains in the Piedmont. |

H 10 at Devils Elbow |
Description: |
There was a stretch between Owego and Tioga Center where there was a rocky outcropping along the river. The road goes over the top of it, but the tracks run along the base, between the river and rocks. Local H 10 is about to enter that section at MP 239, and will return to the roadside running in about two miles. Were looking at the train just west of the NY 17C overpass as it rolls 33 cars west. |

Undecorated units |
Description: |
Athearn was noted for making most of the models it offered in an undecorated version, so modelers who preferred to paint their own, or wanted to paint a scheme not offered "out of the box" could do so. Who knew the idea would catch on in real life?? NS took delivery of a large number of C40-8Ws in primer, putting them into service immediately, then painting them at Altoona or Chattanooga later. A pair of them are working the NYSEG plant at Dresden on the ex NYC Corning Secondary, getting ready to pull the empties, which will go to Buffalo, then eventually to the Brownsville PA area for reload. |

Panning from the road |
Description: |
NY 17C is within sight of the Southern Tier Line for most of its distance in Tioga County, making for a good chase road. You have to hustle in places to keep up. One such place is between Barton and Waverly, where the tracks cut a much shorter arc to reach the same point. I was trying the beat the train into Waverly, but wanted to grab the shot across the field-this is the place where theres a concrete underpass in the middle of the cornfield, to allow the cows to get under the former LV, now long gone-but not lose any time. I held the camera up and shot, with this as the result. |

Different angle |
Description: |
There were not too many shots at Smithboro on the south side of the tracks, but there was an angle you could get if you took the short underpass just off NY 17C between Smithboro and Barton, if the corn wasnt too high in this field. In early May, it had not yet been planted, leaving the angle open. We see 205 rolling west. |

13T undecorated |
Description: |
NS was taking delivery of new power in the early years nf the 2000 decade. Rather than have the builders paint it, they would take delivery "undecorated" and paint the units as they came through the shops in Altoona and Chattanooga. This resulted in quite a few units running around in primer for several months. Here a pair of them leads 13T at the old DLW station. |

Description: |
H 12, an Elmira based local that works to Sayre, rolls past the home signals at Waverly, taking the Lehigh Secondary toward the ex LV. The GP 50, once the backbone of the high priority fleet on the Southern, has come down a few notches since its glory days of the 1980s. |

UP after dark |
Description: |
13T sometimes got some really interesting power. My luck was that it would turn up A) when I was at work B) in the rain C) after dark. Sometimes two or more of those!! Here we have it with a pair of western units, a UP SD70M and a BNSF GE. I did get lucky on this after dark arrival; at least the inbound crew spotted it under the lights. |

Western visitors |
Description: |
13T approaches the NY 17C overpass on a gloomy afternoon, a pair of UP units leading. Of all the trains to come through here, 13T was most likely to have something unusual, especially if BNSF power was involved. I saw this train show up behind Santa Fe warbonnets, as well as ex BN Grinstein SD 70MACs. |

One of NSs rebuilt GP 38s is working at QD yard. I seem to draw units with all 5s. I have seen 5555 on ATSF and CP, now NS. |

Ruin and rubble |
Description: |
41T is ready to go as it sits next to the rubble from the set out tracks that once adjoined the DLW station. The NRHS equipment was moved at the time the new ballpark was built, and some of the debris still remains a dozen years later. |

Dark units over the river |
Description: |
41T gets its all black consist underway across the Chenango River on a gloomy afternoon. The conditions will improve markedly by the time the train reaches Owego. At this time, it was common to see IC units on this train, mostly SD 40's, but occasionally SD 70's would show. I think I've seen more IC power on the Southern Tier than on the IC itself. |

Making hay while the sun shines |
Description: |
Or in this case, cutting down the corn stalks. The heavy overcast at Binghamton has yielded to bright sun at Miller Beach Rd, as 41T rolls its 62 cars west past a grain wagon that carries the colors of a now vanquished granger road. |

Color in the gloom |
Description: |
The weather in the Tier was quite changeable, and could go from sunny and bright to dismal in an instant. Today was one of those days. After a somewhat sunny shot at Endicott, I now have to contend with the ever present gloom at Endwell. The color is still holding up a little as 40T rolls east along the George F Highway. |

Unusual power |
Description: |
Its typical to see the home road power on its own trains, but on this train, 41T, thats more of an anomaly than common occurrence. 41T is a run through with CN that almost always gets CN power. The southbound edition, 40T, must have gotten into Enola too late to turn the power for 41T, or there was another problem somewhere, resulting in a set of NS power on the train today, seen at QD yard for a crew change. An added surprise is the CR painted straight SD 70. |

Well, they are thoroughbreds, right?? 41Ts head end is pulled up just short of the power on H 01, making for this side by side shot. We also get a good look at some of the older buildings along Chenango St. |
