Goldstein | Dates: | 2/23/2022 - 2/23/2022 | Album Info: | I'm sitting here minding my own business (it's sleeting and below freezing as this takes place) when I here one of the Flynn firemen call the Leon County Sheriff Office dispatch to have them contact BNSF because a couple of crossing panels were dislodged from the crossing next to my house.
Now, I knew the northbound Teague local was waiting on the siding for the sb Englewood, and hadn't gone over the crossing the yet - why isn't the train crew calling it in?
I pop my head out the front door and sure enough, there is a fire truck and two vollies milling around.. I grab my phone and my scanner; and start heading for the crossing - it's only 300 feet from my door..
As I'm walking out the door - the Englewood clears the 173.5 Defect Detector after some brake issues, so it's on the move and within 3 miles - heading our way! As I'm dialing the direct number to the BNSF dispatcher to get that train stopped - up pulls my local track inspector.
He looks at me, says hello, then looks at the crossing and says "Uh oh - this don't look good"; and I tell him the Englewood just cleared the detector. He looks at me a little surprised, (I guess he didn't hear it on the truck radio), because he just dashed for the truck and called the train direct on the radio to stop before they get to the crossing; which after they were safely able to do in time and way before the crossing..
About 15 minutes later, NOW the BNSF dispatcher calls the Teague Local crew, and begins to inquire if there is any activity at the crossing in Flynn? To wit, they reply, "Yeah, a high and wide low boy came through, bottomed out on the crossing, manage to free itself and clear the intersection."
The dispatch replies, "Well, he just got a call that the crossing panels were damaged - don't move their train". The dispatcher then called the Englewood on the radio, and they cut him off and say, "yup, we've already stopped before the crossing - track inspector called us on the radio.."
