Description:
A CN through freight crosses the mouth of the Fox River via the 2013 CN bascule bridge at Oshkosh, WI, on 21 Mar. '21. This bridge was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the former 1899 C&NW swing bridge, in part to widen the navigation channel.

CN 5778 and CN 2191
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Harrison St. as it heads northeast at the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 24 Mar. '21. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a spur, runs parallel on the other side of the train. The facility partially visible in the background at the right is Amcor Flexibles Neenah (formerly Bemis until Jun. '19, formerly Curwood, Inc.), 1815 Marathon Ave.

GTW 4930
Description:
GTW 4930 crosses S. Mason St. while headed southwest via CN, former C&NW, rails at Appleton, WI, on 25 Mar. '21. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I have discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. You can also see that the bridge abutments and piers were designed to support two tracks, but I don't believe this area was ever double-tracked.

GTW 5825 and GTW 4616
Description:
GTW 5825 and GTW 4616 rest at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Mar. '21. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994; it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

UP 6779 and BNSF 7992
Description:
A through freight parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 27 Mar. '21. The train is transitioning to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. To the right, a shiny, new, modern signal relay case stands where an awesome, old one once stood. To the right of that you can see some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. '20 and was completed ca. 3 Jul. '20. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug. '21. The telephone pole to the left of center and the one to the left of the lead locomotive stand next to an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

GTW 4930
Description:
A CN local crosses S. Outagamie St. and approaches W. Prospect Ave. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 31 Mar. '21. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks with 13 cars. This intersection of W. Prospect Ave., S. Outagamie St., and W. Haskel St. was recently reconstructed (and reconfigured), as part of the much needed reconstruction of W. Prospect Ave. from the tracks to S. Seminole Rd. This portion of W. Prospect Ave., from S. Mason St. westward, used to be named Carver St. The portion of W. Prospect Ave. from S. Mason St. to S. State St. was W. 2nd St. Prospect originally only ran from S. State St. to what is currently the intersection with S. Appleton St./S. Oneida St.

CN 2255
Description:
A CN container train parallels Harrison St. and approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 3 Apr. '21. Train had two sequentially numbered locomotives, CN 2255 pulling and CN 2256 mid-train. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, runs parallel along the other side of the train. A pair of facilities owned by Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (WSI), both originally Kampo warehouses, stand in the background. Both have spurs for rail service, but the turnout connecting them to the passing siding was removed quite a while ago. The one on the left (north) is at 2240 Harrison St., covers 176,000 sq. ft., with 16'-10" high walls, 22 truck doors, 2 ground-level doors. The one on the right (south) is at 555 W. Bell St., Neenah, WI, and covers 97,000 sq. ft., with 24' high walls, 10 truck doors, 1 ground-level door.

Remnants of a BNSF 3-bay Covered Hopper

The pitiful remnants of a BNSF 3-bay covered hopper at the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 10 Apr. '21. I have to wonder why it was in the process of being cut up here. ELS 502
Description:
An E&LS train passes Veterans Park and crosses the Little Peshtigo River via a 1902 masonry/concrete arch bridge as it heads north with 18 cars via former MILW rails at Coleman, WI, on 23 Apr. '21. The locals have affixed a plaque claiming this to be the "Joseph Brault Memorial Bridge 1824-1887." Joseph Urgel Brault is considered, by some, to be the founder of the Village of Coleman, WI, in 1870, but doesn't appear to have had anything to do with this bridge specifically or the railroad in general. Some references claim that the village was originally named Braultville and later changed to Coleman. Others claim that it has always been Coleman, named for a man who owned a lot of the land. Another reference asserts that Coleman and the neighboring village of Pound were named for US Representative Thaddeus Coleman Pound. He served on a committee which considered railroad land grants. One reference claims August Beaudry "to be the real founder of [Coleman]." He built a boarding house/store/saloon near the railroad right-of-way ca. 1881 as the M&N approached what is now Coleman. The original Brault settlement was about 2 miles east of Coleman, where Hwy. B crosses the Little Peshtigo River. Referred to as Braultville (some references claim officially, others unofficially), it has also been referred to as East Coleman. A small community sprouted up near this bridge site in 1880, around the Waldron Dickinson Co. (later Marshall Holmes Co., later E. E. Bolles Co.) sawmill (which stood behind me on the opposite side of Bus. 141). The community was referred to as Little River, but is now part of Coleman. The railroad construction camp was located near this site. The Marshall Spur connected the sawmill to the M&N main line. The sawmill closed in 1911 after the local timber supply was exhausted.
