CSX 7232 |
Description: |
Reports of replacements vaders quickly popping up to the locations where Conrail Era Trilight signals were guarding the rails between Sidney and Quincy, OH on the CSX Indy Line had me scrambling to find a day to go get my last shots of them before they all came down. Finally, I found a free Monday and took the time to go south to get as many shots as I could of trains passing the signals before their untimely demise. I knew in order to get as much traffic as I could moving I would have to start the day early, as long lulls on the Indy Line are quite common these days. I quick hopped on US 33 and once reaching I75 I made a "B-Line" (haha, get it? Cause Conrail called this the B-Line, meh, never mind) toward Sidney. While coming into Sidney, CSX M364 was slowly working their way east through town, I was well behind the train, but thankfully the train was well over 200 cars long, which gave me a pretty good shot to get to Quincy and grab it passing the eastbound facing pair of signals there. The sun still wasnt up, but I definitely knew I needed to make due. |

Following right behind M364 was CSX C895. I moved down to my favorite pair of intermediates just east of Pemberton to grab this one. |

Coal trains can be hit or miss with DPU along this line. CSX C895 happened to be a "hit" moment. With the train running on yellow signals behind M364, I was able to get back to Quincy to grab the train passing the westbound facing signals guarding CP 153 with the IORY. |

CSX 4565 |
Description: |
After C895 passed, one of the very classic "lull periods" hit, and I went about 2 hours without a train. Finally, scratches of life came over the scanner. I moved down to the QI 159 intermediates outside of Pasco, which already had replacements sitting just to the right of where the trilights stood. All that needed to be completed now was the new signals to be put up and cut over on the new wiring and box. These definitely appeared that they would be the first to go. Soon, CSX M363 came out clearly over the radio, and I was quite pleased to hear the welcoming sound of an EMD turbo charging my direction. A rebuild CSX SD70MAC is the sole leader on todays M363 |

I knew that CSX I008 was very nearby as well, as I was beginning to hear them over the radio as well. So I moved to the other side of the signals to get it passing them as well. Little did I know, but M363 also had a rear DPU unit, which I managed to see and get photos of at the last second. |

CN 3177 |
Description: |
Chirps from CSX I131 were also coming over the radio, which was a little concerning, as I had a feeling that I would not be able to move toward the last pair of signals that I needed to grab at the interlocking with the Toledo Sub at Sidney. With determination (and speed), I did manage to make it into Sidney to get the train crossing over the Toledo Sub at CP 163. The westbound facing signals are attached to a much newer cantilever, which do sort of break the authenticity, but theyre still trilights, and not vaders, and thats what matters. Todays I131 features a Canadian Guest on the head end, something that is rare for this train, and just rare for the Indy Line in general. |

IORY 3222 |
Description: |
The LSL received a warrant south toward Tremont City a little earlier today than they usually would due to a NS grain train loading at Uniopolis, and I knew that I didnt have anymore CSX traffic nearby. I wasnt sure if the IORY signals were going to come down in the replacement process, but I figured I might as well not take my chances. Just after noon, the LSL came rolling south across the Big 4, sporting an orange unit, 2 leased SD60Ms, and a leased SD50. Believe it or not but the orange power leading these trains have become sort of a rarity since the SD60Ms came this far north on the system. It was almost welcoming. |

CSX 3318 |
Description: |
CSX M217 was pulling up to CP 153 as the LSL was going across, so I decided to move back down to QI 155 east of Pemberton to get one final shot of these signals for the last time. Just like 159, these are running off the new wiring and the new box, but the new signals have not shown up here yet. My guess is it will only take a matter of days now. Its a real shame to see this pair go, as it was definitely my favorite in the stretch between Sidney and Quincy. Farewell old friends! |

CSX M332 was coming up over the radio after M217, so I moved back to Quincy to grab one final train through CP 153 for probably the last time ever. This stretch of track isnt exactly the most interesting on the Indy Line, so without the signals I wont really have a reason to watch trains in this area. Definitely will be weird to see them gone, but I am glad I was able to document them one final time before they all fall. Godspeed Trilights. |

CSX L424 on the Toledo Sub had a YN3 SD40-3 leader today, which I knew would look good by some CPLs. Went to Swanders to check the bracket and it was lit green, so I went down the access road to catch my approaching northbound. Sure enough, it was L424 with the SD40-3 leader. |

Things were extremely quiet after L424, and I managed to get all the way to Lima before I began hearing peeps from another train. That other train happened to be L318 returning from the north. I decided to go down to the north end Robb Yard Cantilever for the first time to nab this one. Unfortunately I didnt get there quite as quick as I would have liked, and I had freight cars in the way, but I made due. |

The sun was beginning to set, and the traffic was less than busy, so I decided it was time to think about heading home. In order to get home, I usually take OH 309 to US 30, which takes me right beside CFEs Cole Street Yard. I happened to find the Tunnel Motor sitting all by itself just west of the overpass. Not sure why its smoking this much oil. I dont think engines are supposed to do that. |
