Ex-CSD 433.049 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 433.049 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  433.049 is one of 60 2-8-2T's built by CKD in 1948. The power rating on the Class 433's is 600kW (805 horsepower), and the maximum speed is 60Km/h, meaning that if these were mixed traffic locomotives, mostly for branchlines. They survived into 1980, and as the museum website explains "These locomotives last served in the depots in Prostejov and Skalice nad Svitavou. This is also the origin of the nickname “Skalicák”."

Ex-CSD 434.2298 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 434.2298 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  #434.2298 was one of 345 434.2 Class 2-8-0's built between 1924 and 1947 by CKD, and by CSD's own shops. #434.2298 is special, though, because it was built out of an older locomotive from Weiner Neustadt that dated to 1914. I don't know the exact date that #434.2298 was rebuilt, however. The museum's own website is confusing in this regard. The 434.2 Class was based on an earlier Austrian design dating back to 1897 (hence the reason, perhaps, for the rebuild), and was quite modern for its day. It's superheater was often noted, although most new mainline locomotives around the world were superheated by 1924. Later builds after 1939 had larger superheaters than earlier ones, but were counted as part of the same class. The most powerful 434.2 Class locomotives of all put out 1400 horsepower (in spite of weighing only 69.5 metric tonnes, with an adhesive weight of 58), and could pull a 600 tonne train up a 10% grade at 30Km/h, a truly extraordinary achievement by the standards of any era. On level track, however, only 60Km/h was possible. Such heavy haulers as these were clearly intended as freight locomotives, but many were used also on passenger trains (as old photos will confirm), and #434.2186 remains in service with CD as an excursion locomotive (although #434.2298 is inoperable, and not even owned by the CD Muzeum, being from the Narodni Technicky Muzeum collection in Prague). Wikipedia claims that the 434.2 Class remained in regular service on CSD until 1983, but this contradicts most of the other sources that I've read, which put the last year of mainline steam on CSD as 1982. Of course, some units may have been kept as backup locomotives until 1983, just as some American railroads kept steam backup locomotives into 1963, in spite of the last regularly scheduled mainline steam trips being ended in 1960.

Ex-CSD 44312 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 44312 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  Im not aware of the precise history of #44312, but I do note that its of wood construction, with screw couplers (it looks like) leaf springs and two carbody-mounted axles, but with automatic air brakes. Therefore, it could be quite old, although some mid-19th-century design features survived on CSD into the 1940s, so looks can be deceiving. I do not that at the moment 44312 is being used to store steam locomotive parts.

Ex-CSD 477.043 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 477.043 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  #477.043 is a CSD Class 477 4-8-4T, making it one of the only 4-8-4's built for use in Europe. That it's a tank makes it even more unusual, in addition to its three cylinders and Kylchap double-blastpipe chimney. However, the 477 "Papousek" (Parrot) Class numbered 60 units in its heyday. The 477's were built by CKD from 1951 (I don't have a final production year, but this one was built in 1954), and remained in CSD service until 1981, being some of the last mainline steam locomotives to operate on CSD. #477.043 had an even longer career, however, becoming an industrial locomotive at a power plant in Malesice, not making it into the museum's collection until 2000. They were primarily suburban or express passenger locomotives, in spite of their odd configuration, and could run at up to 100Km/h, although no faster, maybe because they were tank engines, and maybe because CSD simply didn't have very good track for high speed running. Power was 1595kW (2139 horsepower, although the museum rounds this to 2100). Service weight was 130 tonnes, which was above average both for a Czech tank engine and for a Czech locomotive generally. Today, #477.043 still runs, and can occasionally be seen on excursion trains, although on the day I visited the CD Muzeum it wasn't in steam. It's officially allocated to Louny, but again not everything is what it seems.

CSD 498.022, the "Albatros," Being Watered at the CD Muzeum
Title:  CSD 498.022, the "Albatros," Being Watered at the CD Muzeum
Description:  Heres the Albatros being watered for its return trip to Praha Branik. This water spout is the one located within the museum grounds, next to the coal bunker. In the lower left corner of this photo you can also see an ashpit, which might double as an inspection pit. Its cramped, though, so probably they would be better off using one in the shops.

