Thus it was a treat to catch this power set on 557 rolling under the "Welcome to the BC Open" bridge under NY 17C at Endicott. As usual, when I see something good, the weather is dismal. Description:  an 891 train waits on the Buffalo Runner for a new crew to take it west to Buffalo on the Tier. Appropriately, the train sits next to the old D&H station. The second unit is noteworthy: it was one of the EMD 645 test beds back in the 60's, from the program that developed the prime mover that eventually was used in several thousand EMD locomotives over the next 15 years.

Description:  Train 070 was usually a morning/mid day arrival in the Binghamton area, but sometimes it would not show til the afternoon, such as todays train. It is approaching the NY 17C underpass with a mix of power that includes a pair of six motor Alcou, not commonly seen on the Tier. Todays train is a combination of 270 and 558, with 15 stack platforms, 4 COFC and 69 freight.

On the rocks

Description:  One place I didnt shoot a lot of trains, partly because it was hard to beat a train to it after getting the shot at Chemung, and partly because the view was in shadow much of the day, was here at Wellsburg. In the summer, in late afternoon, this shot was possible. Wish I could have shot it in good light in the winter when the rocks were iced over.

Description:  I like to put railroad lineside items in my photos; mileposts are always a good prop. MP 216 is on the Tier where in Johnson Cit}, down off a back street. Almost all the mileposts on the Tier are the ex Erie concrete markers that show JC on them, signifying Jersey City. NS has replaced many in the process of single tracking the line. On the fast track
Title:  On the fast track
Description:  The Southern Tier Line west of Hornell was double track to CP River, roughly where the old NT tower was on EL, where the River Line to Olean split from the Buffalo Sub. Under Conrail, it had a dual personality. Track 1 was fairly well maintained, and good for track speed of 40 MPH. Track 2, on the other hand, was not. It had about 10 miles of 25 MPH running, the rest 10 MPH. It was jokingly referred to as the "D&H Main," since dispatchers faced with a choice of running a D&H train on track 1, or a Conrail train, would send the D&H train down track 2, making for a long trip to Hornell. Train 270 had good luck this day, and got the fast track. Seen here passing the semaphore pole-about 7 cars from the head end, on the left-at Hunt with 11 intermodal and 36 freight.
