Aerotrain. Here is a photo via Bob Lorenz that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1956. Shown here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Aerotrain," built by General Motors during July of 1955. After changing both engine and train crews, it will soon depart for Johnstown as part of its daily sojourn from New York City to Pittsburgh and back. Shown here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Aerotrain," built by General Motors during July of 1955. After departing Pittsburgh and crossing the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve, it has stopped at the Altoona Passenger Station for a crew change and to discharge/board passengers. Soon, it will pass under the 12th Street Footbridge on its way to Philadelphia and New York City. Note the headlight of the waiting helper engine in the distance.
