Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

IC 3107
Title:  IC 3107
Description:  A CN local pulls 12 cars west through The Flats via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 12 May '18. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. The bridge crosses the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River through the Flats. South Island St. (which I was standing on) used to run parallel to the north bank of the South Channel. Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and ‘57. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. This remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River. Edward West bought Grand Chute Island and excavated the canal in 1870 to provide water power for the industries which were built soon after. Up until about 2010, everything beyond the train would have been obscured by the paper mill which stood there for over 100 years. The Kerwin Paper Co., a subsidiary of Riverside Paper Corp., closed in ‘05 or ’06. It was demolished in order to erect the hideous, modern apartment buildings, known as the Landing at Eagle Flats and Riverwalk Place, in ‘11-‘12 (both are just out-of-frame to the right). The white, concrete wall beyond the train is a remnant of the paper mill’s foundation. The bridge tender’s tower for the Lawe St. bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal can be seen near the center of the photograph. The recently restored lock tender’s house can be seen background right.

Description:  A colorful trio of foreign visitors lead a through freight parallel to Harrison St. and approaching Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via CN, former SOO, rails at Neenah, WI on 14 May '18. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, is visible to the right. I am curious to learn where the new turnout (stacked in pieces between the tracks) will be installed.

CN 3000 and CN 3030
Title:  CN 3000 and CN 3030
Description:  A CN unit train of autoracks parallels Hwy. 41 and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 17 May '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails run parallel on other side of the train. The facility at left has an indoor spur, but I don't know if it is currently used.

IC 9601
Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local passes the former N. Superior St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 19 May '18. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. This grade crossing was removed ca. the 3rd week of Nov. '13. The large building in the background at left is the former H. C. Prange Co. (a.k.a. Prange's) department store, 126 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI. The drab, utilitarian structure was erected ca. 1961, replacing the historic and beautiful Pettibone-Peabody Co. department store (H. C. Prange purchased the company in ‘46). It is currently home to City Hall and a children's museum. A pair of tall buildings loom above the locomotive. The nearest and shorter one is AT&T Communications & Network Services, 221 W. Washington St., Appleton, WI. The taller one is the former Aid Association of Lutherans (AAL) building, 222 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI, erected in 1952. After AAL’s successor vacated the building, it has become home to multiple tenants, and it has been bestowed with the unimaginative moniker of The 222 Building.

Title:  CN 3007 and CN 2812
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the Main St. overpass as it leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 May '18. The north leg of the wye can be seen near the bottom of the photograph. In the foreground, fill is being added to a portion of the park in preparation for future improvements to the park. The front facade of the remaining portion of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI, is partially visible at left. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while.

CN 2985 and CN 3011
Title:  CN 2985 and CN 3011
Description:  A CN container train parallels Harrison St. and approaches the former Byrd Ave. grade crossing as it heads southwest past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 May '18. A fellow train nut and I were enjoying an evening picnic (tasty vittles from the nearby Tom's Drive In) on the tail gate of his pickup truck, waiting to photograph passing trains. This train approaches, we grab our cameras, start shooting, and start to wonder why the engineer is laying on the horn. As our gaze follows the train as it passes us, we notice the reason for the horn. A moronic, trespassing, fat, old, grotesquely-bulging-spandex-clad, ersatz Lance Armstrong is dragging his bicycle across the tracks at the former Byrd Ave. grade crossing, right in front of the rapidly approaching freight train. When the engineer blew the horn, the moron flipped off the train crew and offered us a smug, arrogant grin while we stared in disbelief as he waddled away.

Description:  A CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 20 May '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sols) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:  A CN local approaches Towmen Rd. as it prepares to transition from the former C&NW rails to the former SOO rails (in the foreground) at Shawano Junction, WI on 22 May '18. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

CN 2812, et al.
Title:  CN 2812, et al.
Description:  A CN container train crosses Winchester Rd./Hwy. II, crosses Ehlers Rd., and approaches the Hwy. 41 overpass as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 5 Mar. '17. Train had two locomotives, CN 2812 and CN 3007. The first highway bridge over the then SOO railroad tracks here was built when Hwy. 41 was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities. The project commenced in the late-1930s and continued into the 1940s. The relocation allowed for expansion to a 4-lane highway (‘superhighway’ or ‘belt line’), as well as bypassing the congestion of the downtowns of Neenah, Menasha, and Appleton. On 18 Apr. ’36, the State Highway Commission of Wis. authorized “construction of an overhead bridge in Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., on the proposed route of U.S. Highway 41.” The overpass project was referred to as the Neenah Belt Line Overhead.

Title:  GTW 5850
Description:  A CN local shoves its train into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 27 May ‘18. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., stands at left. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It is commonly referred to as the Hiram Smith Octagon House; Hiram purchased it from his brother Edward at some point. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993. The powers-that-be wanted to demolish it to make way for the over-priced and over-budget Main St. overpass (out of frame to left). Thankfully there were enough intelligent people around to save it. Some references claim that the historic structure was not moved, but that the overpass design was modified to accommodate it. Other references state that the house was moved, including an article from the local newspaper on 15 Apr. ‘98 which stated, “federal rail safety funds will cover 90% of the additional $200,000 needed to move the historic Octagon House, 336 Main St., about 500 feet east to the corner of Smith and Torrey streets.” If it was moved, it wasn’t moved quite that far. The process of trying to move the house dragged on for at least 3 years. An article in the local newspaper on 18 Oct. ’01 stated that the relocation was still going to happen, but the estimated cost to move it had tripled by that point. Regardless of whether it was moved or remains at its original site, I’m just glad that it was saved.

Description:  A CN through freight approaches S. Perkins St. while headed northeast through past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 3 Jun. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 5744 and GECX 7388 (former CSX). Until recently, the building at right had a sign denoting its use by All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2 (the dark rectangle above the service door shows where the sign was). There is a spur along the south side of the building, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc.
