ICG Yard 2 |
Description: |
Facing north on the Illinois Central Gulf at Gulfport Yard. The track curving off to the right behind the yard office led to the engine servicing area. At one time this was the south leg of a wye, and the locomotive shops for the Gulf & Ship Island Railroad was located within the wye. The G&SI's original passenger depot was located on the left, but the railroad moved into a joint depot with the Louisville & Nashville just south of the yard in 1903. The previous yard office, and almost all of the other railroad structures here, were damaged beyond repair by Hurricane Camille in August 1969. The orange baggage car visible to the right of the yard office is IC 818, and was moved here after Camille. |

ICG-L&N 2 |
Description: |
Facing south on the Illinois Central Gulf (former Gulf & Ship Island) towards the Port of Gulfport, just south of the ICG yard. The ICG crossed the Louisville & Nashville's line from New Orleans to Mobile at the northwest corner of the depot. The station was built as a joint venture between the two railroads in 1903. Passenger service on the IC between Gulfport and Jackson, Mississippi ended on 17 November 1950; but up until the end there had been a Gulfport-Chicago sleeper which was handled by the PANAMA LIMITED north of Jackson. The L&N bought out the IC's interest in the building in 1960, L&N passenger service ended with the advent of Amtrak in 1971, and the railroad closed the agency in 1982. |
