Of all of EMD's poor designs, including the BL2, I think this unfortunate notch in the short hood of 6595 for the hand brake is the winner. How difficult would it have been to put a piece of sheet metal in the front to complete the facade and protect the hand brake from the elements. This had to be one of those Friday afternoon designs where the draftsman was concerned about going home for the weekend and took shortcuts to complete the job. End of rant. |

Number 6606 was getting sand, and a portion of that sand is going to the ground. The BN had provided a funnel to prevent this sort of thing, but the funnel suffered from a fatal design flaw; in order for the funnel to work properly, one had to actually use the funnel. This meant climbing down off the locomotive, retrieving the funnel, climbing back on the locomotive with funnel in hand, and placing the funnel in the fill hatch. As seen, that step was skipped. I'll bet these guys were screwing with the new guy. |

Burlington Northern Railroad GP9 1958 at Springfield, Missouri on August 22, 1996, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. "This was the Vapor standby heater enclosure applied to most CB&Q GP7's and GP9's, in this case, ex-CB&Q GP9 273. Inside was a diesel fueled water heater. The exhaust stack, reboved by this date, was positioned against the car body to the roof line. Also removed was an electrical receptacle (where the circle is to the right of the lower latch). The ddea was to be able to shut down the diesel prime mover in cold weather and use the heater to heat and circulate the cooling water to prevent freezing. Two problems surfaced fram this idea; starting the prime mover was difficult with cold batteries, and the locomotive needed to be spotted near an electrical outlet. |

Burlington Northern Railroad C415 4010 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1980, Kmdachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1968 as SP&S 100 (c/n 6009-01), it was one of only two SP&S C415's, and the only two oo BN's roster as well. More C415's were orderec by the SP&S, but Alco ceased the locomotive building business before completing the order. This one was retired from the%BN in October 1980, so it is seen here in its first month#of retirement. |
