Album Info:I photographed this depot in 1996. It has been repainted from green to gray. Interior photos taken through windows so quality is lower. In 1976 the depot was moved from its original location at North Wayne Street to the edge of Ambassador Park. The depot was busy 24 hours a day with six trains daily, three each direction. During World War II, local veterans and women would meet the troop trains at the depot every night. Soldiers traveling through would receive a good meal, cigarettes, coffee and soft drinks. This rail line was built by the Indianapolis & Sandusky Railroad, a subsidiary of Lake Erie & Louisville Railroad, connecting Celina and Muncie, 53.78 miles. Construction was started in early summer of 1879. By October track had been laid between Celina and Ft. Recovery, 15 miles. Tracklayers started working from Muncie and just before Christmas the two met at Portland, IN - 11 miles west of Ft. Recovery. Regular trains started between Muncie and Celina in the latter part of May 1880. Lake Erie & Western was formed on August 4, 1879 by consolidating Lake Erie & Louisville and its subsidiary Indianapolis & Sandusky with other properties.
