Didnt catch him |
Description: |
After losing the race to the Davidson Rd crossing, I waited for the train, then took off, hoping hed keep his reduced pace-the detector just south of Davidson Rd said 16 MPH-but it was not to be. I got this grab shot of the DPUs as they crossed Country Club Rd. A lot of hustle would be needed to catch him at Westville, and a full bladder made the decision to call off the chase here. Id be back out a little later to get a southbound grain train. |

Standing out |
Description: |
I gave chase of the AEPX train, thinking Id beat him to Davidson Rd, near MP 227, since I was making 65 or so on the road, and hed have a good pull coming up into Siloam, as most of the unit trains do. He made better time than I expected, and I reached the crossing just as the gates went down. Only one thing to do: open the passenger side window, zoom in. Thus we have the bright yellow of the UP leader in low late day sun, accentuated by the dark side of the 125 car train. |

Dinked |
Description: |
After the grain train passed me in Siloam, I took off, running Ark 59 to Summers, then US 62 west to Westville. As I approached Westville, I noticed a large cloudbank to the south and west. What the hell!?!? I dont recall anything about rain in the forecast!! By the time I got down there, I had enough time to work north of town a little ways, meeting the train at the soccer fields near the road to the cemetery. I shot him across the field-in gloom. Dinked again. |

DPUs away |
Description: |
The thing about shuttles is that they keep the power on both ends, just running the trains back and forth. I heard this guy coming north from my house, and went into town to see where he was. In the process of checking out all the possible signals, he got by me at Country Club Rd. A quick turn around, and I got to Davidson Rd in time to miss the head end, but I got the back. A BNSF SD 70M helps the CP power. |

The southbound M train is framed by MP 250 on the left, and the "lift plow" board on the right. I was used to seeing the lift plow boards when I lived in upstate NY-there are A LOT of them on the D&H-but it seems somehow odd here in Oklahoma, where a foot of snow in a year is a lot. Upstate NY?? Oh, yeah, we had over 100" most years. |

About time |
Description: |
When I was following the northbound empty grain train, he called to a train at Dorsey, between Decatur and Gravette. He had an apporach signal at 219, so would likely get an approach medium at 216 in Decatur, indicating he would be getting a signal at South Dorsey to take the siding there for a meet. I went to Mt Olive Rd to set up for the southbound, hopefully getting there before he did, and shooting both trains, then chasing the southbound back home. I need not have feared. The southbound, this TXUX coal train headed for Texas, showed up 45 minutes later. The best laid plans..... |

Coal DPU |
Description: |
I heard a southbound coming into town and beat it for Westville, since thats usually where I can catch up to the train. When I got there, no train, so I started working back north. It turned out to be a southbound TXUX coal train that had stopped at Watts to look for a hot box that had a hit on the detector, and the crew was walking the train. I got the DPU, a mix of KCS, KCSM and BNSF power at the north end of town. It would be a fruitful, but short, chase today, finally in some sun after two weeks of gloom. |

As I crossed the Illinois River bridge, this southbound grain train was just reaching it. I turned at the next intersection and gave chase, catching him here at MP 238, getting this telephoto view as he rolled toward me. Today's chase would expand my horizons a little, as I took it past my usual stopping point of Stilwell, and on 13 more miles to Bunch OK. |

Pushing in the shadows |
Description: |
The day had been one of dodging clouds, the sun in and out. I had hoped to get the panoramic shot from old US 59 of the grain trains DPU north of Westville, but the sun wasnt cooperating. We see the DPU in the shadows, along with some local livestock(descendants of JJ Young's inflatable cows!!) and a flowery meadow. |

Over the creek |
Description: |
The southbound grain trains DPU passes over Baron Fork Creek, which has seen a lot of upheaval recently, as there was over six inches of rain in the past two weeks, shifting the creek bed. |

Primary season |
Description: |
This year is a midterm election year, as well as being an election year for all the two year seats,as well as governor in Oklahoma. Some signs promoting candidates for Oklahoma offices line the right of way at the north end of Stiilwell as our grain train passes. It makes no endorsements for any office, just getting the corn on south. |

Through the sag |
Description: |
The line through Stilwell is a bit of a drag coming into town on a short grade, then a long sag as it goes on south. We see the grain train roll its 93 cars through the dip as it approaches the home signals at the north end of the controlled siding here. |

Splitting the home signals |
Description: |
The southbound grain train splits the signals at the south end of CP South Cave Springs. The crew is taking advantage of that "140" air conditioning-one door, 40 MPH-as the nose door is open. |

Home signal |
Description: |
The southbound train rolls past the northhbound home signal at CP South Cave Springs. I didn't dawdle getting here from Stilwell, getting out of town on OK 100, five miles, then left on Bunch Road-there's a sign, which is really helpful, given that road signs in rural Oklahoma, as in many places, are often lacking-then six miles to get here. I beat the train by about five minutes, so hustle pays. There's a nice morning shot about four miles south of here, from up on a hillside I want to try when the timing and time of day work out. |
