Reflections in the Rearview Mirror
Title:  Reflections in the Rearview Mirror
Description:  Amtrak Train #763 leaves the station at Fullerton California enroute to Los Angeles. This is a shot I have done countless times in the evening and at night, however I was curious to see what it would look like in the morning with the sun low on the horizon (Winter). I was amazed at how much light was reflected back to the side of the train from the building to the right which was the old Donald Duck juice plant. If you look closely, you can see the reflected image of the engineer in the rear view mirror.

Protecting the Shove on AT&SF #999795
Title:  Protecting the Shove on AT&SF #999795
Description:  The Crew of the La Mirada Local protects the shove from former Santa Fe Caboose #999795 that is now used as a "Shoving Platform" which in railroad parlance is a place fov the train crew to stand and watch while the train makes reverse movements such as this one on the Kimberly lead in Fullerton California. The "999" was added to the car number by the Santa Fe when computerized car tracking was starteg in the 1970s to differentiate the waycar as a non-revenue generating freight car. It seems #999795 has been used on the La Mirada locals since at least 2005 and was probably around Los Angeles before that. This caboose was built in August 1981 by Inkernational Car Company, and was one of 75 class Ce-11 cabooses on Santa Fe, the last new cabooses acquired by the railroad. More information about Santa Fe cabooses may be found at: atsf.railfan.net/waycars/ce11.html Thanks to Evan Werkema for the history on CE 11s.

Watchin a Friend
Title:  Watchin a Friend
Description:  Here I watch a friend of mine who sometimes works the Southwest Chief on the Los Angeles to Kingman AZ turn, help a passenger who is boarding Train #4 on this night from Fullerton. On this balmy Spring evening in Southern California the weather was warm and everybody at the station seemed happy that the Winter cold was at last behind us.

One Hand on the Throttle and One on the Brake
Title:  One Hand on the Throttle and One on the Brake
Description:  The engineer of Amtrak Train 785 from San Diego, pulls out of the station at Fullerton on the way to Los Angeles with Cabcar #6904 in the lead. While I am not a big fan of the "cabcar" since they lack the smooth lines and obvious presence of a proper railroad engine, they are however quite common nowadays and the utility of a commuter train that can be operated in push mode is self evident.

Kickin up Dust
Title:  Kickin up Dust
Description:  Metrolink Engine #888 hammers into Fullerton California with Train #608 on a Tuesday evening in early August to disgorge it's tired and well traveled commuters who work in downtown Los Angeles. I am always amazed at how by the end of the week on Friday, these poor people have all taken on the look of walking zombies as they get off the train at the depot on their way home for a weekend of rest - then on Monday, they do it all over again.

A Dogs Eye View - Another View
Title:  A Dogs Eye View - Another View
Description:  My Railfaning companion watches intently as the Amtrak crew loads the Eastbound Southwest Chief. As the train releases its brakes and starts to pull away, that is the signal to my K9 companion to bark loudly and then brake into a run in a futile attempt to run down the train. So far she has not caught it, but dogs are eternal optimists and everyday is viewed by this animal as yet another chance to catch that train.

Station Stop Under an Autumn Moon for the Eastbound Southwest Chief at Fullerton California
Title:  Station Stop Under an Autumn Moon for the Eastbound Southwest Chief at Fullerton California
Description:  Amtrak Train No. 4 sits in the station at Fullerton California on an Autumn evening in October with a clear line up ahead. Nighttime arrivals of the Southwest Chief in Autumn always signal the end of those halcyon days of Summer and serve as a reminder of the long cold Winter nights to come. Sunlit arrivals of this train wont appear again at Fullerton until the Spring of next year near the end of April.

One Pulls Another
Title:  One Pulls Another
Description:  Amtrak Trains 583 and 577 were apparently combined at some point on the route between San Diego and Los Angeles. Both engines seemed to be running as the train pulled into Fullerton California on this warm Sunday evening in October, but there are many other reasons why one train would need to be hooked onto the other including faulty brakes, a blown air compressor and/or the generator that provides electricity to the cars could have malfunctioned.

Morning at Highland Avenue
Title:  Morning at Highland Avenue
Description:  Seems a number of my favorite railroad images captured at the station in Fullerton feature the intermediate signals located 3/10s of a mile West of the train station at Highland Avenue in Fullerton California . On this day, I sought to include some type of self inclusive reference to Highland Avenue in the photo - the street sign in the lower left hand quadrant or the image. Here, Amtrak Train #566 from Los Angeles enroute to San Diego approaches the station at Fullerton on a warm morning in November.

At Least Timmy is Watching for Trains
Title:  At Least Timmy is Watching for Trains
Description:  What can I say, the scene speaks for itself, it is just another Friday night at the train station in Fullerton. Really though, the situation was not as critical as it seems from the picture. If a person were to know how to read the signals including the ones behind me about 1/4 of a mile down the track out of the frame, they would know that the oncoming freight train was going to diverge onto Main #3 which is the track to right of the stopped Eastbound train. Course ones safety while playing on the railroad tracks all relative, since the Eastbound Southwest Chief was due to arrive at any moment on the track in the foreground that the children are standing on. After the proposed sequel to the June 1, 2008, trip to San Diego was canceled in May of 2009, due to low ticket sales and the apparent recession, it was nice to see 3751 back out on the high iron of the former AT&SF Surfline as it made its way South toward San Diego after rolling through Fullerton Junction.

The Santa Ana Trainmaster
Title:  The Santa Ana Trainmaster
Description:  Train Master Bruce is an individual that can be found at the train station in Fullerton California on a weekly basis. He is well known by all the L.A. to San Diego Amtrak train crews and allegedly did a turn to Kingman and back on the Chief when he got stuck on the train by mistake - or not, depending on who you talk to. From what I have observed, Bruce rides back and forth between Fullerton and Los Angeles as his whim demands and he always travels business class because that is where the coffee and pastries are available. Some famous quotes attributable to Bruce and heard around Fullerton are: (1) "Izze at Basta yet?" (2) "He's at Highland now" or "Highland now!" (3) "Hey Dave, 18 and 24 tonight, ya?"
