C1885 shortly after the P&O went into service. Sure doesn't look like it could hold itself up, let alone a locomotive & train. /DL |

Timetable west at the Notch |
Description: |
C1875. This scene is at Crawford Notch about the time the MEC leased the line from the P&O. RLHS RR History #152 says this part of the P&O began operation in August 1875 and was leased to MEC 3 years later to eventually become the Mountain Division. I suspect the dirt road was not listed as U.S. Rt 302 on maps at that time.... /DL |

Crawford Station |
Description: |
July 1896 Engine 139 at Crawford Station. The Reading Dispatch boxcar on the siding in the background is a nice touch as well. If I read the back ground properly the train is headed west. There’s a velocipede on the platform and it looks like some of the passengers are looking under the deck, perhaps someone’s cat has taken a hike... ? #139 built by the Rhode Island Works in 1891 was scrapped in June of 1914. Cyl 19x26 with 56 /1/2 inch drivers. Builders # 2616 according to RR History #152. /DL |

Looking East |
Description: |
C1890? Looking down grade from near the Notch. No date, location or photographer info on the back of the print, however the scene is clearly looking east bound from the area of Crawfords Notch. At MP P84.7 near the Notch the altitude is 1880 feet. Bartlet at MP P70.5 the height is about 670 feet. That’s 1200 feet in about 14 miles. Those old B&M 2-6-6-2s sure had their work cut out for them.. /DL |

MEC 1204 |
Description: |
MEC had four of these 2-6-6-2s. I understand they were bought for helper service on the mountain division but did work elsewhere on the MEC, most likely between Portland and Waterville. It looks like the photographer was on a flat car for this scene. Originally from the Allen collection. Built by Alco at Schnectady it was formally B&M #1294 (renumbered to B&M 3003) built in November of 1910 and scrapped November of 1929. Builders number 48651. No date with this photo. /DL |

MEC 361 on the table |
Description: |
Here is MEC#361 on the turntable at St.Johnsbury apparently after a run over the Mountain Division, or at least the west end of it. It looks like he is headed into the barn for service. I hope there is enough heat to melt all the ice and snow off before the shop crew go to work. A 4-6-0 class -O- #361 was built by Alco-S in Sept 1905 and was scrapped in May of 1948. No date or photographer info with this photo. /DL |
