My Dad and my wife join me for a two day canoeing and railroading adventure in the Adirondacks. Note canoe inside the open air coach. What a great way to get your canoe to a remote lake! |

Dr Webb's "Cottage" : Nehasane Lodge on Lake Lila |
Description: |
Dr Webb, the builder and owner of the Mohawk and Malone built a millionaire's "cottage" on the south shore of Lake Lila in the Adirondacks. He was able to access the place via a private siding on his railroad, which passed just to the west of the lake. Nehasane Lodge was abandoned, but still standing when we visited in the summer of 1980. It was burned to the ground by the New York State D.E.C. as a "nonconforming structure" in a designated wilderness area. |

Passing the southbound train |
Description: |
On our northbound leg, we passed the southbound train at Saranac Lake Station, where there was a passing siding. The section of the railroad from Lake Clear Junciton over to Lake Placid was in poor shape; it had been a branchline over to Lake Placid, and was laid with lighter rail than the mainline, which continued north at Lake Clear Junction toward Malone, NY. Of course at that time, the old M&M north of Lake Clear Jct. had been lifted. |

Arrived in Lake Placid |
Description: |
Here's my wife Amy and my father on the open air coach shortly after the train's arrival on the third day of our adventure. We had flagged the northbound day train out of Thendara at Nehasane Station, loaded our canoe and camping stuff on the rear-end open air coach, and completed our round trip up to Lake Placid, then back to the car at Thendara. |
