"When business soared 16 per cent Pennsy disturbed the slumber of long-stored steam power, turned a dieselized division upside down, and coined a new word." (Page 42)

Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1656 is an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during January of 1917 and retired in November of 1956 after 39 years of faithful service.

Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6898 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during October of 1926 and retired in December of 1955 after 29 years of faithful service. Also included are an unidentified German reporter's reflections about riding the "California Zephyr."
