Steps On Old Linka 011
Description:
This is a concrete staircase that Im fairly sure is of new construction, that helps hikers and bikers on the old Linka 011 bike trail to climb further up Vitkov (or whatever mountain this is).

Train On The New Linka 011
Description:
This is the new Linka 011, which is much straighter than the original line, and is double-track all the way, in contrast to the old line, which was oddly single-track over much of its length, maybe a legacy of lower-traffic times. This new line, in order to achieve its more favourable grade, is constructed over a series of viaducts over Karlin, and through tunnels, until finally levelling out on the ground slightly out of town. On the old line, there is one tunnel thats being converted to be part of the bike trail, but the use of tunnels isnt as extensive on the old grade.

ZSSK 350 Class Electric
Description:
One of the odd things about my Sony Ericsson Walkman W302 cameraphone is that when I take a shot of something passing by it quickly, not only does the subject blur, but it appears tilted diagonally, as here. I especially noticed this behaviour on the Brno trip, and I still havent figured out exactly what causes it. This photo is of a ZSSK (Slovak Railways) Class 350 electric, which would have at one time been a CSD locomotive when the Czech Republic and Slovakia were united, along with their national railways. These locomotives were built by Skoda from 1974 until 1976, put out 4,000Kw (5,365 horsepower), and could operate (and still do) at speeds of up to 160Km/h (100 m.p.h.), meaning that they can be used on the fastest Eurocity and Intercity services in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

CD 230041-6
Description:
Heres a rather odd class of electric locomotive, the Class 230. Built by Skoda from 1966-1967 for Ceskoslovenske Drahy, these streamlined, very retro-looking locomotives are still in service on Ceske Drahy today, although some were exported to Bulgaria in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Theyre rated at 3,080Kw, or 4,130 horsepower, which would still have been very impressive at the time, and they have a maximum service speed of 110Km/h (68 m.p.h.), meaning that theyre already obsolete for express passenger services. This one is marked, however, for the CD Cargo business unit, so its probably well-utilised.

Description:
Im not sure why I opted to keep this shot. Its a bit too blurry to fully satisfy me, but I think the combination of the trainshed and the City Elefant, even if I cant read the number, combined with the passengers on the left, makes for a nice scene. This was as I was waiting for my train to Brno.

Nadrazi Brezova nad Nisou
Description:
Like Brandys, Brezova is another town name. The Czech Wikipedia lists 13 towns and villages with this name, so the "nad....." is important whenever you say the towns name. This is the train station in Brezova nad Svitavou, right on the Bohemian-Moravian border. Im assuming its in Moravia for the sake of simplicity.

Nadrazi Usti nad Orlici
Description:
Following on the existing theme of towns with the same name in the Czech Republic, heres Usti nad Orlici, as opposed to the better-known Usti nad Labem. This station building looks quintessentially Central European to me, perhaps even Austrian, which makes some sense given that Bohemia and Moravia used to be part of the Austrian Empire.

PKP EU07-446
Description:
Ive increasingly been noticing PKP (Polish Railways) electric locomotives venturing into the Czech Republic lately, although I dont know very much about them. I saw this one sitting in a siding in Pardubice, an unlikely location for a foreign locomotive to be parked since few international services originate or terminate in Pardubice.

Dual-Gauge Tram Track Near the Zoo
Description:
I took this at the zoo stop on the DPML (Liberec) tram system. The dual gauge is in order to facilitate operation to Jablonec, which has a 1-metre narrow-gauge tram system. Actually, as pre-1990s tram lines go, this route is relatively new, having not been completed until 1955. Since 1969, however, the line to Liberec has been the only surviving tram line in Jablonec, and is now operated by DPML. Even the line to Liberec saw sporadic use in the 1970s and 1980s, as reconstruction work was done, and planning argued over. The current operation dates to December 17th, 1989, exactly one month after the Velvet Revolution. The line is currently under reconstruction again, so Im not aware of what the current service disruptions are. It is proposed as part of the new rebuilding to convert the Jablonec line to standard gauge, but I didnt see evidence of this for certain when I was in Jablonec or Liberec.

The Haje Metro was under reconstruction at one end when I took this, with the eskalators being replaced. If you look carefully through the space above the boards here, you can see that the station originally had staircases, or maybe they were built under the escalators as backup.

