Album Info:The C&NW leased 30 Norfolk & Western Alco C628's in February, 1973. They were pleased with the units and purchased all of them an few months later. At the time, the big Alco's were the heaviest units on the C&NW and were intended for system-wide mainline service. Two years later, the C628's replaced the aging Fairbanks-Morse H16-66's in ore service in Northern Michigan. The Alco's were well suited for these low-speed heavy ore trains and were finally replaced in October, 1990 with SD50's.
