Pantograph
Title:  Pantograph
Description:  This one was taken in Amsterdam Centraal in 1998 (in spite of the copyright date), and because of its relative abstraction I've posted it here. I shot it with either Kodak Tri-X or Ilford Delta 400 (I don't remember which), and then I cranked up the contrast after scanning it. In the original prints, I eventually did the same with filters, but the print I scanned was kind of soupy.

Budapest Funicular Railway
Title:  Budapest Funicular Railway
Description:  The Budapest Funicular Railway is very short, as its only purpose is to help lazy people get to the Royal Castle. It nevertheless provides an interesting contrast to the Prague Funicular, as it has two tracks, with no need for a passing siding.

Budapest Keleti Trainshed
Title:  Budapest Keleti Trainshed
Description:  Like many big city stations around the world, Keleti is large and monumental, and has a large arched ceiling over the main concourse. It's a beautiful station, underneath all the grime, and the only thing that I dislike about it is that it doesn't appear to have central heating, or at least none which is particularly effective. As a result, I was freezing when I took this.

MAV 1361 In Budapest Keleti
Title:  MAV 1361 In Budapest Keleti
Description:  #1361 is a V43 Class electric, which are quite common on services in and out of Keleti, even if they are indeed quite old at this point. Note that this photo has been retouched, if it looks weird.

OBB 1116005-8 At Budapest Keleti
Title:  OBB 1116005-8 At Budapest Keleti
Description:  Most European railway stations, at least in major cities, host trains from several different countries, and Budapest Keleti is no exception. This locomotive, a Kraus-Maffei/Seimens 1116 Class electric, works for the Austrian OBB.

Rusian Sleeper Train In Budapest Keleti
Title:  Rusian Sleeper Train In Budapest Keleti
Description:  I noticed that this sleeper train was Russian, although I forget the destination. I think it was Petrograd (St. Petersburg), but I'm not certain. In any case, it's being pulled by a MAV (Hungarian State Railways) Class V63 electric here, which gives it a greater degree of exoticism, although really it's totally normal for sleeper trains to be pulled by the motive power of the railway on which they're running at a given moment. If you can read it in this picture, notice Russian Kryllic lettering and RZD reporting marks on the sleeper.

Steam Heat In Budapest Keleti
Title:  Steam Heat In Budapest Keleti
Description:  I took this just because I liked the steam-era look, with what looked like steam heating pipes (for pre-heating trains) leaking steam into the freezing cold air. If I'm wrong on this point, though, please somebody tell me. I don't really know what else it could be.

2nd Generation Thalys High Speed Trains In Bruxelles-Midi
Title:  2nd Generation Thalys High Speed Trains In Bruxelles-Midi
Description:  Here's a shot of some of the 2nd-generation Thalys trainsets, which have TGV Duplex (3rd Generation TGV) power units (locomotives). The coaching stock is more or less 2nd Generation single-level TGV, though, not Duplex. I like the old ones better. :-)

Thalys In Bruxelles-Midi
Title:  Thalys In Bruxelles-Midi
Description:  This is a Thalys TGV high-speed train, essentially a 2nd Generation SNCF TGV, but with multi-current capability for operating into Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. As with other international European trains, the Thalys is operated by a crew from the country it is currently in, switching at the border. These are used a lot by American tourists, at least if they've still heard of train travel, because they offer a faster form of international transport than the plane or the car. Also, if you have a Eurail pass (I didn't), it's often cheaper than flying, although a surcharge is added because the Thalys is, indeed, a true high speed train capable of running at 300Km/h (186 m.p.h.). This one looks to have its coupler exposed for running with another set, although I didn't see the other set around.

RZD 00102285 In Berlin Hbf
Title:  RZD 00102285 In Berlin Hbf
Description:  Wagons-Lits are better known for providing sleepers and other luxury passenger equipment for the Orient Express, but indeed they do provide a full sleeper service to many carriers. RZD, the Russian Railway, is a major customer, and their sleeper trains, equipped with Wagons-Lits stock, connect Moscow and St. Petersburg to many Eastern and Central European cities such as Prague, Budapest, Karlovy Vary, and of course Berlin, seen here.

Kobenhavns Hovedbanegard Station
Title:  Kobenhavns Hovedbanegard Station
Description:  Also known as Copenhagen H, or Kobenhavn H, for short, this is the main rail station for Copenhagen, and is the largest in Denmark. It was built in 1911 to replace an earlier station from 1864, which had replaced the original station from 1847.

Bridge to Malmo
Title:  Bridge to Malmo
Description:  The rail and road bridge over the Baltic Sea between Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmo, Sweden, is supposedly the longest in Europe, or so I'm told. In this situation, I was taking advantage of unexpected extra time on my Copenhagen trip to add another country to my list of places visited. I do plan to go back eventually, though, to see Stockholm and Goteburg.

Malmo Station
Title:  Malmo Station
Description:  Amtrak, in the national passenger service in the U.S., once tested a train very similar to these called the "Big Kiss," although the experiment didn't result in any serious use in the U.S. DSB have a sizeable fleet of trains like these, and a number of them even work international services, like these.

Ticket Machine, Faxe Ladeplads Station
Title:  Ticket Machine, Faxe Ladeplads Station
Description:  This is one of the many ticket machine designs that I've seen in Europe, with this one having a map to indicate where each station is. If you want such and such a station, you obviously pick your fare by clicking on the appropriate station button. Regrettably, I noticed that a line seemed to have been abandoned since this machine was installed.

Tram Tracks
Title:  Tram Tracks
Description:  I was a bit surprised to see this tram tracks just tucked away in an out of the way neighborhood adjoining Malmohus castle. I'm not aware of whether they're part of a limited tram system, a local industrial railway, or a tram museum, but in any case they're quite interesting, I think.

X2000 Tilt Train In Malmo Station
Title:  X2000 Tilt Train In Malmo Station
Description:  Amtrak also tested the X2000 tilt train, and everybody agrees that it was the inspiration for the Acela Express which came about eight years later. The Acela Express, while it still runs today, has been a technical disaster from the start, as nearly all of the engineering lessons gleaned from the X2000 testing were ignored. The X2000, however, is superb, and one of my regrets this trip was that I didn't get a chance to ride it.

OBB 1216237 in Nadrazi Holesovice
Title:  OBB 1216237 in Nadrazi Holesovice
Description:  My first international trip after getting back to Prague was to Dresden, which meant that I departed from Nadrazi Holesovice. Since the Schengen agreement took effect, my sense is that the various European railways have been less hesitant to allow their locomotives to operate across international borders, as these Austrian OBB Class 1216 electrics have been turning up in Holesovice quite a bit lately.