For most of my time in the Czech Republic, Ceske Drahy passenger cars have been painted blue!and grey for local services, except for DMUs, which are red and cream or orange, yellow and green, while rychliks, intercities, Eurocities, have generally been green and grey. Some attempt has been made a standardisbtion in the past year, though, as many of the green and grey long-distance (rychlik/IC/EC) coaches have been painted blue and grey. Blurred Metro Train In Staromestska
Description:
In going through my old cameraphone shots to find ones that might be suitable for iPernity, I found this one of a DPP 81-71M Class Metro train blurring into Staromestska station on Linka A. I actually have a few shots similar to this one, so I wasnt sure whether to post it, especially since its a cameraphone shot, but I decided to post it to iPernity, and then to here.

After walking through Fantova Kavarna, I got lost in the construction, and ended up on Nastupiste (Platform) 1, where this Pendolino was sitting. Given that I dont get a shot of these every day, I took the picture even though my Ikoflex was empty and so I only had the cameraphone (as was the case with the earlier Hlavni Nadrazi shots in this series).

Ive never shot a photo from this angle before, from the hallway shown earlier, facing into Fantova Kavarna. Fantova Kavarna is the most noticably unrestored part of the station, although with all the statues and paintwork this may be due to the difficulty that will be involved once they get around to it.

I got back from my Cercany trip early enough to get the sunlight through the windows of Hlavni Nadrazi, and in addition I had to walk through this front hall (on the Wilsonova side of the station), which I rarely use, in order to get to the metro. This is one of the few parts of the station that hasnt been restored yet, although the paint looks to be in pretty good condition.

Beer Van in the CD Muzeum
Description:
The title pretty much says it all. This is a beer van, or boxcar, that doesnt appear to be refrigerated. In reality, beer doesnt need to be refrigerated until maybe the time of serving, so that makes sense. I dont know for certain, but I assume that crew shelter is for a security guard rather than a brakeman, as beer theft seems a likely possibility in Czechoslovakia. Does anybody know for certain?

Im pretty sure this was at Praha-Radotin, although it could have been Smichov. Its too blurred to tell for sure. The combination of the rain and the slow shutter (again because of dark and gloomy weather late in the day) resulted in this sort of impressionistic look for a Class 451 or 452 "Pantograph" EMU sitting in the station.

CD 103001-4 in the CD Muzeum
Description:
Supposedly built out of an old E436 Class electric, this locomotive would have been built sometime in 1927 or 1928 by CKD, in spite of its relatively modern Ceske Drahy markings. Power originally would have been 806Kw (1081 horsepower), although I know know if thats what it puts out now. Originally its top speed would have been 60Km/h, which again for a locomotive this small and this old, which appears to be only a switcher, is rather impressive. I note that this locomotive also lacks a pantograph, in spite of being built originally to run on 1,500 volts DC, which is much more than is typically delivered through a third rail. Any further historical information on this locomotive would be welcome, as Ive been able to find what I have only through piecemeal skimming of Czech websites. As with a lot of locomotives at Luzna, Ill have to dig out my books to properly trace the history back, and even then I may be able to use your help.

CD 720058-7 in the CD Muzeum
Description:
#720058-7 is one of the many Class 720 diesel locomotives that were built in 1958-1961 by CKD for CSD, the DR (in East Germany), Albanian Railways, and the Iraq Railroad. Today, theyre of secondary importance on CD, many of them working for construction contractors, although they were always primarily switchers rather than road switchers, having only 551Kw (739 horsepower). This is in spite of their hood-unit construction, which makes them look beefier.

CD Class 749 Diesel Locomotive
Description:
Next to the interlocking is this battered (but apparently crudely repainted) CD Class 749 diesel. The CD number has been removed, and the old CSD number reinstalled on the side, although I dont have a picture of the number handy right now. This locomotive is also at the entrance to the Ceske Drahy Muzeum, off to the left in this picture, where I shot many, many pictures both with my cameraphone and with my Nikon (the next day), and my cameraphone shots are going to be posted here. My Ektachromes from the Nikon will eventually find their way into an NRHS show, I hope.

