Text Excerpt: "The first contract was let for the portion of the road between Johnstown and the summit of Allegheny Mountain on May 25, 1831. The contract for work between the summit and Hollidaysburg was awarded July 29th of the same year. The first single track was completed and open for traffic March 18, 1834. The second track was finished in late spring of 1835."
