Seimens M1 Interior, Picture 2,
Description:
Heres a shot right down the middle of the aisle. The M1s come in two seating configurations that I know of, one without any seats facing inward, and one with them, like this one. To the best of my knowledge, nearly everyone prefers this configuration, as the former obstructs seating, standing, and movement through the coach. Generally speaking, I cant think of what moron would think that using seats not facing inward on a Metro train would be a good idea, as Ive nearly had my knees taken out, or been shoved into the seats by rude people, on multiple occassions. For that matter, I think that ALL of the seats should face in, as on the old Russian Metro trains that were still in use when I moved to Prague. This is the system used on the New York City subway, the Tokyo subway, the Budapest Metro, and most of the London Underground (with the exception of the Metropolitan and East London Lines), so its a no-brainer that its quite standard throughout the world for a reason.

Haje Metro Station, Picture 2
Description:
DPP started to take delivery of their Seimens M1 Metro trains in 1998, but it took until 2003 for them to fully replace the Communist-era trains on the C-Line, or red line. By the time I arrived a few years later, they were already badly vandalised, but since that time theyve been cleaned up. Really, Prague needs more of them, on the C-Line and elsewhere, but DPP are stalling on buying new rolling stock. The trains have become quite overloaded in the past two years, and still the problem continues. On this night, however, the trains were pretty empty because it was too early for the clubbers to be coming home, yet too late for most of them to be heading out, even though it was Saturday.

I.P. Pavlova Metro Station
Description:
This is the I.P. Pavlova Metro station, one of the oldest on the system, built around 1970, if Im not mistaken. Construction of the Metro lasted from about 1967-1974, with service starting between what is now Florenc (then called Sokolovska) and Kacerov in 1974.

The ceiling in the platform area of Andel would have no doubt looked quite futuristic in 1977, although I dont know if its original. I brings to mind sci-fi movies of the period.

Andel Metro Station
Description:
Moskevska station, on the B-Line, now known as Andel, was built between 1977 and 1985, and was one of the original B-Line stations. It also featured more Communist propaganda in its design than any other station, especially the bronzes along the platforms celebrating the Moscow Olympics in 1980, as well as the Soviet space programme. Another theme was the "friendship" or "peace" between Moscow and Prague.......since the Soviet army invaded Prague in 1968 to ensure this would always be the case. In spite of the Soviet Unions fall, and the Velvet Revolution against Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, the modern-day Czech authorities have left the Andel station alone, with the only change being the name change to Andel in 1990.

Luziny Metro Station, Picture 2,
Description:
The Luziny Metro Station, on Line B, was constructed in 1994 as part of the Nove Butovice-Zlicin expansion. Line B actually opened in 1985 on a more limited route from Florenc-Smichovske Nadrazi, and didnt reach its current extent (Zlicin-Cerny Most) until 1998. Kolbenova station is even newer, dating to 2001. In any case, Luziny is on of the most distinctive on the Metro system both because its above ground and because it has these palm trees encased in glass.

Luziny Metro Station, Picture 6,
Description:
Heres a 81-71M Class Metro train, originally built in the Soviet Union and based on Moscow Metro trains, the 81-71 Class have now been fully rebuilt with new seats and interiors, as well as modern electronics, making them 81-71Ms. The 81-71 Class were not the first Prague Metro trains, though, as the first trains had been Ecs Class Metro trains similar to those now used in Budapest. The A (green) and B (yellow) lines now use them exclusively, while the C Line uses the new Seimens M1s.

Depo Hostivar Metro Station
Description:
Ive got some older photos of Depo Hostivar from when it opened in 2006, but Im saving them for a more special occasion. This is how the station looks today, and its still the newest A Line station since the A hasnt been extended to Ruzyne airport yet. Originally it was a normal part of the depot, as far as I know, so basically the trains still run into the former depo buildings above ground, with the throat being the only aboveground part of the Prague Metro currently used for revenue service.

Semaphore up at Nadrazi Ruzyne
Description:
Nadrazi Ruzyne, in spite of sharing a name with the nearby airport, is nevertheless not the best way to get to the airport. In that case, you would be better off getting the Metro to the north end of the A Line at Dejvicka, and then getting either bus #119, or bus #AE, which is more expensive, but an express. Nadrazi Ruzyne actually serves the Prague suburb of Ruzyne, and is still very steam-era-looking, complete with upper-quadrant semaphore signals. It still has its interlocking boxes, too, although I dont know if theyre actually whats controlling the signals.