Ex-CSD 524.159 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 524.159 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  #524.159 is a Class 524.1 2-10-2T which, surprisingly, would have been used in mixed traffic, particularly on mountainous routes. As with the 434, there was more than one specification that qualified as a 524.1 Class, so I don't know the exact specs of this one (although the museum has some of them, which sound like round figures). It would have, however, a top speed between 55 and 60Km/h, and would have a power rating of either 935kW (1254 horsepower) or 1030kW (1381 horsepower). The museum claims 935kW or 1250 horsepower and 55Km/h for #524.159. These locomotives had a very long production run, like the 434.2 Class, so that may explain why the 524.1 Class also has more than one accepted specification. The 162 locomotives of the 524.1 Class were produced from 1918 until 1943 by CKD and Skoda, and weren't pulled from service until 1980, making them some of the last mainline steam locomotives in Czechoslovakia. Supposedly #524.159 was built by CKD in 1929, but the museum doesn't give a date of retirement.

Ex-CSD 555.0301 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 555.0301 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  This is actually not a Czech locomotive or a Soviet locomotive, but a German Kriegslok from World War II (built by Wiener Lokomotivfabrik, Floridsdorf in 1943) that's been disguised as a Soviet locomotive, as it would have later served on RZD in the Soviet Union after being claimed as reparations. These locomotives became the RZD TE Class, and #555.0301 was one of 100 purchased from RZD in 1962-1963 for heavy freight service. With 1178kW ( 1580 horsepower) they had more power than the typical Czech locomotive, and they were also very fast for a Czech freight locomotive, being capable of 80Km/h in service. Of course, they weren't Czech. During their RZD service, they were converted to run on Russian 1524mm broad-gauge track, but obviously CSD converted them back to 1435mm standard-gauge. After serving into the 1970's, the Kriegsloks on CSD were put back into military use, although this time as reserve locomotives. Many European governments stashed steam locomotives away in the 1950's-1990's, expecting an oil shortage should a total war break out, but the Czech government gave up this policy in 1993, at least for the Kriegsloks, thus freeing up this locomotive for historic preservation. Unfortunately, it doesn't still run, in spite of having been kept for service so late.

CD 735175-2 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  CD 735175-2 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  A diesel-electric mixed-traffic road switcher, the 735 Class were introduced in 1971 and built until 1979 by TS Martin. All were withdrawn by 2002, and this one looks a bit beat up, albeit preserved in the CD Muzeum as a stationary exhibit. The ditch lights are smashed, but surprisingly theres little graffiti on it. I dont know how many parts have been scrounged or stolen from inside it, though.

Title:  Ex-CSD Ci4-1732 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  This is an old open-platform wooden coach, which appears to be in pretty good shape, good enough to be serviceable. Its possible to see coaches like this on excursion trains in the Czech Republic, and my understanding is that they were used quite late in mainline and branchline service, too. Some were in fact built as late as the 1940s, in spite of being 50 years out of date by that point.

Ex-CSD M124.001 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD M124.001 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  This is another unit that I can't get info on right now. It's M designation would indicate a DMU, a gas-electric doodlebug, or something similar, but it's actually a "steam motor car" or "steam carriage," built in 1903 by Ringhoffer, which would make it of Austrian kkStB heritage, originally carrying the number 1001. Since kkStB's Czech stock was transferred to CSD eventually, that's how it got its CSD number. In actuality, it was one of two such steam motor cars intended for use on the Czech Northern Railway, which proved to be too steep for them, and kkStB ended up with them after they were rejected. Both were originally called "Komarek" steam motor cars, and in contrast to the originally rural setting that they were supposed to operate in, they ended up in suburban services out of Prague. They were phased out of this service before the end of steam on CSD, though, with #M124.001 ending up in the Narodni Technicky Muzeum as early as 1949. As far as I know, #M124.001 is the only surviving unit now, and the CD Muzeum claim that it is the oldest operating steam vehicle in their collection.

