View of the bridge
Title:  View of the bridge
Description:  The Erie built several great steel bridges, among them, Kinzua Viaduct in PA, Portage Bridge, one of two bridges on two lines over the Genesee, and the only one over that river still in service; Belfast, the other Genesee River crossing, abandoned after Conrail took over the EL, and dismantled by 1984; and this one, 3200 foot long Moodna Viaduct, which sees commuter trains on a daily basis. This is what it looks like through a very dirty RDC front window. Its a long way across there, and a long way down!!

Not your average EL meet.
Title:  Not your average EL meet.
Description:  RDCs were never part of the EL world-the ones here came from PRSL-so to see then meeting a train of the usual EL equipment here at Suffern, is, well, unusual. Otherwise the shot is classic EL, four track main, station house on the left next to the eastbound platform. Just need a PO Ordinary rolling down the inside track toward Croxton behind a mix of GP 7's and RS 3's.

Description:  The Hoboken terminal was a time machine, especially the electric operation. Almost all the the DLW era MUs retained their EL appreance til retirement in 1984, and all of them had been in service since 1930, some longer. It was a treat to watch trains therg. EL ticket window
Title:  EL ticket window
Description:  The Erie Lackawanna ticket window still carried that signage into the 80s. This visit in August 1984 shows that NJ Transit has finally gotten around to removing the prececessor sign. Commuters may not have noticed the change; to the fans it was another piece of a favorite road crumbling away into history.

Big bridge
Title:  Big bridge
Description:  I had always wanted to get a train here ever since I first saw this bridge in 1973. It took me a few years to get here, largely due to youth and lack of resources. By then, the EL power was all gone, but I did get RDCs and U34s there, though by then they were NJ Transit. Still a good spot, even today. Thats NY 59 in the foreground.

Description:  The shuttle from Suffern stops at the once grand Erie station that has fallen on bad times. Not quite ten years after EL left, it is in disrepair, windows missing or covered with plywood and bricks falling out, holes in the roof. New station
Title:  New station
Description:  The new station at Middletown is on the formerly freight only Graham Line, now handling passenger trains since the original Erie main was abandoned through Chester, Goshen and Middletown. This station is out by the Galleria, just to the north of NY 17. It may be cheaper to run, but has none of the elegance of the station it replaced, which is now a library. We see a mid day run from Suffern pausing on its way to Port Jervis with a pair of RDCs, the lead car a former NYC Beeliner. Note the railfan chase vehicle to the left of the train.

RDCs to Suffern
Title:  RDCs to Suffern
Description:  After Conrail abandoned the Erie main through Goshen and Chester, MTA built stations to accomodate trains running on the new rouite, via the Graham Line and Moodna Viaduct. Harriman also got a new station east of Newburgh Jct, as the old one was on the Erie main just west of NJ. Here a pair of RDCs of NYC heritage make their stop with an afternoon shuttle that will connect with a Hoboken train at Suffern.
