East Altoona Ready Tracks, 1972
Description:
17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of Penn Central Railroad property in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 24 June 1972. Shown here are the locomotive ready tracks. Though once filled with waiting locomotives, steam and diesel alike, these tracks are now clogged with rusting rolling stock. By 1972, most freight trains did not stop in Altoona, so there was no more need for fresh crews and engines. The 8th Street Bridge and the Juniata Erecting & Machine Shop are also visible in the distance.