Ex-CSD M131.1238
Title:  Ex-CSD M131.1238
Description:  M131.1238 is an M131 Class railbus, later reclassified a Class 801 under the 1988 renumbering scheme. These units were produced from 1948 until 1956 by Tatra, eventually totalling 549 for the fleet, a very large number when you consider that none remain in service today, as all were withdrawn by 1984, a service lifespan of only 36 years, with some serving less than 30. Their small size may have had something to do with this, as they could only seat 48 people to a modern 810 Classs 55, plus 40 standees, along with their maximum speed of 60Km/h compared with 80Km/h for an 810. Other antiquated features would have been their mechanical transmissions (compared to the 810s hydraulic transmission), and their antiquated Tatra T 301 engines, which were based on the old Tatra T111 from Tatras World War II-era trucks, that in spite of having 14.8 liters displacement from 12 cylinders, only produced about 155-160 horsepower.

As most Czech diesels are diesel-electrics, the 710 Class is unusual in that it is a diesel-hydraulic. Power is only 300Kw (402 horsepower), which is another factor making these units obsolete. Although I dont know T3340869s construction date, the 710 Class were built from 1961 to 1973 by CKD, and while old, are still used on CD today, although in smaller and smaller numbers, of course. Originally>designed as switchers, and lot of them are now used by private rail construction contractors, and some have been exported to Germany, Hungary, Serbia, and Sweden. Many also were also transferred to ZSSK in Slovakia after 1993. This unit is more or less in the original CSD livery, other than that it doesnt have a red star on the nose.

Ex-CSD T435.0145 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD T435.0145 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  Built between 1958 and >961 by CKD, these road switchers were reclassified as CSD (later CD) Class 720 under the 1988 renumbering. Out of 150 built for CSD and 83 for Czech industrial railways, a nuober of them are still in service, although mostly as MOW units. In addition to the Czech units, some were exported to Albania, Iraq, and East Germany.

Ex-CSD T466.0286 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD T466.0286 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  T466.0286 is the same class as 735175-2, although its still carrying its pre-1988 number and is also in much better condition. To review the facts, it would have been produced between 1971 and 1979 by TS Martin, one of a class of 299 units, it has a power rating of 800kW (1073 horsepower), and a top speed of 90Km/h. It could have served as late as 2002, but after that time the last units of the class were withdrawn.

Ex-CSD T478.3101 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD T478.3101 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  #T478.3101 is a CSD T478.3 Class "Brejlevec" or "bespectacled" diesel. Im not aware of the built date, but locomotives of this class were built by CKD between 1968 and 1977. They were later classified CSD, and then CD, Class 753. They put out 1325kW (1777 horsepower) of power, and can run at up to 100Km/h (62 m.p.h.). In spite of this low maximum speed, some are still used on passenger services, although it stands to reason that the vast majority are used for freight. #T478.3101 is painted in one of the original Communist-era liveries with the red star on the nose.

Ex-CSD T669.0085 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD T669.0085 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  This is a nicely-restored Class T669 diesel road switcher, although I dont know if its operable. Im assuming it is, since it wouldnt make sense to go to this much trouble without restoring it completely. Maybe Im wrong. In any case, these locomotives were introduced in 1963, being built both by CKD and SMZ Dubica, and stayed in production until 1979, according to Wikipedia. Total production was 109, although not all of these survive today. The original power rating for them was 993kW (1332 horsepower), and the maximum speed was 90Km/h, adequate for freight service but not really ideal for passenger service. These locomotives were particularly liked as very heavy switchers. Note the C trucks, which arent as common on Czech diesels as on American diesels. Some were rebuilt in 1967-1969, and some still run in regular service today, although most of them work for companies other than CD, as CSD and later CD lost interest in them as electrification was extended. Some were also built for export to the Soviet Union, Iraq, Syria, Albania, Poland, and India.

Freight Cars in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Freight Cars in the CD Muzeum
Description:  These narrow-gauge tracks (in the foreground) appear a bit broader, so again Id like to look them up. The freight cars on them are noticably bigger too, although the gondola in the background is standard gauge.

