FSF. Here is a photo by Thomas Lynam that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in February of 1949. It was published originally in Mr. Robert L. Emerson's 1984 book entitled "Allegheny Passage: An Illustrated History Of Blair County," page 75. Photo Caption: "The sight of clouds billowing out of a passing steam engine vanished shortly after these two photos were made, as the newer diesel engine edged its older sister out of commission. Both the J-1a steam engine (top) and the EMD diesels (not shown) ~ nicknamed 'covered wagons' ~ were photographed in Altoona's Pennsy yard in 1949." This vest-pocket coaling tipple was located just West of the 4th Street Footbridge.

FSF. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in September of 1959. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5847 and two more "EP" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5847 is an EP-20 built during August of 1947, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in June of 1964 after just 17 years of revenue service. They are about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge with a passenger train, and will soon stop at the Altoona Station on their way to Pittsburgh and points West.

FSF. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in September of 1959. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5865 and two more "EP" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5865 is an EP-20 built during February of 1948 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge with a mail and express train on their way to Harrisburg and points East. Just behind them are the crew-change building and the water tank, both of which saw service during the good ol' days when steam locomotives were marshaled here to push freights up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the summit at Gallitzin.

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5803 and two more "EP" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5803 is an EP-22 built during July of 1952 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge with a nine-car passenger train on their way to Harrisburg and points East. Just behind them are the crew-change building and the water tank, both of which saw service during the good ol' days when steam locomotives were marshaled here to push freights up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the summit at Gallitzin.

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #7141 and three more "Geeps" whose road numbers are not recorded. All are EFS-17M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7141 was constructed in June of 1957. In this context, they're about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge and enter the Eastbound Receiving Yard with a fully-loaded mineral train fresh from the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania.

Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9623 was constructed in November of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in January of 1967 after just 16 years of revenue service. They are about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge with a mixed-cargo freight train that is heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Also visible on the left are some of the PRR's Altoona Passenger Car Shops that border Chestnut Avenue for more than a mile!

At center-right are PRR engine #2213 and three more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #2213 is an EF-22 built in March of 1963 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. Both trains have changed engine and train crews, and await movement orders to proceed up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. FSF. Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken from the 4th Street Footbridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in August of 1977. Notable in the center of the photo is Conrail engine #6232, an SD45 built by GM-EMD as Pennsylvania Railroad number "6232" in January of 1968, rated at 3,600 horsepower, and owned successively by the Penn Central and Conrail under its original road number.