Coal Stove on an Old CSD Passenger Train
Description:
This was after I got on. As Ive said already, CSD kept some very old fashioned passenger car technology until comparatively late in their history, with some wooden passenger cars from the 1940s being heated by coal stoves like this one. American and British trains stopped using these with the advent of steam heating in the 1880s and 1890s, as the combination of coal stoves and wooden construction was thought to constitute a fire hazard.

Im not 100% certain, but Im pretty sure that this is a camp car for MOW service, given the configuration of the windows, and the small baggage door. It could also be a combine or a brake van, but a combine would have a bigger$door, I think. Again, more research might uncover something interesting.

1954&CSD Rulebook

Like a lot of railway museums, the CD Muzeum has a book collection, and some of the books are on display. This is an operating rulebook from 1954, with the first chapter devoted to locomotive operation. One of the rules on the first pahe dictates that affixed to the front of CSD locomotives, there had to be a red star, the "international symbol of the workers." See the next photo for more details.

I took all still photos on the 16th with my cameraphone, as the batteries in my Nikon died at Beroun (actually, they had probably been dead for weeks). I did some proper photography the next day, which I hope to eventually include in an NRHS show. The video that I shot on the 16th, however, will be yet another NRHS show.

ex-CSD 498.022, the "Albatros," Picture 3
Description:
This was the scene as the Albatross cylinder cocks were blown for the run into the museum. Even on a very short move, this is an important procedure on a steam locomotive, as even a little bit of water in the cylinders can blow them up, which is dangerous and extremely expensive, especially for a non-profit organisation.

Ex-CSD 324.391 in the CD Muzeum
Description:
#324.391 is a little bit harder to research than the other locomotives at the museum, but the museum has a bit of information on their website. It was built in 1908 by StEG (the predecessor to the OBB) at Maschinenfabrik Wien, but ended up on the Buštehrad Railway, which was nationalised into CSD in the 1920's. Because it had worked for a smaller railway, when it ended up on CSD it was too antiquated and small to be anything but a shunter (switcher), having only 175kW (235 horsepower) and being capable of only 50Km/h. Given how little power it had, it's amazing it could even do 50Km/h with even a light load. In spite of this, it survived into the 1960's in Karlovy Vary, and survived even longer as a stationary boiler, although it is no longer operable. Like some other locomotives at the museum, it actually is the property of the Narodni Technicky Muzeum in Prague.

Ex-CSD 354.195 and KND 29 in the CD Muzeum
Description:
The locomotive on the left in this picture is former CSD #354.195, and the locomotive on the right is an old industrial locomotive numbered 29 that worked on the KND industrial railway, which served lime quarries in Kladno from 1858 to 1968. 354.195 is a 354.1 Class (by the CSD classification system) 4-6-2T (some sources mistakenly say that this is a 2-6-2, so maybe originally it was, see here:
http://www.laenderbahn-forum.de/journal/die_reihe_429_k-k-priv-suedbahn/bilder/429_Micro-Metakit_CSD-354-640x426.jpg
) based on an old Austrian design from 1917, but built in 1925 by CMK, one of the predecessors to CKD. After the creation of Czechoslovakia and CSD, these locomotives remained in production until 1941, being produced by CKD and Skoda. More confusing is that the museum website classifies it as a tender locomotive, which it clearly isn't. Maybe it was at one time, as #354.7152 is, although 354.7152 is also a 4-6-2. Rated power for the 354.1 Class is 830kW (1113 horsepower, although the museum rounds this up to 1150), while the top speed is 80Km/h. Originally, 236 locomotives were in the fleet, and 354.195 is one of the few still running (I'm not aware exactly how many more there are, but 354.7152 is pictured on the museum website in steam). #354.195's regular mainline career spanned into the 1970's. #29 is an 0-6-0T, and was built by Skoda in 1950, being one of an order of 8. Other than this, though, information on the historical placard was sparse, and because it's an industrial locomotive I haven't been able to get too much more information about it.

Ex-CSD #3624 in the CD Muzeu
Description:
mThis is another steamer that I dont know much about, partly because the number, 3624, is probably not accurate. I cant find it on any of the rosters. I do note that this locomotive looks very similar to the 0-6-0T's used by the Plzensky Prazdroj brewery, although I don't have a side view handy right now to check if this one is an 0-6-0T.
