Album Info:Here are ten original photos that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock just East of WYE Tower in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. What starts out looking like a just a bunch of rusting railroad cars is actually just about the first two: the two locomotive tenders. Before ending-up here on their way to the scrap dock, they once had been attached to steam locomotives and had pulled hundreds of freight trains and thousands of freight cars for many, many thousands of miles. And what's more, both of these tenders had "doghouses" ~ little cabins on the rear decks for the head-end brakemen. These photos give some idea of what the view and the experience were like for a head-end brakeman on a train heading out of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. The eleventh and last photo was taken by Otto C. Perry in Cleveland, Ohio, on 28 September 1930. It shows PRR I-1SA "Decapod" locomotive #4519. For more details on these and other PRR steam locomotives, see the Keystone Crossings Database: http://pennsyrr.com/kc/data/steam

PRR 4519, I-1SA Tender, 1966
Title:  PRR 4519, I-1SA Tender, 1966
Description:  Doghouse. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock just East of WYE Tower in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here are two PRR locomotive tenders, coupled to a long string of hopper cars. When the locomotives that they had been attached to were decommissioned and sent to the scrap dock, these tenders were spared for another ten years or so. But now, their temporary numbers have been lined through and the word "PENNSYLVANIA" has been removed from their sides ~ which means that they would soon be scrapped as well.

Description:  Doghouse. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock just East of WYE Tower in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here is the rear or trailing end of one of the tenders. Its builder's plate (visible just above the coupler) indicates that this is a Model 90-F-82 steam locomotive tender. The "4519" indicates that it was attached to PRR I-1SA "Decapod" (2-10-0) locomotive #4519.

Mr. Roger RadbillI suggests (in a personal communication) that "this most likely is the original tender from PRR 4519 1923 Baldwin Locomotive Works I1s c/n 56798 rebuilt to I1sa 4/43 and scrapped or sold 10/59."

PRR 4519, I-1SA Tender, 1966
Title:  PRR 4519, I-1SA Tender, 1966
Description:  Doghouse. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock just East of WYE Tower in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here is a closer view of the "Doghouse" on the second tender. The structure itself is made of metal and originally there was glass in the windows. The low-lying structures on both sides of the deck could be flipped open so that water could be poured into the tender's reservoir. The round thing on the right was a headlight so that the locomotive's crew could see in the dark while running backwards. Also visible are the signal bridge on the left and the Vipond Mansion on the right across US Route 22.

Title:  PRR 4519, I-1SA Tender, 1966
Description:  Doghouse. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock just East of WYE Tower in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here is what the head-end brakeman would have seen while sitting in the "Doghouse." You can almost feel the rockin' and rollin' as the train leaves Hollidaysburg on its way up the Allegheny Mountains ~ via the Muleshoe Curve ~ on its way to Gallitzin and points West! In this photo, the PRR's tracks occupy the original right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railway between Hollidaysburg and Duncansville.

Title:  PRR 4519, I-1SA Tender, 1966
Description:  Doghouse. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock just East of WYE Tower in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here is a right-side view of the "Doghouse" on the second tender. The steel rods around the window were to protect the head-end brakeman from tree branches and other objects when he leaned out to inspect the cars of the train behind him. PRR Hopper Car #191117 may have been a 70-ton capacity H-21A, built at the Altoona Car Shops around 1916. It was in line to be scrapped, too. Also visible is the clock tower of the Blair County Court House in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.

Title:  PRR 4519, I-1SA Tender, 1966
Description:  Doghouse. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock just East of WYE Tower in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here is the coal-bin of the first tender, as seen from the coal-bin of the second tender. This is what the locomotive engineer and fireman would see: Dutch doors on the coal-bin itself, and a channel in the floor for the coal to feed into the mechanical stoker. Until Federal rules were published in 1923, most steam locomotives were hand fired ~ up to 5,000 pounds of coal per hour!

Title:  PRR 4519, I-1SA, 1930
Description:  Doghouse. Here is an archival photo of PRR I-1SA "Decapod" (2-10-0) locomotive #4519 taken by Otto C. Perry in Cleveland, Ohio, on 28 September 1930. The tender attached to this engine is one of the two shown in this album. This photo is from the "Otto C. Perry Memorial Collection of Railroad Photographs" maintained by the Denver Public Library in Denver, Colorado. http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/ref/collection/p15330coll22/id/64070 Many thanks to Roger Radbill for locating this photo! Mr. Radbill also suggests that "this most likely is the original tender from PRR 4519 1923 Baldwin Locomotive Works I1s c/n 56798 rebuilt to I1sa 4/43 and scrapped or sold 10/59."
