Viewing Album: The Lincoln Funeral Car
By:
Gary Everhart
Dates:
10/9/2015 - 10/10/2015
Album Info:
The replica of the Lincoln Funeral Car built by Mr. David Kloke stopped by the Indiana Welcome Center in Highland, IN, on October 8-11, 2015. This is it's last tour stop for 2015. The photos do not do justice to the detail work and research needed to complete this 5 year construction. The 4-4-0 Leviathan, also a Kloke project, heads up the funeral train much like a similar one did 150 years ago.

Title:
The Lincoln Funeral Car, "United States"
Description:
Since no exact records of the paint color existed for the original car, the 2015 Lincoln Funeral Train project enlisted the help of chemist Wayne Wesolowski of the University of Arizona in Tucson who was able to track down an original window still in existance in Minnesota. By chemically analyzing a small chip of paint, Weslowski was able to compare it to pigment records from 150 years ago and determine the correct shade of brown used. Just one more small detail that took the talents and efforts of others to help recreate this car.

The Lincoln Funeral Car, "United States"

A soldier stands guard next to the Lincoln Funeral Car as would have been during the original trip back to Springfield. This was another beautiful touch of history recreated for this car. Unfortunately I did not get the gentleman's name. Can someone identify him please?

Description:
Interesting bit of detail on the Leviathan, one of very few anachronisms obvious on the train. Note the latest date of March 31, 1898. Nevertheless, a beautiful detail item.
