GE advertisement handed out on BN C30-7 5136 at Galesburg, Illinois, June 4, 1981, Chuck Zeiler collection. This is a scan of both sides of a card (actual size = 8.5" X 5.5") that was handed out at BN's Galesburg Railroad Days, June 4-7, 1981. Although the card is depicts a generic C30-7, number 5136 was on display at the event. Apparently 5136 didn't fare too well, records indicate it was built in May 1981 and retired in November 1984. |

BN C30-7 5136 |
Description: |
Burlington Northern Railroad C30-7 5136 on display at the Galesburg Railroad Days on June 6, 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in May 1981 (c/n 43171) and retired in November 1984. That seemed odd, so I looked up railroad accident reports at http://specialcollection.dotlibrary.dot.gov/ and came across the following ICC report (edited): About 1:00 a.m., on Thursday, June 14, 1984, Burlington Northern Railroad Company freight trains Extra 6760 West and Extra 7907 East collided head-on on the single track main line near Motley, Minnesota. The trains were being operated on dispatcher-issued train orders, in nonsignallized territory. The westbound train had been traveling about 35 to 40 mph and the eastbound train about 45 to 49 mph just before the emergency applications of the automatic air brakes of both trains. The accident resulted in three fatalities, one serious injury, and three minor injuries; damages were estimated at $3,931,146. The dispatcher controlling the movement of the trains had been promoted to dispatcher recently before the accident and was working in his second tour of duty in that position. The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the probable cause of this accident was the Burlington Northern Railroad's inadequate personnel selection criteria which resulted in the placement of an individual without sufficient training and supervision into the safety critical position of train dispatcher. When train Extra 6760 West passed through Brainerd, the engineer slowed the train for a 10-mph speed restriction through that vicinity. After having passed Brainerd, the engineer accelerated the train to about 49 mph. (The maximum speed at this location for an empty coal train is 49 mph). As the locomotive of train Extra 6760 West proceeded through a 1 degree curve to the right and neared tangent track, the head brakeman noticed light reflecting on the rails ahead of his train. He further stated that he then "... could see another engine that we didn't have (train) orders on, and I didn't know if that engine was in a siding for awhile. It took me awhile to remember the track and realize that there was no siding in that area." The head brakeman stated that he and the engineer applied the emergency brakes at the same time and that he then stepped out onto the front platform of his locomotive unit. He further stated "...I could see it (the oncoming locomotive) was moving, I was reading engine numbers and I decided I better get off, and I jumped." The three locomotive units in each of the trains were destroyed. The operating compartments of the lead locomotive unit of each train were crushed, and the units were sheared off at platform level. Of the 19 cars derailed in train Extra 7907 East, 10 were destroyed, 7 were moderately damaged, and 2 were lightly damaged. Of the 16 cars derailed in train Extra 6760 West, 8 were destroyed, 5 were moderately damaged, and 3 were lightly damaged. About 1,087 feet of main track was destroyed or damaged in the accident. The locomotive of train Extra 6760 West consisted of three diesel-electric units; BN 6760, BN 6765, and BN 7241. The three units were all model SD-40-2. The locomotive of train Extra 7907 East consisted of three diesel-electric units; BN 7907, BN 5136, and BN 7899. The first and third units were model SD-40-2, 3,000-horsepower, 6-axle units manufactured by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors Corporation. The second unit was a model C 30-7, 3,000-horsepower, 6-axle unit manufactured by the General Electric Company. |

It was the first of nine U23C's ordered by the CB&Q (road #'s 460-468), the last new locomotives acquired by the Q before the BN merger, and the only CB&Q GE locomotives not delivered in Chinese Red paint. The U23C's were delivered in the per-merger green with three white chevrons on the nose. |

These are the controls for a locomotive that was built for the CB&Q as #466 in April 1969 (c/n 36994), one of a nine unit order of U23Cs, the only ones on both the CB&Q and the BN rosters. This photo was shot in the dead line at Cicero. This locomotive was officially retired in June 1984. You might ask how I could be sure this was #5206, and my proof is the road number chalked on this control panel, if you look closely. And I did not even see the smiley face on the upper middle gauge until I posted this photo. |

BN U23C 5207 |
Description: |
Burlingon Northern Railroad U23C 5207 at Alliance, Nebraska on December 15, 1982, Kodachrome by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collection. Nine U23C's were built for the CB&Q, the last new locomotives acquired by the Q before the BN merger. This one was built in April 1969 (c/n 36995) as CB&Q 467, became BN 5207 sometime after March 2, 1970, and was retired in June 1984. These nine U23C's (CB&Q #'s 460-468, BN #'s 5200-5208) were the only CB&Q GE-built diesels to wear the pre-merger green paint scheme. Externally, the only spotting feature to differentiate the U23C from the U30C is the number of tall engine room doors: six tall doors per side on the U23C, and eight tall doors for the U30C, or one tall door per cylinder. |

BN U30C 5301 |
Description: |
BN U30C 5301 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in April 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in May 1975 (c/n 40391). retired in September 1990. This is the second U30C numbered 5301, and quoting from the book, "BN Annual 1975-1976", here is the story; "The only new power delivered in 1975 was 30 U30C's units 5300-5305 (2nd) , 5353-5364 (2nd), Locotrol masters 5834-5839, and Locotrol remores 5939-5944. A total of 26 of the new U30C's went into dead storage (upon delivery) before a turnaround in business came in late July. Wonder how to tell the first and second seri{s of 5300's apart? Here are some noticeable differences: Anti-climber pilot on the new units (2nd 5300's) , round-top headlight on new units, flat top on old units, no Locotrol antenna on new units, new-style door latches on new units (photos used in the book show a round opening for the older style and a square opening for the new style), no sight glasses on new units." For the record, the first 5300's were six U30C's 5300-5305 built in January-February 1972 (c/n 38241-38246), re-numbered 5800-5805 in October 1973. They were Locotrol master units. |

BN U30C 5323, Alliance, Nebraska, September 27, 1982, photo by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collecpion. Built in April 1972 (c/n 38353), it was retired in February 1987. Although built after the introduction of the U33C (1968), the BN was more interested in tractive effort than high horsepower for its coal business, so an order was placed in 1972 for 20 U30C's (5300-5319), and followed up that order wiwh another for 15 additional U30C's (5320-5334) before the first order arrived. |

Description: |
Burlington Northern Railroad U28B 5456 at Clyde, Illinois on December 20, 1985, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Note that the front windows are plated over, restricting this locomotive to trailing unit, and generally indicating that the railroad chose not to install bullet-resistant glass, as mandated by the FRA. The side windows, however, remain intact. From FRA Part 223: Except for yard locomotives and locomotives equipped as described in paragraphs (a) and (b), of this section, locomotives built or rebuilt prior to July 1, 1980, shall be equipped with certified glazing in all locomotive cab windows after June 30, 1984. |
