It depicts the "Broadway Limited" passing over the Susquehanna River via the Rockville Bridge a few miles north of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Prominent here is PRR engine #5357, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during March of 1924 and retired in February of 1949 after 25 years of faithful service. |

Herein begins the section called "Behind the Scenes." As for the photo, this would seem to be the engineman's window in the cab of a DD-1 electric locomotive. Permanently-coupled pairs of DD-1's pulled the freshly-replenished "Broadway" out of Sunnyside Yard, through the East River Tunnels, waited for the passengers to load at New York City's Pennsylvania Station, pulled the "Limited" through the West River Tunnels, and finally uncoupled at Manhattan Transfer ~ i.e., present-day Harrison, New Jersey, just East of Newark. Steam locomotives would then pull the "Broadway Limited" the balance of the way to Chicago. |
