Wisconsin Great Northern |
Description: |
A couple of locomotives at the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad excursion train facility. The WGN runs multiple types of excursions ranging from site seeing to dinner trains to overnight bed and breakfast trains. There does not seem to be an official AAR reporting mark assigned to the railroad either. The most official appearing reporting mark is listed on a government document showing the railroad to be WGNS. The document also notes that there are some variations to what the actual railroads us, which would explain the WGN reporting mark used on the 862's cab. The Wisconsin D.O.T. Wisconsin Railroads and Harbors 2017 edition map shows the railroad listed as WGN. The map shows only operating freight railroads, which includes the WGN line. |

A pleasant surprise on a fall Sunday morning was spotting this excursion on the former Milwaukee Road line connecting Cambria and Horicon. The train was pulling 11 freight cars and a caboose. From what I saw on social media on the internet later this day, the excursion was paid for by a private group with a main focus on photo opportunities and and recording the sound for a sound decoder company. |

SOO 1003 leads an eleven car and a caboose freight along former Milwaukeer Road (now WSOR) rails east of Randolph. The train will soon be crossing Beaver Dam Lake, which would have been a great spot to catch the train crossing the lake on a bridge if one had known ahead of time. One would need to know land owners or use a boat to get the shots, but they could have been awesome. |

Milwaukee Road/Soo Line and Chicago & Northwestern Lines Meet |
Description: |
Former Milwauukee Road/Soo Line and C&NW lines crossed at grade via a diamond on this small industrial island in Menasha. The island was created when the navigational canal was dug adjacent the Fox River. The bridge on the left is the former Milwaukee Road/Soo Line (Soo trackage rights) and the one on the right was the CNW main. All are now part of the CN empire. The CNW is an industrial spur and the Milwaukee/Soo track runs to Hilbert Junction. From Hilbert Junction, the trains can go on to Manitowoc or head south to New Holstein. |

Description: |
An interesting four bay covered hopper at Plymouth. Plymouth is now served by the WSOR rather than Canadian National (modern Wisconsin Central, before that Milwaukee Road and Chicago and Northwestern). The WSOR has reinstated rail service to Sheboygan Falls and as far as Kohler, on an old inactive CNW right of way from Plymouth. The reactivated line comes within a few hundred feet of connecting with the Union Pacific (CNW) line that reaches Kohler from Sheboygan. If UP ever decides to embargo Kohler and the Kohler Comany from Sheboygan, it would be easy for WSOR to step in and take over. |