Oil/electric Light on Ex-CSD 498.022, the Albatros, at Nadrazi Praha-Branik
Title:  Oil/electric Light on Ex-CSD 498.022, the Albatros, at Nadrazi Praha-Branik
Description:  While I was taking some parting shots of #498.022, I noticed that the taillights and the headlights (really ditchlights in modern terms because of their position) appeared to have been converted at some point to electric power, or maybe they had been either oil or electric all along (that could also be a gas fitting, but it looks like oil to me, and railway lights more often were oil than gas in the old days). Therefore, I felt the need to take this photo. I originally marked this down as a headlight (which means ditchlight), but now that Im thinking back on it I think this was one of the taillights, before it was extinguished (the train arrived in Branik with #498.022 running in reverse).

Kraluper Mineral Oil Tanker in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Kraluper Mineral Oil Tanker in the CD Muzeum
Description:  A number of standard-gauge freight cars are also displayed at the museum, one of them this Kraluper Mineral Oil tanker. Im fairly certain that this one is very old, as it has German markings, something that would have been very rare after 1946.

Merkur Tinplate Trains in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Merkur Tinplate Trains in the CD Muzeum
Description:  Merkur are better known for their erector sets, but at one time they also built tinplate toy trains. Im not sure about the scale of these, but they could be O. They look close to it, anyway. Does anybody know? Nowadays Merkur specialise in TT Scale, although their website only had track the last time I looked.

Title:  Mine Carts in the CD Muzeum
Description:  I'm not aware of what mine these mining carts were used in, but theyre clearly narrow-gauge, possibly narrower than the other narrow-gauge exhibits at the museum. I wouldnt mind getting some information on the gauges of the display"tracks at the museum, so Im going to log onto the internet as soon as possible and find out.

Model of CD 380 Class Electric in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Model of CD 380 Class Electric in the CD Muzeum
Description:  I dont know what company makes this CD 380 Class (I think its HO or OO Scale), but whoever released it they were absolutely up to date. At the time of my visit to the muzeum, the real Class 380 electrics were so new that they hadnt ventured out of the Ostrava area yet, although now they work some of the services into Praha Hlavni Nadrazi.

Nadrazi Luzna u Rakovnika
Title:  Nadrazi Luzna u Rakovnika
Description:  This is the station at Luzna. Until recently, it had a staffed ticket office, but now it has a skeleton crew. This cutback wasnt welcomed by the locals, of course, and a satirical obituary was left on the window of the office.

Nadrazi Rakovnik
Title:  Nadrazi Rakovnik
Description:  This was taken on the return trip to Prague, during the station stop at Rakovnik where #498.022 was turned. It had been gloomy and slightly rainy all day, but you can really see it on the window here. In fact, much of what Ive been showing you was damp at best, even if it doesnt look like it in the photos.

Model of NYC J1 Hudson in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Model of NYC J1 Hudson in the CD Muzeum
Description:  Im not sure whether to be surprised at finding this. If Im not mistaken, this isnt a Lionel 700E Hudson, but I could be mistaken. I mostly notice that it doesnt have the little bare metal whistle, so its probably from MTH or some other manufacturer. It did appear to be O Scale, though (unless my eyes were bad and it was S).

Old CSD Third-Class Coaches in the CD Muzeum

Red Star Disclaimer at the CD Muzeum
Title:  Red Star Disclaimer at the CD Muzeum
Description:  "Dear visitors, welcome! If you have accepted our invitation, then surely you understand our commitment to the faithful to the look of our exhibits. In the case of locomotives operated from the 1950s into the late 1970s, this includes equipment with red stars! This is to confirm to the historical reality of valid operational rules in these years prior to 1989. CD Muzeum Management, May 1st, 2004" Thats a rough translation, anyway. In the Czech Republic, the memory of the Communist regime is so negative that antique stores put tape and labels over red stars on any item that has them, just as they do with swastikas. In the rest of the world, the red star doesnt provoke quite the same reaction, even in countries where the Communist regimes were far more brutal, like Russia for example. Therefore, Im not sure how many other railway museums in ex-Communist countries would require disclaimers like this one.