Freight at Sunset in Zizkov
Description:
This was a lucky shot that I got walking into Zizkov at dusk, which actually meant quite late at night, as during the summer in Prague it doesnt start to get dark until after 2100 hours. This looks to be a Class 111 with a rake of auto racks, although whether these are new cars or the cars of rail passengers (to be coupled to a long-distance passenger train) I dont know. The bridge was built after I moved to Prague, around 2007 or so (It took awhile to build, starting around 2005) as part of major rerouting of the mainlines through Karlin and Zizkov. On this particular night, I had the chance to walk one of the recently abandoned roadbeds (if Im not mistaken), only recently converted to a bike path. It would be cool to post some info on that sometime soon, but I havent got proper photos of it since I didnt have enough light on this particular night.

Nadrazi Klatovy
Description:
A woman who I was travelling with pointed out this station to me as a bit of a landmark in railway architecture. It was built after World War II, although I think it bears more of a resemblance to stations built in the 1930s. The city itself, for many years known by its German name of Klattau, has long been home to some of the richest Czechs, being originally built with the profits from nearby gold mines in the 14th Century. In more recent decades it has been a resort town, partly for skiing. The town, like most of its era, also has a castle, which now features an art gallery.

Seats on Arriva ALEX Coach, Praha Hlavni Nadrazi,
Description:
Eurocity services between Prague and Munich are at least partly contracted out to Arriva at the moment. Given Arrivas history in Britain, this surprises me, although we werent too horribly late into Munich in the end, just late. Some of this was Ceske Drahys fault (or rather the fault of the Czech track authority), though, as most of the delays happened in Plzensky Kraj. The ALEX coaches include many ex-CD coaches like this one, mildly rebuilt with new seats.

This Class 451 "Pantograph" is working a service to Hlavni Nadrazi, departing Hostivar. Im unaware of whether this train originated in Benesov or Strancice, but it would be one or the other.

Hi-Rail Ditch Digger On Old Linka 011
Description:
For some reason, this hi-rail ditch digger has been parked here on the old line for some time, in spite of the fact that a regular ditch digger will now do. I dont know how long its been here, but its clearly not abandoned.

Pendolino on New Linka 011 Seen from Old Linka 011
Description:
This is a shot I got from the old bridge on the old Linka 011. Obviously, when I saw the chance for a shot of the Pendolino I didnt turn it down.

Pendolino on New Linka 011 Seen from Old Linka 011, Cropped Version
Description:
This is a crop of the previous shot, illustrating the advantages of film, although I feel like I could have focused it better. Im a little bit skeptical about the adjustment of the eyepiece of my camera (it adjusts to your glasses prescription, and I dont know how to set it 100% right).

Old Linka 011, Picture 4
Description:
This is one of the bridges on the old line, crossing Husitska, which if Im not mistaken I saw trins running over in my early years of living in Prague. For that matter, Im fairly certain that Ive been over it many times on trains.

Old Linka 011, Picture 7
Description:
This is as far as I hiked on this trip, as far as Cajirna nad Vokem, a tea house that now has an entrance on the ex-rail line. I dont know if it predates the conversion of the line, but now it is well integrated with it.

Old Linka 011
Description:
This is the first serious photo of my walking tour of the old mainline "Linka 011," or the Prague connection to it via the East throat of Hlavni Nadrazi, which was recently, and very quickly, converted to a bike and hiking trail. Actually, the trail is so new that Google Earth still shows this line as it was before conversion. I formerly listed this as Linka 171 by mistake. 171 is actually for westbound traffic, whereas this line is for eastbound traffic towards Kolin, Poricany, Pardubice, and so on. I'm fairly certain also, given my travels, that I was over this line many times in its last years of operation, which might make it the first rail line that I rode prior to abandonment, unless the abandonment of the old DL&W Utica-Chenango Forks pre-dates it. They were both abandoned around the same time, although the DL&W was only abandoned Norwich-Chenango Forks (unless I'm mistaken). I've also done a video version of this, shot several weeks later, but I haven't released it either online or on DVD, as it's sort of unpolished. I haven't decided whether I ever will release it, so this photo series will be all for now.
