This was not the first application of an extended cab to accommodated the crew. The left ( Fireman ) side of some production GP30's was also extended ten inches at the request of the UP. This was done to provide additional room for a third man in the cab. The GP50 cab extension was to accommodate five crew men in the cab, which was extended on both sides 23 inches, in anticipation of cabooseless trains. |

The tank car splicing the pairs of locomotives was known as a fuel tender. As I understand the concept, the idea was to save money by purchasing the fuel at the cheapest location, and avoiding more expensive re-fueling at outlying locations. The fuel tender was connected to the modified locomotives, saving money by avoiding re-fueling enroute. I'm not certain how this experiment played out in the long run. |

These two units turned out to be among the last five C415's built. The SP&S had four additional C415's on order, but those were cancelled when Alco exited the locomotive building business in early 1969. The two SP&S C415's moved on to work at Ohio River Terminals in Huntingon, WV. This is the rear view. |

Dixon offers the following: That white stuff all over the walkways and the top is Mount Saint Helen's ash, which blew on May 18, 1980, and Vancouver Washington, and Portland, Oregon, got hit with some serious ashfall. |

Built in January 1952 as Spokane Portland & Seattle 71 (c/n 79594), it became BN 4056 and was retired in April 1980. This locomotive shows evidence of a water-cooled turbocharger. Beginning in 1953, the trouble prone GE RD-1 air-cooled turbocharger (which GE developed during WWII for P38 aircraft) was replaced by a water-cooled GE RD-3 turbocharger, and in 1954 by Alco's own design, the Model 510. The water-cooled turbocharger was mounted with the cylindrical casing facing the free end of the prime mover. The RD-1 was mounted oriented lengthwise. The external difference was in the exhaust stack. The air cooled turbo stack was oriented lengthwise to the hood, the water-cooled turbo stack was mounted crosswise to the hood, as seen here. Many RS3's were retrofitted with the water cooled turbocharger during their operational lives. The white powder on the roof and running boards is ash from the Mount Saint Helen's eruption. This locomotive was retired in Washington and happened to be in the neighborhood during the eruption, then was shipped east dead for final disposition. |

The exhaust stack is covered, so I'm, guessing it's going back to GE for warranty repair. |

An unfortunate location for the hand brake (likely because the demonstrators were set up to run long hood forward), it did not play well with most railroad's paint schemes. The RS11 (Alco's internal model specification was DL-701) introduced the new Model 251 prime mover and replaced the RS3 in Alco's 1956 catalog. It was intended to directly compete with EMD's GP9, but did not fare well, with a total production of 356 units, plus 75 produced in Canada by MLW, versus EMD's GP9 production of 3,444 units. |
