AMTK 188 |
Description: |
AMTK 188 zipping rapidly across the Columbia River train bridge and into the curved station platform in Vancouver as our winter sun drops below the Oregon hills in the distance on our rare treat to sunset before services (almost made the stink-eye from the beloved worthwhile since waiting for the arrival of the evening northbound passenger service put us sliding into the church parking lot just ten minutes before the top of the hour... if you want to send your condolences to her, Id be happy to pass them along... it was a little frosty by the time we arrived at church that evening. Did I mention I got the shot I wanted? (or at least close enough)) |

AMTK 94 |
Description: |
AMTK 94 stopped for load/unload in her transition from westbound (from Spokane (WA) and Chicago) to southbound run. Not sure how many stations pull this, but the routine is to block the at-grade crossing with passengers unloading on the newly formed platform (before it was a trudge across uneven gravel and ballast!), keep it stopped in the crossing until cleared, then hit the gas to cross the bridge (visible right off the near prow of the station) across the Columbia River to head into Portland (Oregon). Then again, I guess you do what you have to when youre positioned at a wye junction right on the edge of a river with only one bridge available. Shed pulled in right as BNSF 6617s triple play mixed freight had come through to the immediate left of this frame to split north and into the by-pass area... and this was shot as the crossing to the east started with the sounding of approaching double-stack with BNSF 4166 (confused yet? I was - not sure where to aim the camera when - not sure how the folks do it with interlock crossings! (Maybe they have better views and dont have to rely on sound to guess whos coming from where because every direction is practically blocked for any distance). |

BNSF 4166 leading a southbound-to-eastbound transition through the wye with less than five or ten seconds of "gate up" time from the mixed freight that just came across this at-grade crossing - all while the westbound-to-southbound Amtrak came through - something not previously possible without the new by-pass lane... maybe they were onto something with that freight-vs-passenger snarl that mightve been happening, because 90° to the right of the frame, the Arriving from Spokane and Chicago is paused and preparing to take off, having arrived in the few seconds separating the gate shifts here. |

Terrible thing to have crossed the bridge and forget to check the rearview mirror to ensure the load was back there. |

Instead, look in the Felida, WA folder where I managed to accidentally catch the entire show passing through a meet-and-pass forty-five minutes later when on a lark, I drove down to the local moorage on the way back home having caught so little my first half-hour of train hunting. In fact, we can head over to the folder now, because thats my next stop of the day anyway. |

BNSF 4044 |
Description: |
BNSF 4044 fourth of five in the penta-power set stopped - possibly frozen on the rails - although Im pretty sure its just the wind chill making me unable to feel my fingers as I near the end of the p`atform closest to the river. |

BNSF 8080 and BNSF 2752 |
Description: |
BNSF 8080 and BNSF 2752 as seen after stepping down the platform a dozen or two yards and looking back shows how after just five power units, things start to disappear into the freezing fog. What I cant figure out is how the wind can be howling through the area *with* fog - I thought they were supposed to be mutually exclusive. |

AMTK 44 and AMTK 818 |
Description: |
AMTK 44 shooting into Vancouver before I can fully get into position - so this is completely camera angle - we didnt get *that* much snow. And the wonderful "fast" (sarcasm marks) Sony manages to miss every one of the AMTK 818 (odd - this is the number on the starboard side partially visible in several frames - yet the following week, I have 189 as the number two unit - albeit the second unit does switch which end is facing north - just found it interesting... too bad "I" missed all the shots) just off her aft section (yes - I know I can set it up to shoot 10 frames in about 2 seconds... but the recovery time after doing that is so huge, you learn quickly NOT to do it because itll process each of the images and display them (and I have my chimp mode set to off/zero) so even snapping two or three frames, not the entire ten results in five to ten seconds of camera down time - not that I just love my Sony (moderate sarcasm marks) camera - but, uh, dang - did Canon really have me that spoiled?) - northbound double header passenger service making a super-fast stop in Vancouver before quickly accelerating away before I can even get around the corner and into the station to try and snag some additional power shots. |

BNSF 2935 |
Description: |
BNSF 2935 southern sister of the bridge-protection pair with setting sun glinting off her nose, small drifts sit happily upon her brow as we enjoy a day of sun - vague proof there really is something above the clouds. (And the Sony *almost* got it in focus/adequate sharpness: 1/1000s f3.5 28mm equivalent ISO 125 - but I emphasize - at that speed and this close to the subject at that tiny of a lens zoom - I wouldnt expect anything less than practically *everything* being in actual sharp focus - not "almost.") |

AMTK 44 - AMTK 189 with barely enough time to jog down the length of the platform and get into position, the sun chooses that moment to crack through the smallest of openings down beloK the horizon to give a little color to the clouds against the deep blue shadows of early evening moments before this pair rushes off to the north. |
