NYC 4-8-2 #3001 - New York Central |
Description: |
An unknown railfan took this photo of the very fortunate 4-8-2 Mohawk, NYC #3001, which is one of only two surviving NYC 4-8-2's left. It's history is interesting. Built by ALCo-Schenectady in October of 1940 (serial #69338), it served the New York Central as a powerful addition to their roster for nearly 17 years before being sold to Texas & Pacific in March of 1957 who renumbered it T&P #909 and put it on display at the Dallas fairgrounds. The loco passed through the hands of the city of Dallas and then the Museum of American RRs in Dallas. It was part of a trade for GG1 #4903, it landed in Elkhart with the Lakeshore RR Historical Foundation. For a short time it was even borrowed by a power plant to use as a stationary steam generator. Finally it was donated to the National NYC RR Museum in Elkhart, IN. where it is on static display. |

NYC 4-8-2 #3001 - New York Central |
Description: |
Nice shot of the 69" drivers on New York Central 4-8-2 #3001 by an unknown railfan while on a visit to the National NYC RR Museum in Elkhart, Indiana. The NYC called these 4-8-2 giants "Mohawks" rather than the conventional "Mountain" wheel configuration as they thought it inappropriate for a "Mountain" loco to be pulling their advertised "Water Level Route" trains. |

NYC 4-8-2 #3001 - New York Central |
Description: |
At one time, there was discussion about restoring NYC 4-8-2 #3001 to active service. It is one of only two surviving NYC 4-8-2's left with the other one in the National Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, MO, near St Louis, MO. Haven't heard any updates in a long time. Does anyone know if the plans are still active about restoring this beauty??? |
