Note the Train Number '2' is displayed hanging in;front of the head lamp. In the 1890 to 1905 era MEC had two #34s and two #73s. I drove to Vanceboro a few years ago. All this is gone now. MEC sold out to CP }ears ago and the main track with 2 sidings is now operated by Eastern Maine RR. Other photos show a hotel large station and freight house along with numerious other uildings. /DL |

This PostCard scene is postmarked October 6 1910. This is an interesting scene looking west from the water tank at the east end of the yard near the Mattawamkeag River Bridge. The Canadian Pacific track to Brownville Jct is on the right with the interchange yard with MEC to the left. The Depot Street crossing, apparently not cleared of snow in this scene, is between the passenger platform and the freight house. A search in this archive of Mattawamkeag photos will give perspective from the other end of the yard. There is a crossing in the distance for today’s US Rt2 which doesn’t show up in this perspective. Steam power certainly gives the snow a rather dirty look. /DL. |

C1915. This old post card is postmarked August 31 1917 and originated in Exeter NH. This scene looking west down the yard shows a couple of CP box cars on the left and a scale house in the distance. The station just to the right of the main line with a 5 or 6 bay round house. The box car spotted at the freight house shows D&HO or D&HC 19977 on the origional print. C2010 all this is gone, one main line track with a passing siding are all that remain. The line is operated by the Eastern Maine Railway. The St. Croix River & Canadian boarder is just a few hundred feet behind the camera. /DL |

Type 2-8-2 Mattawamkeag Me December 1938“ If I am properly indexed to the water tank and freight house, the train is westbound with the locomotive having just crossed over the Mattawamkeag River. The train will drift to the left and down the old E&NA ROW towards Bangor along the Penobscot River. If this were a Canadian Pacific train it would head straight cross the Penobscot and move west towards Brownville and western Maine. MEC 613 a Class S locomotive running 180 lbs built by Aldo in December 1916. Sold in March 1951. Cyl 26.5x30 with 63 inch drivers. /DL |

Tie Plate Job Greenbush to Enfield |

In reviewing one of my Maine Central eBay acquisitions from years ago I came across this page. It is from a 3 ring binder with hand written notes from a track/MOW supervisor on a number of subjects. This page was of particular interest covering a 9 day period in October of 1946. It follows the manpower distribution across the assigned job categories for a 60 man track gang replacing tie plates over an 11 mile section of RR a few miles east of Bangor. They did about a mile a day. Back in these days I imagine they spent their nights on a work train parked on the Enfield Branch. It certainly would be interesting to see a crew like that in action today. I expect there was something like a dozen trains a day over that line in those days so the two flaggers were kept busy... Originally this track was part of the European and North American RR. It was built to 56" in 1871. It was leased to the MEC in 1882 and converted to standard gauge. It was later bought by the MEC and today is part of Pan Am. /DL |

B&ML Road Master, Bob Gillam once told me that The MEC used to lube the rail joints so there would be plenty of give to alleviate stress. This graphic is taken from a 100 page track notebook covering MEC’s main line east of Orono in the 1940s & 1950s. In particular note the last two items, Joints and Lub Oil used... I’ve never seen this put in practice, even as I grew up on the Bucksport Branch in the 50s. Switches used to get a lot of attention but I don’t ever recall any oil applied to rail joints... /DL |
