Fitting end
Title:  Fitting end
Description:  The DPU on this train is almost anticlimactic in terms of the excitement of its paint scheme-after all+ UP has several thousand of these. But with a red, white and blue engine, painted to show support for our troops leading, its only fitting that the flag bring up the rear. As I write this on July 4, I am mindful of the sacrifices all of our service members make to protect our great nation, especially the behind the scenes troops whose actions are not always visible, but whose efforts make*their operations run smoothly. My daugher was on active duty in the Navy for 8 years, doing IT and radio on a guided missile destroyer, down in the bowels of a ship in a carrier$group. Not very conspicuous, but critical to the mission. On July 4, as every day, I am grateful to our active duty, reservists, and vets for their service to America. It is fittjng that KCS has painted 4006 in their honor.

Catch me if you can
Title:  Catch me if you can
Description:  I heard this southbound H train coming through Siloam Springs. Even if I hear a train at the first crossing in town, Country Club Rd, I cant get into town in time to get a shot, and getting across town on US 412 kills the chase most of the time, so I run down Ark 59 to US 62, then west to Westville OK. If he works Watts, I can usually get there before he heads south. Sometimes not. I started toward Watts, only to get about two miles out of town and see the train off to the east. I pulled the first U turn I could and tried for a shot at Westville. I got it, but not the one I wanted. Just as I apprached the Buffington Rd crossing, he was there. I turned on the side road, and was able to get a going away shot of the power.

Title:  Church and a cloud
Description:  I was able to get ahead of the H train with a little hustle, and rolling 75 MPH to pass a slowpoke(why people go 55 on a 65 MPH road, I cant figure), just beating him to Baron for this shot of the church with a tall cloud in the background.

Peek-a-boo
Title:  Peek-a-boo
Description:  The southbound H train peeks around the corner at the north end of Stilwell. Theres a short but steep grade as the train comes out of a tight curve, and they work here. Lucky for me-it gives me enough time to grab a couple of shots and make it down to the station.

Four units past the station
Title:  Four units past the station
Description:  A shot I want to get right is the head on angle coming past the building, but since I dont really have any decent shots of the new ET44s, I opted for this wider angle. The four head end units of the H train roll their 143 cars past the station-look at the rest of the train to the left of the station. Too bad I got dinked. This would have been a good open view in the sun. Win some, lose some.

Dark side
Title:  Dark side
Description:  I had shot the grain train at Gravette as he was topping the grade from Sulphur Springs. I knew it would be a crap shoot, but I went to try the shot at Wolf Creek, just north of Dorsey. I almost made it. The train was approaching the crossing as I pulled up. The dark side view accentuates the sun on the nose of the lead unit. NOTE!!!! This crossing has only crossbucks, no gates or flashers. This is why you ALWAYS stop at such crossings, especially when your sight lines are impaired, such as they are here. If I had not stopped-and I knew there was a train-it would have killed the chase, and maybe me, too. Safety is important. Its what allows you to live to see another day.

Finally!!
Title:  Finally!!
Description:  The ET44AHs have been in service most of the year-since at least February-but I have not been able to catch one leading for a chase. Finally, I was headed up to drop recycling-the transfer station is right next to the tracks, and I often see trains there-when I saw a train on the Lincoln Av crossing. I spun around, getting on US 412, hoping for the bridge shot. Nope-he beat me. But I saw the leaders vaulted radiator, and knew it was a 5000. Off I went. Fortunately, recyclables dont smell!! I caught him as he was going through Watts.

Rolling up the siding
Title:  Rolling up the siding
Description:  I missed getting a shot of this northbound empty TXUX train in Siloam, but was able to catch him in Gentry, as he rolled up short of the Main St crossing. Hell meet a southbound AEPX train here. The late afternoon sun is giving us quite a glint here.
