AT&SF RSD5 2135
Title:  AT&SF RSD5 2135
Description:  AT&SF RSD5 (Alco spec. E-1664) 2135 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 19, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1953 (c/n 80604) and delivered in the "zebra stripe" paint scheme, it was renumbered to 9135 August 13, 1970, traded to EMD during 1972 on a SD45-2 order. The month this locomotive was built marked the introduction of the GE Model RD-3 water-cooled turbocharger on Alco's 12-cylinder Model 244 prime mover, which replaced GE's RD-1 air-cooled turbo. The spotting feature is the exhaust stack, which was oriented length-wise to the hood in the case of the RD-1, and cross-wise (as seen here) in the case of the RD-3. The RD-3 was replaced in production during September 1954 with Alco's own design, the Model 510 for 12-cylinder engines and Model 710 for 16-cylinder engines. I have not (yet) figured out what that extra pipe is running along the top of the hood and up the side of the exhaust stack, nor why the numberboard on the short hood was relocated.

Thos is the rear view, the AT&SF had their RSD5's set up short hood forward. A total of 204 RSD5's were built by Alco between March 1952 and March 1955. The Santa Fe and Southern Pacific were the largest operaors of the RSD5 with 53 on the AT&SF and 64 on the SP. However, by 1959 the SP traded 21 of their RSD5's back to Alco for RSD12's. The Santa Fe employed its large fleet of RSD's nainly in New Mexico and Colorado in many roles. The appearance of Second Generation power in the 1960's found the AT&SF RSD fleet rapidly retired. I was in Colorado Springs wdth my parents (I'm 16 at the time of the photo) and we we're heading back home on the Denver Zephyr connection. I believe this locomotive was substituting for an ailing'Baldwin VO-1000 2218, which was laid up and off to the right. The AT&SF and the C&S had switching agreements at the time, and the AT&SF was responsible for switching at Colorado Springs.

AT&SF RSD5 2151
Title:  AT&SF RSD5 2151
Description:  AT&SF RSD5 2151 at La Junta, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1953 (c/n 80598) as 2151 (2nd) it was retired and traded to EMD on a SD45 order September 22, 1969. The AT&SF rostered both RSD4's (10 units) and RSD5's (53 units), the mechanical difference being a larger main generator (GE model GT 566 on the RSD5). The external spotting difference is the presence of the intercooler pipes placed above the air tanks on the RSD5. The RSD5 could be set up to have the long hood or the short hood as the forward end, in this case, the short hood is front.

AT&SF VO-1000 2218
Title:  AT&SF VO-1000 2218
Description:  AT&SF VO-1000 2218 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 19, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1943 (c/n 67725) it was retired March 30, 1971 and went to PNC in June of that year. Note that it is stencilled for both the AT&SF and C&S. At the time of this photo, this unit was assigned as the station switcher at the joint AT&SF/C&S depot. Those two roads had a switching agreement with AT&SF providing a Baldwin or two, an RSD4 (#2107), and a GE 44 ton (#464), and the C&S providing EMD products. It appears that the C&S handled the switching in Denver, and the AT&SF handled the switching in Colorado Springs and Pueblo. The C&S locomotives were lettered C&S over AT&SF, and the AT&SF locomotives were lettered AT&SF (or Santa Fe) over C&S.

AT&SF 4-6-0 2438
Title:  AT&SF 4-6-0 2438
Description:  AT&SF 4-6-0 2438 at Claremont, California on an unknown day in December 1976, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a narrow gauge outside frame locomotive, not likely originally AT&SF. The web site steamlocomotive.com places this locomotive in Keizer Station Mall, Salem, OR, and indicated it was originally Ferrocarril Coahuila-Zacatecas No. 6, built by Baldwin in May 1904 (c/n 24252) as a Pacific-type (4-6-2). In 1965 it was sold to Early West Railways, Inc. at La Verne, CA, for a railroad theme park which did not succeed. This locomotive was moved to a railroad theme restaurant (the location pictured here) in Claremont, which did not succeed. In 1981 it was donated to the City of Claremont, CA, who moved it to College Park, until the asbestos scare, when the city put it up for sale. It passed through a couple of owners (one of whom displayed it in Paris, CA) before ending up in Salem, Oregon.

It was renumbered to 3336 in mid-1970, rebuilt during April 1983 to GP35u 2836, gaining a cab roof air conditioner and smoke deflectors over the central air intake grills (later removed). It was briefly renumbered to 3593 for the SPSF merger, then back to 2836 (probably the reason for the fresh yellow paint on the side of the cab). It was transferred to the BNSF in 1995 and renumbered to 2536 in 1999. It is seen here eastbound on the TP&W, which the AT&SF owned for a short period of time.

The second AT&SF H16-44 order was for another ten units (#'s 2810-2819, later 3010-3019) was a Phase 2 design, built between June-July 1952, represented by trailing unit number 3019.

AT&SF SD26 4668
Title:  AT&SF SD26 4668
Description:  AT&SF SD26 4668 at Corwith Yard, Chicago, Illinois, September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1960 as AT&SF SD24 968 (c/n 25878) on EMD Order 5617, it was renumbered to 4568, rebuilt to SD26 4668, retired by the AT&SF December 1986, sold to Springfield Terminal becoming ST 640. The Santa Fe SD24's were rebuilt at San Bernardino between January 1973-78, upgrading the locomotives to the then-current technologies. Included in the upgrade was replacement of the troublesome high voltage and transition circuitry with EMD's Dash 2 circuit cards, replacement of the 16-567D3 with a new 16-645D3 prime mover, which in turn boosted a unit's horsepower rating from 2,400 to 2,625, and installation of a central air intake and filtration system. The air intake modification created a hump on the roof behind the cab, forcing the air reservoir tanks (which had occupied that position) back along the roof. The as-built low short hood and one-piece windshield over the nose was retained, although in later years the one-piece windshield was changed to two-piece to have the same size and shape windshield glass across several classes of Santa Fe locomotives and simplify maintenance part stockpiles. The original SD24 blower bulge was replaced with a second generation blower housing. Some (but not all) received a cab roof air conditioner.
