Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Description:
A CN container train parallels Harrison St. and passes Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 4 Jun '18. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. A remnant of the former C&NW main line runs parallel on the far side of the train.

Description:
A CN through freight crosses Medina Junction Rd. (out-of-frame to right) and passes the Rat River Wildlife Area as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 9 Jun. '18. It looks like there was a fire here earlier this spring, otherwise last year’s cattails and marsh grass would partially obscure the train. This scene looks odd without the interesting, old telephone poles that stood along the far side of the tracks for 146 years, until they were removed between 4 and 18 Sep. '17.

CN 9455
Description:
A CN local approaches N. Lawe St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 13 Jun. '18. The north side of the historic Tuttle Press Co. factory, 600 E. Hancock St., Appleton, WI, is partially visible at left. The first part was constructed in 1905, over the years the factory grew until it occupied the entire city block as it does now. A. F. Tuttle, founder and president, invented the first multi-color web printing press for printing tissue paper. The company was purchased by Northern Paper Mills, Green Bay, on 18 Sep. ‘29. Fox Valley Corp., nothing but a holding company, purchased it at some point prior to the mid-‘70s. It continued to operate as Tuttle Press Co. until early ‘83, when the holding company merged it with George S. Carrington Co. of Leominster, Mass., to form Artfaire. Fox Valley Corp. moved this facility’s production to one of their other subsidiaries in Tenn. around ‘90. The facility then became Sulpaco West, Inc., part of Sullivan Paper Co. in Mass. They shuttered this facility on 27 Jun. ’02, when they moved its production to one of their other facilities in Mass. For about a century the facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, paper dolls, gift boxes, crepe paper and especially gift wrapping paper. There haven’t been any business signs on the building for several years, but I’ve seen Appleton Papers/Appvion trailers parked at the loading docks in the past. Some vague internet references suggest that it has also been used by Milltown Paper, Inc. in the not-too-distant past. The guard rail next to the covered hopper stands where the N. Union St. grade crossing used to be. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

The east leg of the wye is partially visible beyond the train. The white building at right is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)). It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Train was returning from Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Several of Neenah's hideous, modern edifices contaminate the skyline in the background at right (I am obviously not a fan of modern, so-called, architecture).

Description:
A pair of juveniles ran across the tracks in front of a CN through freight as it approached the former N. Union St. grade crossing as it headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 15 Jun. '18. The little, vapin’ miscreants found it amusing and taunted the crew. In the background are some bland, new apartments, Union Square Apartments. They were erected in '15 on the site of the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex, between E. Winnebago St., N. Union St., E. Commercial St., and behind a row of houses on N. Drew St. Eagle Manufacturing Co., makers of gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements, was incorporated in ‘The Flats’ at Appleton, WI in Dec. 1888. When they outgrew that facility, they began construction of their factory here in ‘04. Over the years it grew until it occupied most of the block. Before its expansion, it shared the block with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Co. to the east. Further east of that was C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers, fronting N. Union St. between E. Winnebago St. and E. Commercial St. All 3 facilities were served by C&NW. There was a diamond in the middle of the east end of E. Winnebago St., just west of N. Union St., near the small clump of trees on the right, for at least two spurs leading into that block. Train had three locomotives, CN 3072, CN 3108, GTW 5850.

Description:
A CN local crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 16 Jun. '18. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks and had one locomotive, IC 3102. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. You can't tell from this angle, but the train also crosses the Newberry Trail as it approaches the southeast end of the bridge. The turnout at lower right is used to service Neenah Paper (formerly Fox River Paper Co.). Neenah Paper is the only current rail customer in 'The Flats' and has been for a number of years. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

A CN local crosses S. Lawe St. and parallels the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River via former C&NW rails in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 16 Jun. '18. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks and had one locomotive, IC 3102. South Island St. used to run parallel to the north bank of the South Channel. Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. This remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River. Edward West bought Grand Chute Island and excavated the canal in 1870 to provide water power for the industries which were built soon after. Neenah Paper (formerly Fox River Paper Co.), is partially visible in the background to the left. Neenah Paper is the only current rail customer in 'The Flats' and has been for a number of years. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. I don't recall historic occupants of the facility partially visible at left. It appears to have at least two addresses, 140 Kaukauna St. and 56 Lush St.; a recent occupant was Pierce Plastering.

IC 9601 and CN 4721
Description:
A CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Jun. '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:
A CN through freight crosses E. 14th Ave. and passes the remnants of the former C&NW yard as it heads northeast at Oshkosh, WI on 18 Jun. '18. Train had six locomotives, CN 8940, CN 2446, CN 2335, CN 5798, CSX 7811, GECX 9xxx. A cut of cars rests by the depot/yard office. I was thrilled to find these cars here, because I thought it meant the local had made a daylight run (the Oshkosh local seems to usually be a nocturnal run). I waited for quite a while, but didn't see or hear any other signs of the local's presence. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. Most of the yard was torn up in Aug. '16; they did leave the passing siding and team track.

A CN through freight passes the remnants of the former C&NW yard as it heads southwest at Oshkosh, WI on 18 Jun. '18. Train had three locomotives, CN 3800, CREX 1511, CN 2848. Description:
A CN container train crosses over from the former SOO main line to a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, and approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest at Neenah, WI on 19 Jun. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 3805 and GECX 2039 (or maybe CREX 2039). Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible background right. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. In the background at left, you can see the tail end of a through freight halted on the main line. The W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) can be seen in the background.

Description:
A CN container train crosses Kampo Rd. and approaches the W. Bell St. overpass as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, at Neenah, WI on 19 Jun. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 3805 and GECX 2039. To the right of the lead locomotive are the remnants of a spur for the two warehouses to the right, but the turnout that connected them to the siding has been gone for years. A new turnout rests between the two sets of tracks by Kampo Rd. It will soon replace an existing turnout which is used to service Neenah's Southpark Industrial Center from the former C&NW passing siding. The former SOO main line is at left. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 can be seen in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

Description:
A CN through freight crosses over from the former SOO rails to a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, and approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest at Neenah, WI on 20 Jun. '18. Train had three locomotives, CSX 22, BNSF 8290, CN 5286. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 can be seen at right. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

Bell St. overpass as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, at Neenah, WI on 20 Jun. '18. Train had three locomotives, CSX 22, BNSF 8290, CN 5286. The former SOO main line is in the foreground. A new turnout rests between the two sets of tracks. It will soon replace an existing turnout which is used to service Neenah's Southpark Industrial Center from the former C&NW passing siding.
