Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Winter 2018
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
12/21/2017 - 3/19/2018
Album Info:
Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

IC 3138
Description:
CN local halts short of N. Shawano St./Bus. 45 at what remains of the former GB&W yard at New London, WI on 21 Feb. '18. They have completed a runaround and will re-couple to their train in order to start working their way back to Appleton. The pulpwood cars on the team track in the background are owned by Marion Plywood Corp. (est. 1894). When loaded cars arrive the logs are trans-loaded to trucks for the 24-mile trip to Marion, WI. Marion had rail service, courtesy of C&NW, from 1879 to 1982. The reporting mark is based on Great Lakes Veneer, Inc., a subsidiary of Marion Plywood Corp. and co-located at its Marion, WI facility.

Description:
An interesting trio of out-of-town visitors lead a through freight across Towmen Rd. via CN rails as it transitions from former SOO rails (in the foreground) to former C&NW rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 24 Feb. '18. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. Train had three locomotives, NS 8945, NS 1065, NS 2600.

CN 2856
Description:
A CN container train hugs the western shore of Lake Winnebago as it heads north via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 24 Feb. '18. Several ice fishing shanties can be seen out on the lake. I had hoped to capture a similar scene a week or two earlier, when there was much more activity on the ice, due to the sturgeon spearing season (the railroad did not cooperate). Train had two locomotives, CN 2856 pulling and CN 2987 pushing.

Peculiar
Description:
A cut of cars spotted in a very peculiar location, the CN track which once enabled interchange traffic between the former C&NW yard (behind me) and the former SOO yard (in the distance) at Appleton Junction, WI on 24 Feb. '18. I had to photograph this scene just because it is one of those instances of railroad operations which leaves me scratching my head. There are 3-4 loaded TPPX woodchip gondolas at the far end of the cut of cars. Those cars are almost never dropped off at the Appleton yard. The train originates in Neenah, stops in Appleton to drop of some cars, and continues on to work Little Chute and Kaukauna. Once-in-a-great-while they will leave a couple of TPPX cars in the Appleton yard for some strange reason, but leaving them here makes no sense at all (at least not to a casual observer like me).

Description:
A CN local shoves past the driveway as it prepares to service LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.) via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 25 Feb. '18. LSC Communications was spun off from RR Donnelley ca. Nov. '16. I was thrilled to espy WC 16 bringing up the rear of the consist. It was awesome to see a former MILW caboose on former MILW rails, and it isn't very often that I get to watch a caboose in a moving train.

Description:
A CN through freight parallels Harrison St. and passes the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 27 Feb. '18. Consist included approximately 25 loaded CWRX rail cars. If my math is correct, the approximately 1/4-mile long rail segments could be joined together to form a section of continuous welded rail approximately 12-1/2 miles long somewhere. The W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge), erected to eliminate the grade crossing, opened to traffic on 20 Nov. '07.

TBOX 668208
Description:
TBOX 668208 rests in the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 27 Feb. '18. I normally don't give newer freight cars a second glance, but this one piqued my interest because it looks like someone's vandalism has been defaced. My first thought was, maybe some concerned citizen objected to the word 'Ass' and the counterfeit Bart Simpson's exposed buttocks, but that doesn't seem likely. Another vandal defacing a rival vandal's work seems like a more plausible scenario.

CN 9455
Description:
CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it services the large Clearwater Paper Corp. mill, historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 28 Feb. '18. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and was renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. The mill is a longtime rail customer, a map from 1955 shows 6 spurs to service this paper mill, now there are 2, but only this sees regular use.

CN 5626 and CN 2164
Description:
CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 and passes American Colloid Co. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 28 Feb. '18. American Colloid is serviced by CN via former C&NW rails. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties, visible to the left of the locomotives, rest atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Description:
WSOR train idles away on former MILW rails near the intersection of Hwy. 91 and Clairville Rd. at Town of Algoma, Winnebago Co., WI on 3 Mar. '18. The station sign says Oshkosh, but the northeast quadrant of this crossroads remains a small, isolated remnant of the Town of Algoma. It is bordered on west, north, and east by Oshkosh, and bordered on the south by the Town of Nekimi. The Oshkosh boundary is about 1,500 feet northeast of the station sign. Train had three locomotives, WAMX 3894, WAMX 3869 and WAMX 3870. I was surprised to find this train here. I was even more surprised to see it still sitting here the following day. The community of Fitzgerald used to be located at this crossroads.

Martini (president of C.R. Meyer and Sons Co.) ca. Apr. ’09. That group seems to have had a convoluted and confusing history during its brief ownership of the facility; various references refer to it as Martini’s Olsen’s Mill Acquisition Co., or Olsen’s Mill Acquisition Co., or Wisconsin Ag Services, or Ag Services of Wisconsin, et al. Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM) acquired the facility from Olsen’s Mill Acquisition Co./Ag Services of Wis. ca. 31 Aug. ’11. United Cooperative purchased the facility from ADM ca. Nov. ’15. A CN local appears from behind an old, seemingly idle, industrial facility (partially visible at right) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rail at Appleton, WI on 4 Mar. '18. I haven’t found much information about the facility's current or former occupants. Earthkote International, Inc. is one previous occupant and there is a small Miller Electric sign on the southwest wall. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, GTW 6226 and CN 9530.

CN 2598 and PRLX 211 (ex-BNSF, ex-ATSF)
Description:
A CN container train approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Neenah, WI on 8 Mar. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2598 and PRLX 211 (former BNSF, former ATSF). I don’t get to see Warbonnets very often. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 loom in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. I am curious to learn where the two new turnouts (stacked in pieces between the tracks) will be installed. The former SOO main line is in the foreground.

Just as one CN through freight was about to clear N. Lake St., another one rounded the curve to approach the same grade crossing while headed northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 8 Mar. I am nearly certain that most of the motorists idling away at the grade crossing did not share my enthusiasm. The former Lieber Lumber facility is partially visible at right.
