A change of scenery
Title:  A change of scenery
Description:  Not the NYSW GEs, though ten years earlier, no one in his right mind would have said the perennially broke Suskie would have modern high horsepower diesels, but the building to the right. The back of the store there is part of a strip mall with a Family Dollar and a P&C Foods(itself now a memory). The building sits on what was once the Allegany Division yard that was across the main from the Hornell station.

Panorama
Title:  Panorama
Description:  A wide view of SLN 5 from the NY 17 access road at exit 60 shows the train passing through downtown Waverly, showing its two prominent trackside landmarks. At left is Ted Clarks Busy Market, which is still open as of August 2015. At right is the large Leprino Foods cheese plant, a Conrail customer. The plant is still open. Im unsure of ownership at this time. Behind the train downtown is the famous backdrop of old buildings.

Rolling past the station
Title:  Rolling past the station
Description:  The Erie station served as a restaurant in several incarnations in the post EL era, and as a result was kept in pretty good shape. MEBU rolls past behind a B 40 on a late Friday afternoon. To the left of the train is the Ward & Van Scoy feed mill.

Ayres Rd
Title:  Ayres Rd
Description:  The other end, not the one youre familiar with. The Tioga Center semaphores were at the east end of Ayres Rd. The west end once crossed the tracks on the bridge seen here, but the bridge was closed in the late 80s when it needed significant repair. The Erie had build a number of these bridges over local roads, but never really did much to maintain them. Once they became deficient, there was a lot of finger pointing with the county or town over whose responsibility it was to fix it. Since no one wanted to spend the money-and Conrail surely wasnt-most of them were closed. It would have made a good place to shoot pictures from had the deck not been removed.

Which way EJ??
Title:  Which way EJ??
Description:  Right here. Endicott Johnson Shoe Co was the reason those two towns existed. By the 1990s, they were but a memory in the area, with only one plant still open, making Frye boots in Endicott. This building at right was a warehouse, though from the equipment in the scene, there must have been some manufacturing. BUME passes, and will not stop here for any cars.

Through the mud
Title:  Through the mud
Description:  This field next to NY 17C at the foot of the overpass changed condition periodically. At one point, there had been an aggregate plant here-see photos in various Morning Sun books on the EL-but by the time I arrived in 1988, there were no structures on the parcel. It did get dug up from time to time. This was one of those times, and we see a 64 car BUME rolling past on its way east.

Title:  Shaky HAN
Description:  HAN 1 rolls west along the Susquehanna on a day gloomy enough to make the power blur as it goes past. The NS unit was a surprise. NYSW had enough power most of the time that they did not need to run NS or CSX power through to Jersey any more, and it had become unusual to see it in Bingamton by this time. It would have a resurgence later in the 90s as stack traffic increased, and the 20 CSX financed B 40s went back to them after the CP purchase of the D&H.

Foggy morning for NY 9
Title:  Foggy morning for NY 9
Description:  NY 9 rolls out of the fog at Campville. I had just come off the hill where I lived then as the train was going west. Too bad its a work day. It would be fun to chase the three B40's and F45 that have the train in hand.

Looks like KL 1
Title:  Looks like KL 1
Description:  Six NYSW units lead what looks like a KL 1, but was called MEBU on the radio. There were probably not enough cars to run the trains separately-the car count was 73 on this train-so they were combined, saving a crew start. We see the train near the Tioga County transfer station, about where the LV Auburn Branch ducked under the EL. Two of the original four B40's are on this train.
