Album Info:After opening up all the way to Lake Placid for the Olympics in February, 1980, the Adirondack Railway offered a daily round trip from Thendara up to L.P, serving all intermediate stations enroute. They also allowed us to bring our canoe and backpacks aboard the open air coach. On the northbound leg, we de-trained with the canoe at Lake Lila, (Nehasane Station on the old Mohawk & Malone). We camped two days and two nights on Lake Lila, then caught the northbound train on the third day to complete our round trip up to L.P. and back to Thendara. For someone who loves trains, canoeing, and the Adirondacks, it was a dream vacation - probably never again to be repeated. The Adirondack Railway had repeated troubles with beaver flooding along that lengthy right of way, and they went bankrupt shortly after our trip. Years later, the succeeding tourist operation scaled back to a more sustainable operation out of Thendara. From Thendara up to Lake Clear Junction it was heavyweight rail, hearkening back to the old NYC Mohawk and Malone Division. The final miles across to Lake Placid from Lake Clear Jct was lighter rail, and slower running.

Dr Webb's "Cottage" : Nehasane Lodge on Lake Lila
Title:  Dr Webb's "Cottage" : Nehasane Lodge on Lake Lila
Description:  Dr Webb, the builder and owner of the Mohawk and Malone built a millionaire's "cottage" on the south shore of Lake Lila in the Adirondacks. He was able to access the place via a private siding on his railroad, which passed just to the west of the lake. Nehasane Lodge was abandoned, but still standing when we visited in the summer of 1980. It was burned to the ground by the New York State D.E.C. as a "nonconforming structure" in a designated wilderness area.

Passing the southbound train
Title:  Passing the southbound train
Description:  On our northbound leg, we passed the southbound train at Saranac Lake Station, where there was a passing siding. The section of the railroad from Lake Clear Junciton over to Lake Placid was in poor shape; it had been a branchline over to Lake Placid, and was laid with lighter rail than the mainline, which continued north at Lake Clear Junction toward Malone, NY. Of course at that time, the old M&M north of Lake Clear Jct. had been lifted.
