L&N CNX |
Description: |
On the Sunday before Christmas 1964 Louisville & Nashville EXTRA 661 SOUTH was entering the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal EASTERN CONNECTION at East City Junction. For many years the L&N operated southbound CNX - and northbound NCX - mail and express extras between Cincinnati and New Orleans during the Christmas Season. These trains were typically 15-20 cars long and ran with a caboose. The tracks on the left belonged to the Southern Railway's New Orleans Terminal Co., and that was East City Tower on the extreme left. The train was four miles from its destination at NOUPT, and the photo was taken with a plastic Kodak STARMETER camera. |

L&N GP30 1045 was passing under the Galvez Street Overpass on a transfer run from the railroad's Gentilly Yard to Julia Street Yard and the MP. In the foregound was Montegut Street, while the Southern Railway's Oliver Yard was on the other side of the L&N's track. This L&N line was built in the early 1950's as a part of the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal Project, to provide it with continued access to its trackage along the Mississippi River while allowing it to remove its line on the median of Elysian Fields Avenue. One of the L&N's successors, either the Seaboard System or the CSX, abandoned this line in the 1980's |

In 1974 the L&N eliminated the yellow nose from its paint scheme, adopting the rather austere appearance modeled by the first two units on this run-through train from the SP to the L&N. One-month-old U23B 2800 arrived from the GE factory looking like this, while GP30 1052 had been recently repainted into this scheme. The other locomotives are U23B 2700 (ex-Monon 601) and GP30 1040. Seaboard System New Orleans-Birmingham train No. 470 crosses the Rigolets Drawbridge, 26 miles east of Gentilly Yard in New Orleans. The Rigolets is a pass which connects Lake Pontchartrain -- off to the right -- with the Gulf of Mexico on the left, and the New Orleans city limit is on the far shore. The slide was taken through the windshield of a helicopter, which explains the poor quality of the image. |
