SWIS S6 244
Title:  SWIS S6 244
Description:  Sidney Warehousing and Industrial Sites Inc. (SWIS) 244 with oil containment issues at Sidney, Nebraska on February 20, 1984, Kodachrome by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in June 1956 (c/n 81726) as SP 1055, renumbered in 1965 to 1222. It was retired in January 1976 and sold to Chrome Crankshaft. In September 1977 it was sold to SWIS and in February 1990 it was sold to Sidney & Lowe Railroad. The following is from the book, Comprehensive Guide To Industrial Locomotives Third Edition: The Sioux Army Depot was established in 1942 to manufacture and store ammunition. It closed in 1967 and was redeveloped by SWIS for private use. This S6 - still painted inwhat might be described as distressed SP gray and scarlet - provided the muscle for the rail service utility.

DTI SD38 251
Title:  DTI SD38 251
Description:  Detroit Toledo & Ironton Railroad SD38's 251 and 253 on the L&N bridge at Cincinnati, Ohio on an unknown date, slide by Phil Ragland, Chuck Zeiler collection. Other than the location and photographer's name, the plastic slide mount was unmarked. Number 251 was built in July 1969 (c/n 34864), later becoming GTW 6251. The DT&I was acquired by the GTW in 1980, and based on the condition of the locomotive, I guestimated the date around the summer of 1975.

DW&P RDC3 D-301
Title:  DW&P RDC3 D-301
Description:  Duluth Winnipeg & Pacific RDC3 D-301 at Duluth, Minnesota on an unknown day in June 1958, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number D-301 was built in 1956 (c/n 6602), becoming CN D-355 in October 1961. I will point out that it has a Railway Post Office (RPO) section, and to the left of the sign between the two baggage doors on the side is a small slot. One could put mail in that door, and it would be processed by the Post Office just like it was dropped in a mailbox. As a teen, I would drop a postcard into that slot (which was also on all RPO cars in the US) addressed to myself. The stamp would be cancelled by someone on the RPO, and that cancellation mark would have the train number recorded.

GB&W RS2 303
Title:  GB&W RS2 303
Description:  ex-GB&W RS2 303 on the C&NW at Proviso, Illinois, October 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1950 as GBW 303 (c/n 77:16), the purchase price was $142,694.00. At some date the air-cooled turbocharger was changed to a water-cooled version, changing the exhaust stack orientation from length-wise to cross-wise, as seen here. One source indicates this locomotive was sold to the Ann Arbor in 1979, and later it was sold to Rail Rebuilders (which may explain the RRB reporting marks), later moved to Lake Superior Railroad Museum. However/ it appears that it now resides at Mineral Range, Inc., WSOR at Horicon, Wisconsin. Sometime during 1988 it was repainted to NYC 8203.

According to an employee, they have about four cars like this one -- and about 12 boxcar weed cars. Although it looks like a motor car, it has no traction engine and is pushed or pulled by a regular railroad engine. CB&Q yards, Lincoln, Nebr. 6-25-63

ARR 1070
Title:  ARR 1070
Description:  Alaska Railroad caboose 1070 at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built by Pacific Car and Foundry Co. in March 1948 and placed in service April 1949. Those COTS stickers sure are annoying. Here's a quote from the book, Show Me Katy, by Michael A. Landis, referring to ARR 1070: Alaska Railroad caboose 1070 was a long way from home as she brings up the rear of a southbound freight on the main line through Mokane. The colorful crummy was one of three Katy leased from Alaska in the early 1980's to alleviate a shortage brought on by an increase in rail traffic. Being that the Alaska Railroad is isolated from the rest of the North American system, the cars had to be delivered via barge to Seattle.

LS&I RSD12 1804
Title:  LS&I RSD12 1804
Description:  Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad RSD12 1804 at Eagle Mills, Michigan on November 8, 1975, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in April 1963 ( c/n 84293 ). the following is from the book, A Centennial Remembrance, by Richard T. Steinbrenner: The 1800 hp DL-702, RSD12 was, in effect, the six traction motor version of the RS11 and was up against EMD's 1750 hp SD9. However similar in details to the RS11, the RSD12 was bigger in every way. Its body length (over couplers ) was 58 ft. 1¾ in., 1 ft. 2 in. longer that the RS11, and was equipped with a 2000 gallon fuel tank. The Lake Superior & Ishpeming received two RSD12's from Alco in February 1957 ( #'s 1801 and 1802 ), and came back for another unit in November 1959 ( # 1803 ), and purchased the last RSD12 built by Alco in April 1963 ( # 1804 ). In 1972 the LS&I acquired six former C&O RSD12's and put four of them in its operational roster This gave the LS&I the distinction of operating the first , its No. 1850 and the last, its No. 1804, RSD12's built by Alco. The other two former C&O units were put on lease and saw years of service on the Utah Railway. Later, the West Tennessee Railroad acquired several of the former LS&I RSD12's.

BUDD SPV-2000
Title:  BUDD SPV-2000
Description:  BUDD SPV-2000 at a railroad trade fair on the site of IC's Central Station (demolished in 1974) on an unknown day in July 1982, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in 1977 at Budd's Troy, Michigan plant, the SPV-2000 demonstrator was powered by two 360 horsepower GM diesel engines coupled to twin disc torque converters driving the inboard axles on the Pioneer III trucks (the original design was for all axles to be driven, but that would qualify the car as a locomotive requiring a full crew). Introduced at Washington D.C. on January 18, 1978, it was planned to show at it at seven cities, but was cut short when both the MBTA and Chicago's RTA requested revenue tests. On the Chicago tests, the car failed to activate signals, which was traced back to the disc brakes. The brakes were not at fault, however, since the wheel treads were not polished by brake shoes, and a single lightweight car with less than optimum clean wheels was insufficient to shunt the low voltage signal current across the rails. Budd later developed a scrubbing device to keep the wheel treads polished. Later, problems developed with the manifolds and starters on the diesels, which were addressed by GM, but tainted the reputation of the SPV-2000. Only 24 units were sold. This particular unit was never sold to a railroad, and was cut up for scrap when Budd's Red Lion plant was demolished around 1999.

WM GP40-2 4370
Title:  WM GP40-2 4370
Description:  Western Maryland GP40-2 4370 at Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 14, 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a Chessie Safety Express trip from Chicago to Grand Rapids and return, or so I believe. I did not keep notes or mark the slides as I was trying to impress a new girlfriend that I was not a foamer. That didn't work, and I'm guessing at the location based on the date stamp on the slide and a photo in Trains Magazine mentioning this trip. If the location is wrong, please leave a Comment and I will correct, thanks.
